State Government

Good riddance. We'll be paying off his debt for decades to come.

Have little doubt a lot will come out over the course of time that will see his legacy viewed differently by even his most ardent supporters.

Corrupt, just like the scomo's and glady's of politics, just smarter at doing it. Perhaps the least transparent of the bunch.

Unfortunate we have such a paucity of trustworthy politicians.

Agree with sentiments he did what he said he would do.

Also agree with sentiments he had no care about how much those commitments cost and power / lack of accountability shone through.

Can argue about what he did and the situation we are in but you can't argue with the dedication and effort he put into the role.

For mine his standing up everyday during the lockdowns to take questions from reporters, even the News Corp vampires who would come from all over the country to do nothing but try to catch him out, stands out. He could easily have passed it onto someone, or made them weekly, but he was there everyday.

Not sure we've had a Premier who was attacked by the media as he was. Steps gate is a classic example of the media running a campaign against Andrews.

He certainly had his issues and the criticisms about a lack of accountability have credence. But he isn't alone on that score, politicians hate accountability.

But, he will leave us with less level crossings and a vital new addition to the train system, for these he will be thanked for decades.

I would have liked to see a lot of different things - better school funding, better hospital funding etc but he's been alright.

Also, will be remembered for putting peoples' lives first during the pandemic, how many lives were saved by the restrictions we will never know, but that will be remembered, and distorted by many, for a very long time.

I've never understood what was so remarkable about this. His chauffeur drove him to Spring Street, he speechwriter wrote what he said, and he answered a few questions. What an hour all up? My guess was that he did this out of guilt for all the *smile* ups he made. He also gave himself and his cronies 2 pay rises during COVID when people were struggling financially and mentally.

Teachers face up to hostile classrooms every day at a fraction of the $ Dan's on. How about police who attend DV disputes?

It's called doing your job.

Yeh, it's not like he had to fly anywhere, travel to meetings etc. We were in lockdown. It's fascinating how low the bar is with expectation of our public servants.

As you suggest, many face far greater pressure on a daily basis.

It was the biggest unknown of our time, to attend a morning press conference isn't exactly puuting on the army boots and going to the front line.

I reckon he quite enjoyed the questions, his ego is as big as any politicians I can recall.

Pity he has chosen to be not quite so open and transparent to answering questions in subsequent inquiries.

Not sure his speechwriter asked the questions. But to answer your point he was the only state premier to front up everyday and take a battering. Could easily have delegated and reduced the frequency but he was there day in day out.

I was it as him taking responsibility for what was happening in Victoria/Melbourne and facing the never-ending hostility that was coming his way from some of the state.

You may see it as guilt (really, ever seen Dan look or act guilty about anything?), but I saw it as strong leadership when the state needed it most.

I am no Andrews supporter but I am also not going to bag him for everything he did wrong and not praise him for the things I believe he did well
There is a lot of selective memory about COVID times. As someone who was very closely involved with the health system at that time I can tell you there were many who were thankful for what he was doing because it did stop our hospitals being overwhelmed and if they had been many many thousands of people would have died. We had no vaccine, no cure and were learning about how to treat it. There was no instruction book to COVID, human beings made decisions and I for one was glad I wasn't the one making them.
Our debt is as much about COVID as anything.
That being said he was overtaken by hubris imo and I am glad he is going. There are many politicians and public servants who were scared of making decisions for fear of crossing the Premier, I have heard that from the horses' mouths.
Maybe he had more self awareness that I gave him credit for.

Expectations were low with Morisson as PM. I had same feel that what he did here was great. Your are also right that communicating to your electorate clearly should be a base part of your job. Our standards and expectations are so low.

Nearly as good a day as grand final day 2017.
The Cain Kirner years years earn't Vic the tag of rust bucket state. Reckon once all Dan's crows come home to roost it'll be more like a nuclear waste land.

I’m disappointed he retired. He had more to do. He no doubt would have won a 4th landslide in 2026. But at the end of the day, only 1 state and federal leader is left standing after the pandemic started 3.5 years ago. No doubt it took its toll. And he had nothing more to prove.

His critics may be happy today, but at the end of the day, he left on his own terms. And no one can take that away from him. And if anyone thinks there is going to be a change in the way Victoria is governed, they’re in for a shock. It will be more of the same, but with a new face at the front. Its a proven winning formula.

He's been a good premier and I'm disappointed he's stepping down.

Easily the best political communicator in the country, took on big picture projects rather than focusing on short term reelection tactics, and more often than not does what he says he's going to do which is a rare quality in politics.

Best of luck to him for the future.

Andrews will be remembered for being the first leader to break the stranglehold of the Murdoch Media in Australia and won. 3 times. in 3 landslides. He has changed the landscape of Australian politics forever. And he paid for it too. The Murdoch Media went for him like no other (steps anyone?). and he still wiped them off the floor.

I think we underestimate how important this is. For 30 years Rupert was kingmaker. Hawke, Keating and Rudd all met with him. Andrews put a stop to this and he gave other Labor leaders the confidence to follow suit. And we are seeing the fruits of this now, with wall to wall Labor governments on the mainland.

I’m looking forward to being reincarnated as a pigeon

One thing I do find funny is people are convinced we have seen the last of Dan. Remember, he’s only 51. I would not be surprised in the slightest if Andrews did a Dimma and made a run for Canberra at the 2025 election after a well deserved break. Dan comes across to me as a career politician.

Andrews never faced a decent opposition locally, the Liberals have been Richmond in the 80's bad. .

The thing he did do well was harness social media to his advantage.

I've said it again and again, Dan Andrews created a Trump like following who blamed the media, never held him accountable for anything and ran their own version of fake news agenda, they even accused the ABC of being against them for god’s sake.

And no doubt Andrews slides into a corporate gig and will sit on boards. The drums have beaten for years that Lindsay Fox has something for him when he goes.

Without Dan Andrews Melbourne would still have all those hideous level crossings. I wonder whether the Libs will campaign that they will halt the their removal....I think not.

Well done Dan.

That's an odd view. Trump had the Murdoch machine lauding everything he did and promoting him far and wide. Andrews has enemy #1 to News Corp, so much so that the HUN now has a 40member Anti-Dan team that will probably be made redundant now. When Costello took over Nine Fairfax they joined the party.

Where was the Dan Andrews "fake news" being managed and broadcast?

Andrews had twitter whipped into a frenzy with "fake news, Murdoch lies!" for every issue from COVID to Com Games to not managing Crown.

PR Guy was the tip of the spear and Twitter is an echo chamber of Andrews barrackers. Genuine rusted on cult members.
