Bowden v Vlastuin

I'm a Big Vlastuin fan. I think Bowden's disposal and creativity is better. But I want Vlastuin's toughness and courage in my backline.

I also want Vlaustin shutting down his man more than Bowden did whilst still being that courageous marker of the ball and setting up attacks. More pieces to his game than Bowden.

You've convinced me, I'm with Bowden.

Bowden better ball user and more versatile, Vlastuin better overhead mark and in one on one contest but loses marks for ill discipline at times.

That's crazy talk. Stewart is an out and out gun, would walk into any side ever.
if !!!!!! the fact is Vlastuin is a 3 times premiership player, must considered ahead of Bowden. Forget about if he was coached better or if he was in a better team. I rate Bowden highly but not before Nick

Then on that logic you must rate JR8 ahead of Richo.
Oops. Think I’ve opened a can of worms

This back pocket is a fan of both……Nick edges Joel for me. His marking and hardness at the contest . If he could remove the brain farts he’d be further in front.

I've said before premierships are irrelevant to judging an individual's worth. Being a premiership player is as much about being in the right time and place than your own talent.

And Cameron Mooney. Who is as good as Riewoldt.

The 3x premiership player is irrelevant imo. Eg. Would you rate Jason Castagna ahead of Bowden?

I think where it adds weight is when you perform well those games. We don’t get that test with Bowden.

In terms of grand finals.

Vlaustin was shaky early in 2017 and recovered. (He was great in the other finals. Super clutch goal against Geelong from Outside 50)

19 is hard to judge given it was so one sided.

He was knocked out in 20.

The only thing we have to go on with Bowdo is the 2001 finals.
We were smashed by the bombers and he had 30 possessions.
He had 25 in our win against the Blues
He then had 27 in our big loss against Brisbane.
Vlastuin (as distinct from Vlaustin ;)) has been a terrific player for us over a long period of time. I am a massive fan.
However to me Bowden had a touch of mercurial class that Vlossy doesn’t have as well as a greater ability to play well at both ends of the ground.

A lot of those possessions were uncontested receives from sideways passes in our backline - something that was always a knock on Bowden and what a lot of people complain about with Short today (not me personally).

He was also very left side dominant which got him, and our ball movement into trouble regularly.

Wouldn't Bowden vs Houli be a better comparison based on playing style?

Instantly when presented with that thought I probably lean towards Vlastun,

But Bowden played in an era where we as tiger supporters didnt feel so positive about footy things and were more likely to look for faults and vica vesa for Vlastun , potentially a bit of that in there IMO .

Jeez you have a good memory. I just pulled out the stats of his finals to show he performed as he usually did in finals as that’s the only data we have.
I think Bowden was maligned for playing the way we wanted him to play at the time but he has a great record as a forward earlier in his career and later played at CHB. I can remember him playing on Jonathan Brown in one match.

This thread has been a great read and a very good comparison to pose. There is very little in it between the two.

I have rose coloured glasses for Bowden so i'd struggle to be objective here.

However as much as I love Vlas, Bowden had class, smarts & skills that you see in very few players ever. In a triple premiership side Bowden would have won a norm.

Lets not forget Joel also spent stints in the midfield and also forward over this career. I remember him winning a game or two of his boot. In terms of playing multiple positions he trumps Nick.

Joel was one of my all time fave players.
His left foot passes were a delight to see, and he could kick a goal or two.
Asa resident of Alice Springs I wonder how he is faring these days?
he is doing well in Darwin , he is a politician now
