Changes V GC

Always been a fringe player. He plays when we're undermanned. When you're undermanned you lose more games.
That's not true though.

Last year he played when our whole list was healthy. He was selected in 21 of our 22 games. Round one he played this year when our whole midfield and forward line (which he plays) was fit bar Graham and Kmac. All players play in teams that have one or two injuries, that's not specific to Aarts.

And even if he's replacing an injured player in a team with one or two injuries, If we're worse when he replaces an injured player, maybe we should be trying someone else to replace an injured player?

As I said, win/loss isn't everything, there are lots of other reasons why Aarts is not a good selection. But even if he's our break glass in case of emergency (which he hasn't been), what's the point of breaking the glass in a fire, and finding a bunch of accelerant instead of an extinguisher?

Gibcus is out, so a tall defender must be included.
Not really fussed either way by the inclusion of Aarts.
It is not a game changer.
Richmond is a system-based team, as Dimma says, plug and play.
The player type conforms to the system, not vice-versa.

That's not always the case, and there is room for adjustment.

When Prestia went out last week, Soldo replaced him.

It will be interesting to see if the Aarts inside mid experiment is tried again this week. If so, it's a desperate move to fix the clearance deficiency, but I guess they're hoping for a 1 week success story, because it's destined for failure longer term. It really does make a statement about RCD and Dow though.

When you look at our team selection, it makes the trade play for Taranto obvious.

If we can pull this off, it would go damn close to fixing our midfield.

I'll be honest, I am worried about this week. I don’t like the ins and outs (although Rankine out for them probably cancels out losing Vlastuin). And they will be smarting from 2 close losses in consecutive weeks. The only saving grace is our record at Metricon. But the 4:35pm first bounce is that awkward time where there will be a lot of dew on the surface.

Does anyone have a link to story or is it paywalled?
If we are going after both - this makes me think Martin is moving on and Cotchin is calling time at the end of the year.

Maybe. IMO its simply a case of the MC thinks JA is the best option this week. I agree that he isn't much chop, but the MC thinks that all things considered, the alternatives are less chop. We have a lot of VFL players in this week, not good for a speculative debut. I'm not confident for that reason. But take out Aarts and replace him with any of the emergencies, I'd be a bit less confident.

Patently false statement as shown by Coburg, but hey throw around an anti vax insult and you're cool for cats!

He'll be in the box, ha ha ha! There won't be dew at 4.30, 6.00 onwards maybe, but won't be a huge issue, maybe last Q.

This is an awkward game… they have it all on the line and we just need to keep getting the wins. Rankine a massive loss. Just get it done however possible.

How is it patently false? I’d imagine if we looked at our team in 2H21 it was missing Pickett, Martin, Cotchin occasionally etc. we were playing Parker, ccj, chol and a very young mrj too.

I’m sure there is some metric that measures overall team strength and I don’t have the data but I’d imagine that aarts generally has been in the side when that number is low and out of the side when it’s high. It just happened that he played a lot of game because we had a lot of injuries last year.

Yeah.

We are struggling for bodies in the midfield, definitely. I understand his inclusion. I don't agree with it. I think we have selected a safe side to mitigate disruption. But I'm almost certain it's a losing side.

As I said somewhere else, selecting Cumberland to take Bolton's spot, and having Bolton play more midfield would have been a more aggressive option. Which would have given us a better chance at a win.

Since his inclusion into the side in 2020, he has barely been dropped until this year. He played every game after his debut in round 5 (was fortunately dropped after our only losing final since 2015 - and the only one he played in).

He then played every game bar one in 2021.

He then played the first three rounds this year until the MC finally realised he wasn't helping things.

He has been considered best 22 by our match committee for years, and we finally moved on. We realised he is not a feature of our best footy.

It is true to say that his inclusion into the side has not coincided with our best football. It is not true to say he has only been a fringe player who plays when we're depleted.

It is obviously only a correlation, and I'm not suggesting he makes us lose.

Only that he doesn't help us win.

He got dropped, he earned his spot back into the side through sheer good vfl performances and I believe attitude towards that as well. This is to be commended and understandably rewarded when a spot pops up. He is usually always good for a goal or two as well and I hope that he makes the most of this opportunity. He isn’t my favourite but I respect blokes that get dropped and earn their spot back through good attitude and hard work. I’d rather that than gifting blokes games who don’t deserve it yet

Am I the only one concerned that we haven't been hit hard by Covid protocols yet? Fingers crossed that we don't get hit in the finals series (if we make it).
