Mothers Day Victory!
Monday 12 May 2003

The Coburg Tigers finally notched up their first victory of season 2003
with a win over a fast finishing Bendigo Bombers.

Both teams were starved of AFL players from their respective aligned teams
due to injury. Bendigo had 9 Essendon players and Coburg had 8 Richmond
players. This presented plenty of opportunity for Coburg listed players to
play a full game of senior football.

The first quarter was very free flowing with the ball going from one end to
the other with relative ease. Both teams were struggling to man up with
plenty of possession for both sides. Clinton King was one of these players
racking up 11 touches and Dean Talbot was providing a target up forward
with 4 marks and 8 kicks.

The Coburg boys showed their hunger in the second term kicking 4 goals to
the Bomber's 1 to go into half time with a 23 point lead. Coburg had plenty
of the ball and should have been even further in front. Clinton King had 21
touches, Captain Dean Talbot had 20, Duncan Kellaway had 15, Leigh Carlson
14 as did Chris Hyde.

The third quarter was going to be important for the Coburg team. They
needed to put scoreboard pressure on Bendigo. Coburg was getting more of
the ball but were wasteful in the first half.

To coach Spargo's relief, his team came out committed and spirited after
the break and extended their lead. They played more direct football cutting
down their handballs and kicking long to a mobile forward line of Taylor,
Hart, Whyman and McGrath. Each was exciting and providing plenty of
forwardline pressure. Coburg held a 38 point lead going into the last
quarter and could smell their first victory.

In the last term the Coburg boys stopped to a halt as a fired up Bendigo
team kicked a couple of quick goals. The run and long kicking turned to
stagnant play with short kicks. The crowd began to get a bit concerned as
Bendigo kicked another 2 goals to only trail by 14 points. Thankfully
senior players Hyde, Kellaway and Talbot stepped up to slow the game down
and regain composure. When the final siren went a sigh of relief was heard
around the terraces as Coburg had it's first victory of the season.

Tigers finally sink teeth into season

By Lance Jenkinson

COBURG Tigers belatedly broke through for their
first win of the Victorian Football League season
with a confidence-boosting 14-point triumph over
the Bendigo Bombers at Coburg City Oval last Sunday.

Paul Spargo can breath a massive sigh of relief as
he notched his first win in six games as the coach of
the Tigers.

Football manager Michael Roberts said a big weight
had been lifted from the shoulders of the rookie
VFL coach.

"It is a huge relief for the coach, everything has
been going well for him at Richmond and he hasn't
expericenced a win in VFL footy, so it was good to
get one under the belt and hopefully they can start
stringing a few together."

The Tigers led at every change to keep hold of the
Moreland Moonee Valley Cup played annually bwteen
the Tigers and Bombers VFL teams.

Making the win all the more impressive was that
Coburg boasted three debutants.

Former Murray Bushrangers captain Corey Brown slotted
into the midfield, Ben Wilkinson held down a spot
on the half forward flank, and ex-Springvale
player Steve Jarrot looks to be a good prospect.

The 20 year old back pocket hard-nut is shaped in
the mould of one of Coburg's favourite sons,
Kristian De Pasquale.

He is a pint-sized defender who attacks the ball with
plenty of heart.

The star of the show was exciting Aboriginal forward
Djaren Whyman, who joined the club at the start of
the season having spent time on the Hawthorn rookie
list.

The small goalsneak, 19, followed up from his four
goals the previous week to slot home a further three
in a damaging display in attack.

"He knows how to play, he's very talented, he's probably
one of the players on the list that has still got a
chance to get back on to an AFL list," Roberts said.

Coburg faces Sandringham in what is shaping as a must
win if it is to start challenging for a berth in the
top eight.
