I think we've got to find out what they are TM. I'd agree with you that you don't through physically underdeveloped players to the wolves but these guys aren't 18 year old AFL babies.

Next year Ryan is 23, Bradkte 22, Bauer 21, Nyoun 21. The King boys are 23 now and have been spearheading almost solo for several years. Lynch himself was doing the same at Gold Coast.

It's definitely a sign of opposing philosophy because when I heard that I didn't know whether to laugh or spew up. I guess I'm influenced by the Australian Cricket team culture in it's dominant years. Perform or someone else takes your place and it like you never existed.

I thought the one good thing Clarkson and Hawthorn did with managing their list post three-peat was cutting Hodge, Lewis and Mitchell at the right time. If they had of gone to the draft then they might have set a new standard for how to reset after success.
I understand your point as I grew up ‘old school way ‘, but by my late teens did develop a ‘softer edge’ which I kept hidden as it ‘wasn’t the norm’.

Went ‘old school with my kids’ but found out that the times ‘are changing’ and we find ourselves at this spectrum.

That’s why in your point above with the Australian Cricket had to change with the times and Cummins was appointed the new skipper as he ‘fitted into the way we expect to be spoken and treated.

It rubbed and he has rubbed people the wrong way just like when the RFC in 17 went down a different path from the old ‘roo ha ‘.

Times are changing .

Probably why I think the Aussie team is making a massive mistake being led by Cummins!

Problem is though we've been looking at Samsung already this year and same as many, I'm thinking more ruck than key forward. Today's magoos game he tried hard but could barely hold a mark in slippery conditions. Definitely needs more games again this year and next.
Bauer we've simply only seen one game, when the whole team spudded things up so hopefully a couple more this year and a big pre season, but to me he's more mobile third tall than key.
Watched a few VFL broadcasts this year and both Biggie n Bradtke are nothing to write home about at magoos level, can't see any traits at the moment that would have them deserving of a senior run.
Funky's another who's had some senior footy, but he's also neither here nor there. Shows some quality moments then disappears into the ether, so needs to find a much harder and more focused edge to his game.
There's rarely been a time where any of them have grabbed a magoos game by the scruff of the neck n torn it apart that would make you think they can transition up to senior level. It's been more the case that they've played some ok footy and we need someone of that size to hopefully fill a hole at seniors n try to compete.

Agree completely, TM, huge concerns over all of them, which is why I think our list is in serious trouble.

But we have to sort it out one way or the other and the only way to do it is by playing them. Yeah we are going to take it up the tail pipe on the ground but until we get 30-40 games into those guys and decide to take them forward or cut them we are going nowhere.

This season shows how much we miss Tom but it also shows how we have all our eggs in one basket and seemingly have no real forwards except Tom and Jack I know we have a couple up and coming but they are still in their learning stages. We need a readymade good big man if we are going to progress but I have no idea who. Some have touted Himmelburg but I am not sure and there has to be someone we can get

Dunno about your first point. Tubby Taylor was carried through a two-year slump. Healy played two extra years (and arguably cost us a series victory in the Caribbean) when Gilchrist was ready to dominate the world. Blewett played 46 tests (2 100s in his last 44 tests) despite averaging 34, while Elliott, Hodge, Lehmann, Bevan, Law, Love dominated first-class cricket.

On your second, Hawthorn got peanuts for those club legends.

I think every team with a gun forward has this exact issue.

We will see how Geelong fares post Hawkins - who is their next Hawkins? His fitness / durability and performance levels are crazy and a key reason they compete every year. It's impossible to replace this.

Curnow replacement?

The more even spread across Brisbane, Melbourne, Collingwood makes these teams less susceptible to the star being out - but also I think less likely to dominate.

Surely Port can upgrade Dixon. Imagine Hawkins career at Port instead of Dixon - they would probably be the multi-premiership dynasty.

Hawthorn got nuttin for Hodge Lewis Mitchell. No more than if we delist Dow Mansell and Ralphsmith.
Sure it can unearth a Mitch Lewis at 76 or a Larkey. But it doesnt need to cost a Lynch to get a top 70 pick.

Its not just games that the young kids need, but competitive games with team structure, cohesion and system.
Otherwise theyre just chasing dust and wasting all our time

A disappointing season, losing Lynch for pretty much the whole season really hurt us. Dusty and Shai would be hard to replace, but with our lack of talls Tom proved to be irreplaceable.
I guess if Young wasn't a first year player we could have played Balta as a forward earlier in the season. Surely we address our lack of talls in the trade period or draft.

Got the fingers crossed that Tom makes a full recovery, and has no further problems with his foot.

A huge loss no doubt & he's been so great for us.
The main problem is we didn't just miss him this season, he's also now another year older & has missed a season of footy.
One thing to get him back but don't be at all surprised if he struggles a bit next year on his return.
