Although Luke McGuane is the lowest ranked of the 3 players to play every game this season (there are 2 who played 21 below him) he is the highest ranked backman in this year’s poll. I think this represents a general bias against defenders in these types of polls and also the standard of our developing backline. I think most would agree that McGuane was our best defender this year, showing aggression, tenacity and a willingness to attack off the backline. However, few would argue with the fact that Luke McGuane isn’t really a key position defender and if we have to rely on him in such a role we will struggle. Although he is a great competitor, he doesn’t have the size to go with the big forwards and he also has a tendency to give away frees in our defence, which can prove costly. I certainly see a place for Luke in our defence however we really need some big-bodied defenders to take some heat off this type of player.

Titch Edwards continued his steady improvement, playing 15 games this season, following the 16 he played in 2008. He certainly struggled to have any impact on the games he played in during the first half of the season and he was eventually dropped to Coburg. Upon his return and under Jade Rawlings, Shane played some great games, showing great awareness, evasion and disposal by hand. Shane still needs to work on building up his body to AFL size so that he isn’t so easily brushed off the ball, but he has such good awareness that he should be ready to continue his improvement under Hardwick in 2010 and become a regular contributor to the Tiger midfield.

It seems like a long time ago that Matty White was featuring prominently amongst the Tiger’s best, but he certainly was during the beginning of the 2009 season. For the first quarter of the season he was in the top 5 on PRE Player of the Year polls, racking up double digit votes in 3 of the first 5 games. However, it was downhill from that point as he only managed 2 more votes for the rest of the season. Clearly, this was due to a form slump and a tendency to turn the ball over which led to him being dropped from the senior side. At his best, Matty White has the ability to use his pace to break the lines and deliver into the forward 50, however he needs to continue to work on his skills and try to rub out the errors that can creep into his game. If any player has the drive and desire to achieve that goal, Whitey is the one. He will need to show some improvement and consistency if he is to feature prominently for the Tigers in 2010.

Another regular in the Tiger’s senior team of recent years that is unlikely to be in the side in 2010. Tuck’s fall from grace has come rapidly since the demise of Wallace. A consistent performer since he began to get regular games after the appointment of Wallace, he has also featured prominently in the Jack Dyer Medal counts. Tuck has been one of our more prolific ball winners in the contest, but his appearance on the trade table has more to do with what he does when he gets the ball out of the clinches. It is clear that the list management team consider his disposal a liability as he often either blindly bombs it forward, or uses the Tucky overhead handball that is often pinged as a throw by the umpires. I personally wanted to see how he would go as a forward target, as he plays tall, is a good mark and is very reliable with his set shot for goal. Whether he is with the Tigers in 2010 or another side, you can guarantee that Tuck will be tough at the contest and always give his all.

Jack continued his development as a key position forward in the AFL and continued to show why he is such an important player for the future Tigers forward line. While many key position players around his age continue to struggle to play in their respective senior sides, a mixture of necessity and his ability to play the game have led Jack to play most of his footy this season at the senior level. Although he can be inconsistent and come in and out of matches, he has already shown that he has the courage and footy smarts to win a game off his own boot. This was best demonstrated against the Dons when he kicked a career best 6.1 in one of the Tigers rare victories this season. As he matures as a player I would expect him to feature more and more prominently in matches and play a central role in the Tiger’s forward line in seasons to come. When you combine his natural footy ability with his clear leadership qualities and vocal presence on the field, he is a value contributor to a side with players that are, for the most part, down on confidence.

From a rookie-listed player that hadn’t played a game of AFL to a top 10 finish in the PRE Player of the Year, Robin Nahas is one of the few great success stories for the Tigers in 2009. Nahas was great to watch both for his attack on the footy, as well as his work ethic that allowed him to apply at least as much forward pressure as any of his teammates. He graphically demonstrated the principle that tackling is as much mental as physical as he regularly applied effective tackles to players far larger than himself. He also didn’t appear to lack confidence and one of his runs through the midfield corridor, evading the opposition as he went, was one of the highlights of the season for me. It is clear that Nahas will feature on the Tigers’ list in 2010 and fill that small forward role that we have been lacking for some time.

The winner of the 2008 PRE Player of the Year was well on track to make it back to back awards when he was struck down with a serious hamstring tendon injury after playing only 6 games for the season. In those 6 games Richo was voted in the top 3 Tigers in 4 of them and when he went down with injury he was leading the polls by over 100 votes! It wasn’t until round 11 that he gave up the lead and a 7th placed finish is still astonishing for a player who missed so much footy this year. As someone who attends every home match I can personally say that it is a vastly different side without Richo in it. For all of his faults, you know he will give his all and take contested marks better than anyone in the league. With his injury concerns this year, it is easy to forget what a dominant force he has been over the past 2 seasons, with his close Brownlow result in 2008 and his dominance in the early part of this season. I for one hope that we can farewell the legend in style and that his body is right for one more season.

