Pick 29: Shai Bolton

What if

Shai continues in this vein for the most part in 2024.

Wins a couple of games off his own brilliance.

But we finish 13th.

As a team, 2-3 years off challenging, perhaps more.

I don’t think prime time Bolton (age 26-30) will want to stay when he can earn $$ AND have more chance at medals elsewhere.

Said it all along, but he is cream. The most cream player in this game.

Wasted at RFC if he isn’t the best teacher, is slightly selfish, and his best work is forward of a ball we can’t win.

Yes, Bolton is a genius and one of the most dynamic players in the game. But a good list manager converts him into future gold rather than fritter him away on a poor list.

Food for thought IMO.

He signed until the end of 2028. That's a pretty good indicator of where he wants to be. He turns 30 that December. So Bolton has already committed his prime time to Richmond. The rest is just speculation and knee jerk.

Things can change quickly

As I reckon we will see in regards to Boston

I reckon you're wrong. If we can't help Shai reach his full potential and instead decide to get rid of the best post-Dusty player on our list after he has committed his long-term future to the club, we're not the Richmond we have shown ourselves to be over the last 15 years. And if that's the case, we have much, much bigger problems.

But as said, I think you are knee-jerking.

I dunno how trading out prime cuts who aren’t gonna be a part of the next flag is ‘unRichmond-like’. Seems like smart list management.

But clearly it isn’t a conversation for this season. Too early. But troubled waters ahead, we will see.

Just saw a few of the potential Tasmania provisions

RFC might wanna maximise its draft capital sooner rather than later

If you factor in compromised drafts, AND we stink it up on field, a Bolton trade just makes more sense.

Sorry Carts you have this all wrong. You want to build a premiership list with draft capital but in the same breath you want to trade out an A Grade talent to do so? Makes zero sense. What guarantees do you have that the players we draft are of Bolton quality?

You don’t have dynasty teams without the Boltons of the world!

Rewind to 2016 and use Dusty and your Bolton example. We probably would be merging with Tassie right now.

Everyone over the age of 25 is tradable next few years .
This Tas team will reak of future draft picks .We need to be real smart and plan these selection picks .
We can not be chasing picks while Tas is feasting .

I don’t have it wrong Aces. It’s all about timing. Age profile. If we don’t accumulate draft capital quickly Tasmania will just take our rightful share in coming years.

There’s some promising talent on our list but nowhere near enough, especially in midfield.

Bolton isn’t a player for an also-ran. He’s cream. So we sell for top dollar to a team needing cream.

It’s just business. Why keep him only to finish 3-4 rings higher on the ladder for a year or two?

With Bolton we stay stagnant, getting sloppy seconds from Tassie.

Trade Bolton for a new midfield and we rise up the ladder.

Precisely. This is the draft, here and now. Load up to rise quickly, immune from Tassie attached attached to the nursery like a king leech in coming years.

But didn’t we have the same issue when GWS and GC were coming into the comp? We didn’t throw out the baby with the bath water and trade out a Cotchin or Martin?

My philosophy is keep your elite talent and hit the draft hard this year and next. We certainly have the draft capital.

Where's Emma Murray? I reckon Shai needs some mindfulness. He doesn't look like he's enjoying himself out there. I reckon these years of poor conversion is starting to weigh him down.
Needs composure, calm & enjoyment of playing. Plus goal kicking routine to stick to - regardless of result.
