I flew to South Korea around Christmas years ago. I flew in shorts and t shirt, with a hoodie in my carry on, cos it was got when I got on the airplane.Go to Ottawa for a week on Jan 4th to renew your US visa and lose your luggage due to storms. By the Friday I was walking around in a t-shirt and jacket open @ -12C. That was warm compared to Sunday through Wednesday.
Tiger colours, I hope!I had a 2 hr bus trip, and the only thing I could find remotely warm to buy at the airport was a pair of football socks!
Well at least your gentleman's region was looked after.the only thing I could find remotely warm to buy at the airport was a pair of football socks!
Would've looked fairly impressive with two socks down there n fully compensated for any cold weather shrinkage.Well at least your gentleman's region was looked after.
Agree Red.As predicted, already you’ve got a bunch of typical conservative, anti growth, anti development, anti everything Tasmanians trying to veto it. There’s always a reason for not doing something in Tasmania. Always. Think the rest of the country is getting tired of the division and small man’s outlook down there. I know I am.
Time for Tasmanians to grow some balls as a collective, put the selfish anti everything Greens and North-South dividers and “Arts” journalists like the one below in their place, and start dragging Tasmania out of the depressing, socio economic quagmire that it’s been in for the last 40 years.
Ffs it even looks like Glenorchy won’t be able to field a senior team in the TSL. That is unbelievable.
Seriously, how bad do things have to decline in Tasmania before there’s some concerted development and growth initiatives applied and SUPPORTED ?
Small minds equal a small life. Time to grow up Tasmania.
Murdoch, MONA and the AFL’s chokehold on Tasmania
The plans for a new stadium at Hobart’s Macquarie Point don’t make business sense. But that doesn’t stop the Tasmanian premier and Murdoch-owned The Mercury pushing for it.www.theage.com.au

Nah that’s not right at all McGraw. The existing grounds are nowhere near good enough. That’s been explained why 100 times over. They’re not fit for purpose - and I say that as someone who has played over 200 games of football between Bellerive and York Park too.Agree Red.
But the AFL have created/manipulated the issue so as to demand a flash new (massively expensive) stadium be built when, in my view, it's not needed to facilitate a Tasmanian team.
The existing grounds are good enough to host games for Hawthorn and North Melbourne, but not good enough for a Tassie team? Utter rubbish
Bellerive and York Park are completely inadequate for what’s needed to make a Tasmanian team long term viable. Completely.Where do I start Red.
Well, firstly how does an AFL fix the TFL / Glenorchy point you make - yes suburban footy is on its knees but the AFL don’t care about country footy, they never have - they have replaced this with all these academies. I used to know the head of AFL VIC and he used to get so angry at the AFL for the way they were treated.
Secondly, the AFL can’t be trusted and I don’t trust them. The state went into the team negotiations in good faith and what do the AFL do, change the goal posts at the last minute to include a stadium, not just any stadium mind you, but a top of the range, roofed bloody thing that they knew we couldn’t afford - but that how the AFL work, they make it up as they go to suit themselves. I agree totally with the article, and as a strong supporter of an AFL team, I have now lost interest in a Tassie team because of this and many people I talk to feel the same way.
The business case for a stadium just does not stack up. I mean WA and SA were in the AFL for decades before they decided they needed a wiz bang spanky new stadium and they both host 22 games a year - the Hobart stadium will be lucky to host 6 or 7 for Christ sake.
There are 3 basic questions from my perspective
1. Does Tassie need / or should have an AFL team - YES YES YES
2. Should Tassie build a new stadium - maybe at some stage but now isn’t really the right time.
3. If you answered yes to 2, then the next question is where should the stadium be built, there are three options really, in order of making sense - York Park (allows easier access for those around the State, good location within the city), Glenorchy (cheaper, easier for those in the North to attend and provides an excuse to start building light rail in hobart) or Mac point (where they have plonked it). Mac point makes the least sense out of all three options by a country mile.
Re the rest of your post, suggest you look up some of the economic stats, the state’s economy is booming at the moment, we just need to do some serious social reform in health, education and housing and we will be sweet. A bit like the rest of the county really but we come from a little way back.
I still firmly believe the AFL don’t want Tassie in the AFL, and they have set the bar so high that if it eventuates, they will get their boiled lollies as well - they are so out of touch it is not funny.
Anyway, I hope that was the reaction you were after
I will ignore your last comment, it’s a tad offensive - “ Small minds equal a small life. Time to grow up Tasmania.” - all I will say is that it takes a small mind to know one………..
Bellerive and York Park are completely inadequate for what’s needed to make a Tasmanian team long term viable. Completely.
Think bigger.
My team is Richmond.
I'm assuming a Tassie team will be profitable as a venture because the last thing I want is Richmond propping up another AFL franchise.
Premiership won't be any easier to win with a 19th team. I'm not interested in another charity team just because it feels like the right thing to do.
To balance that view though though i'd at least prefer a charity team in a traditional football state than a non football state. Get rid of the Giant$ or GC licence.
I don’t think anyone disagrees with you on this. Bellerive location is poor - what I am suggesting is a redeveloped York Park or a new green field stadium in Glenorchy - not Mac point.
Why does the stadium need a roof? - the cost becomes prohibitive and Docklands demonstrated the potential problems and additional costs required to maintain the turf.
What I object to is the AFL changing the goalposts mid negotiations and dictating to the Tasmanian people what they think we need. The AFL are experts in spending other people’s money for their own benefit and I don’t like the way they are going about this.
Is this big enough thinking for you………..
Nah that’s not right at all McGraw. The existing grounds are nowhere near good enough. That’s been explained why 100 times over. They’re not fit for purpose - and I say that as someone who has played over 200 games of football between Bellerive and York Park too.
This is a high risk enough venture for the AFL already without a half arsed stadium solution and not being able to support a commercial precinct.
The AFL has every right to demand the best for its product and reduce risk as much as possible.
Agree, as I’ve said earlier in the forum. Carrara was completely demolished and rebuilt for around $120mil-$130mil (about $180-$190mil in today’s money). Perfectly adequate and functional, while being a similar scale required for Tasmania.
Yet the bare minimum stadium required for a Tasmanian team is $750mil plus, for a gold and platinum plated, roofed version. An absurd level of grotesque, conspicuous consumption. The stuff of the last days of Rome.
