Have you considered maybe they are doing this? Maybe they think his strengths are best suited to the backline? So rather than leave him forward in the hope that a 2goal/10 disposal-a-game VFL forward can somehow thrive at AFL cos we lack depth in that area, they are actually playing him to his strengths to give him the best chance to make the grade?

Absolutely. There are a glut of players that we (and other clubs) have picked up in 1 position but we have identified that they are better suited to alternative positions. We signed Bauer a year ago now, we'd probably have some idea of his strengths and we have determined we think we will be a reasonable to good VFL forward but unlikely to translate to AFL footy, do we persevere just because we recruited him as a forward or do we do as you say and try them in another position that their skillset may suit better.

We recruited Dan Rioli as a small forward
We recruited Liam Baker as a small forward
We recruited Jayden Short as a small forward
Hey go back further, we recruited Kane Lambert essentially as a small forward and many wanted him delisted at the end of 2016

We need to trust in our coaches as to what they see and what they deel will work at AFL level. They have a good track record of swinging players into positions that suit them.

Remember there was many an oracle on PRE that claimed that Nick Vlastuin was a midfielder. When he went in there he looked lost. We tried it out, it failed and still people on here claimed he was a midfielder, yet he's an AA in half back (well should be, and should be multiple AA half back).

So essentially you're saying it's defence or bust? Shows desperation considering when he was at the Swans academy he was used as a defender, failed to get drafted and went to the SANFL in the hope of being drafted. Played well enough as a KPF, gets drafted by us in the MSD draft last season in the hope of somewhat addressing the gaping hole we have had in the forward line and we've now done a 180 repeating the Swans' original plans which failed.

Im not saying that, but im suggesting maybe the coaches who work closely with him each and every week are actually assessing his strengths and playing him accordingly. or maybe they just moved him back cos that is what they do without any thought process behind the move.

It might also be helping him develop as a forward.

Crazy idea right?
Play on other forwards, see what tricks that get up to. See what works as a backman and start to think why the bad guy is doing that to you.
Learn to stay in the game.
Importantly Morro wants him to attack more and be more involved.
I'd guess that'd be a problem of his as a forward. So an AFL back would run off him.

think about how hard Jack works to make contests and defend. As a forward its not just about goals.

What we do today isnt permanent. Forwards can be backs as they develop.
We are on record as wanting well rounded players because that makes them better players in all phases of the game

One thing, when Jack is getting beaten, and there is no Lynch and he gets the best opposition player, he must sacrifice his game.
He should lead to one pocket and drag his man with him. the players to ignore him & have the option to kick to a fairer contest.
Yesterday, Jack was beaten hands down and we kept kicking it to him. Without Lynch, we can't afford to continue with this strategy.
He does sacrifice his game.
Its all about Jack.... giving 100% to the team.
If he went to the pocket what stops Aliir taking intercept marks?

We are relatively OK for defenders right now but have a real problem in the forwards without Lynch and having an aging and tired Jack being hammered on all sides with no umpire protection plus no other forwards to speak of so what do we do? We insist on converting a kid we got as a forward and try to turn him into defence or a Broad replacement. Well with Nathan resigning that idea is a bust so what have we to lose but to give the kid a go up forward

Cumberland is a cusp AFL player. Bauer is miles behind him. Therefore Bauer is miles behind cusp AFL #3 forward.

RFC knows all this. We measure. We benchmark. So we moved Bauer back to give him a chance to level up to AFL. All of this is logical and good.
What? We don't take to kindly to logical types around here Mister. But, but why did we draft him if we won't give him a game? Why did we play him the backline when we need a forward?

Ya gotta laugh.

He's sacrificing the *smile* out of his game. We could re-nickname him 'the Lamb'.

or the club thinks that Bauer will learn more playing VFL back not forward.
It might be his defensive skills, or his forward craft, or negating a defender, or staying 100% in the game, or taking risks to impact more contests.

The club gave him time forward, now its time back. It may not be permanent.

The club insists on developing our players to be good footballers and win premierships (and be good people too)
PRE insists it knows better
I think PRE is a bust

true.
Though I am taking umbrage at the way posters disparage what the club does and thinks their opinions are gold-spun fact.

Its not you UK, although I responded to you because of this opinion dressed as pigspittle.
"We insist on converting a kid .......blah blah ... that idea is a bust "
No one is happy with this season, and we can debate why without blaming the club that a young kid isnt the forward hero we need.

And no beef with you overall. I enjoy reading your posts overall.

I feel he’s still forecast to be a forward important though that he can make a contest if don’t mark it , that’s why being schooled in back line , he should have got a game by now we got it wrong winning only 3 games and one debutant is a joke

This is bulldhiit
Get McQuackQuack out of there. Before he ruins some of the kids.
Hardwick is gone, make a statement, make a move. Do something!
A door mat wouldve been better.
Fingers crossed when the new bloke takes over all of them exit punt Rd.
They are getting me angry.
For all the *smile* throwing at Geelong at least the *smile* plays the kids.
Maybe his kids are better but we never get to see ours.
We will rather watch the next 10 weeks 3 on Riewoldt every single week.

Interesting too, in that if I recall correctly, in 2017 the decision was made to play a pattern of play to suit the players strengths. Worked out ok.

Plus, looking at a couple of players at other Clubs. Darcy Moore was an ordinary forward when first played there. Liam Jones one great claim to fame was kicking goals against us, rest of the time at Carlton as a forward he was below average. Still playing good footy now in defence after an extended time out of the game and no spring chicken anymore. Even Ted Richards, ex Essendon, turned out pretty good at the Swannies as a full back but looked all at sea as a forward at the bummers.
