i don't buy this 'giving a guy a game to work his way into form'.
you'd be playing guys who are showing form. wouldn't you? For me that's Markov over Stack.
that said, i hope Sidney has a good one.

Under normal circumstances I'd agree. This ain't normal circumstances which makes it impossible for players to find form in the 2nds because there's no comp. Bigger picture is at play year, not game by game form.

fair enough TL. So you go on what they show on the day right? Despite what you think a player 'might' do?

Lions have gone really tall. Have they gone that way, as they are backing in a kicking game like West Coast do. Personally I don't think the Lions group have anywhere near as good a bunch of kicks as at West Coast. Very inexperienced too. The number of games stated below includes tomorrow night.

Reckon they are backing their 3 tall backs to mark the ball in front of Tom and Jack similar to what the Giants did. A lot of confidence in a first gamer.

Defensive half
Andrews 201cm - 107 games
Gardiner 193cm - 116 games
Payne 197cm - 1 game

Forward half / ruck
Hipwood 204cm - 85 games
McInerney 205cm - 47 games
Skinner 198cm - 3 games
Ballendon 200cm - 2 games

I hope for there sake there's no dew tommorow night 10 degrees over night.

Hardwick has spoken recently of matches "looking like a Richmond game". On paper at least, this looks like a Richmond game.

I'm just putting forward why I think the Tigers didn't drop Stack. His upside is better than what Markov has ever achieved so the bigger picture is likely around getting Stack into form to be in a better position 2 or 3 rounds from now. I thought Markov was ok but there's goi g to be tough decisions made as our better players come back. To me Stack has more chance of holding a spot down the track than Markov IF he can find better form.

Does this stat ever effect the result??There's one box missing?

Obviously each game needs to be looked at on its individual merits, but older teams have the following record:

Age diff (yrs)PlayedWonLostDrawnWin %
< 0.54919249723774551.22
0.5 - 14198232018344455.79
1 - 1.52925171311803259.11
1.5 - 2184611716561963.95
2 - 2.510026663241267.07
2.5 - 3485338143470.1
> 331925264379.47

On average, the older a team compared to the opposition, the greater its chance of winning. Hardwick's teams have been faithful to the rule, with a 63-15-1 record when older than the opposition. When +0.98 or greater we're 26-3, which is why the St.Kilda game (+2.16) was a nasty shock.

Markov was ok, didn't excel. Stack was average but we all know he has great upside and clearly that's the reason he kept his spot as he builds his confidence and form. Personally would have loved to see Markov given a go on the wing in place of Kmac. Reckon he could excel there given a chance. Saying that we're talking about our depth players, at full strength they don't get a game. At 24yo Markov has been given plenty of chances to prove himself at VFL level conceding he hasn't had a lot of opportunities at AFL level due to our strong team. Is pushing an uphill battle from here with the youngsters coming through.

I think they are planning on giving Syd extra chances to snap outta the fog he is playing in.

He is an exceptional player and there is no real other way of getting him match fit hence hes being played, as you say his upside is enough to be the difference.

Didn't chase, but somehow managed to lay the most tackles of any player. Imagine how many tackles he'd get if he chases!

Plenty were when he fumbled the ball and tackled the oppo player who picked it up. But he tried, no doubt.

I guess the philosophy is that his upside is so great it's worth carrying him til he gets fit - it's fair enough, his upside is immense.

Sydney will be given plenty of midfield time. He is effectively playing the Jack Graham role. Chase, harass, tackle.