Only the second non-Richo leading goal kicker at Richmond since 1996, Mitch Morton emerged as the Tiger’s most dangerous forward in 2009 kicking 41 goals. Although Mitch has been accused of sometimes playing non-team oriented footy this is probably because with his innate goal sense and ability to kick goals from the most difficult angles, when he does miss (which is not often) it is made to look worse. In an ideal forward set-up I see Mitch playing out of the forward pocket or flank, playing the sort of role the Stevie Johnson plays at the Cats. Like Johnson, he can kick goals from all parts of the forward 50, he just needs to work on his normal set shots, where he appears to find the accuracy more difficult and tends to play on at all costs. Mitch benefited greatly from the structure of the PRE Player of the Year voting system, having a good game (relatively) in round 1 when we had the biggest voter turnout. As such, he received 261 out of his total of 388 votes in round 1! This is reflected in the normalised voting results, which demonstrates the effect of voter turnout on position.

‘Axel’ Foley had another solid season and was consistently in the votes including a best Tiger on ground performance against the Bulldogs in round 3. Nathan’s ability to win the inside ball and break from the pack makes him such an instrumental part of our midfield and when he succumbed to injury and missed the end of the season, the effect on our clearances and effectiveness at the stoppages was readily apparent. With his early finish to the season for surgery Foley should be fit and ready for a full preseason and a big 2010.

Richmond’s big decision to recruit Ben Cousins in the Preseason Draft appeared as if it was going to blow up in their face when the Tigers were humiliated in round 1 against Carlton and Cousins limped off with the recurrence of a hamstring injury. However, once Ben regained fitness and got back up to speed with a few games at AFL level under his belt, it was clear that he had lost none of the skill that won him a Brownlow medal earlier in his career. Cousins was clearly Richmond’s best midfielder in the latter stages of the season and his ability to win the ball and dispose of it with precision was glorious to behold. He also demonstrated his legendary ability to run himself into the ground and that insatiable thirst for success. On top of his ability to draw members to the club through the hype and his clear skill on the ground, Cousins was also a clear leader, especially to the large cohort of younger players at the club. This role could prove to be his most valuable contribution as these young players see the work rate that is required to reach the elite level in the AFL. It will be good to see Cousins continue in this capacity in 2010 and attempt to improve on his 4th place finish in the PRE Player of the Year.

A lot of the preseason hype was focussed on Daniel Jackson and after his 2009 season it was clear to see why. Jackson went from a fringe player in 2008, managing 11 games in the seniors to one of only 3 players to feature in all 22 matches for the 2009 season. Jackson emerged as one of the best negating players in the league and started to also extend this to play as an attacking midfielder in patches. At the halfway point of the season Jacko was the clear favourite for the Jack Dyer Medal and led the PRE Player of the Year polls for 4 rounds during that period. However, after the departure of Wallace after round 11 Jackson had a much quieter second half of the season as some of his more recognised teammates started to impose themselves. One of the more memorable moments of the 2009 season was the head wound that led to the picture above. From the stands of the MCG his blood stained face was just as apparent. Even with his quieter second half of 2009 I would expect Jackson to feature prominently in tonight’s Jack Dyer Medal count and I look forward to seeing continued improvement from him in 2010.

Another one of Richmond’s players that sparks plenty of healthy discussion and debate; even the darkest of darksiders were forced to concede that Richie has had a vastly improved season in 2009 and has started to show that he may become the player we hoped he would when he was drafted with pick 4 in 2004. In previous seasons Tambling would drift in and out of matches and rarely accumulated 20 possessions. That all changed in 2009 after a relatively slow start to the season something ‘clicked’ and Tambling started to find a lot of the footy, including the contested footy and started using it with elite disposal. Tambling played everywhere from half back to half forward and consistently kept the ball moving, breaking tackles and finding teammates with his disposal more often than not. We have seen Tambling improve every season he has played with the Tigers. It seems as though he may be on the cusp of a big season as it appears that he has worked out the level of work it takes to make it at AFL level. Richie has always struck me as an intelligent, level-headed guy with a lot of responsibilities outside of his footy commitments. I look forward to seeing him join the league’s elite in the coming seasons and his second place finish in the PRE Player of the Year is a great step in that direction.

It is amazing that a player can be threatened with demotion half way through a season and turn his game on to such an extent that he runs away as clearly the best Richmond player of 2009. Brett Deledio’s only real enemy is himself, as when he is focussed and winning the ball you can almost guarantee that his use will be damaging to the opposition. Brett Deledio’s 25 possessions are worth 30+ to most players, such is the precision of his disposal. After claiming the runner up award in the 2008 PRE Player of the Year awards and winning the 2008 Jack Dyer Medal, Brett has gone one step further and claimed the PRE Player of the Year Award for 2009. We will have to wait for the results this evening to see if he can go back to back in the Jack Dyer Medals. Brett’s recent re-signing with the club was a crucial event, as he is a key member in the future success of the Tigers. He has shown that he can play in a variety of roles, from half back, to rotating through the guts to pinch hitting at full forward. Future success at Tigerland will certainly feature Lids prominently and I congratulate him on a great 2009 and hope for more success for him and the team (and us supporters!) in 2010.
