Just read elsewhere that there's a special
meeting (with a view to correcting the board's
problems) on Wednesday 30th April at 7.30pm.

It would be a good idea for all members who can
show up to do so! - perhaps to stop another episode
of some people trying to railroad a club from
happening again. There are some very unhappy
chappy's down there :(

(You all remember - that cheapo $25 you pay doesn't
just also get you into the grounds - it makes you
a member!)

Things that came out of the meeting:

In no particular order....

* There is currently no exec committee. The club needs
one or else. There are legal implications to not having
an exec.

* Current Debt is as stated at the AGM (approx $150K)
and is quite "servicable" and the club is "solvent", but
needs to look at sources of revenue and costs.

* Day to day running is "OK". Match day running is fine
except for the presidents lunch.

* There is no magical "missing" $100K or $180K" The previous
President and Vice-President didn't nick off with it.

* Contrary to rumour, Richmond are very willing to help. To the
extent that Greg Miller voluntered to be on the exec committee.
It appears that there are flawed lines of communication between
Coburg and Richmond, with Richmond saying they'll help - but you
have to ask... and no one actually asking.

* Greg Miller stated that Richmond are committed to making the
alliance work, there are *many* advantages to the alliance from
the Richmond point of view. Particularly from the "football"
department. However, if Coburg "stuff it up" (my words) then
obviously, Richmond would have to look at it very closely.
Richmond aren't going to do everything.

* Richmond could have simply walked in and taken over Coburg,
but they instead choose to work with Coburg so that they could
maintain some identity/history. It is/was all a very new and
learning experience and mistakes have been made.

* There were documentation issues (eg, there isn't a signed
alliance agreement with the RFC). However, these things are
not exactly "important" in the scheme of things and were
(or will be) very easy to work out.

* There was an assurance that the current turmoil wasn't
affecting the players, and that Paul Spargo will take time
to build the team/experience into what is required for
consistent good performance (a month was mentioned).
(I'm not sure on this - the players being affected that is).

* The VFL is very supportive of Coburg. They even mentioned
the possibility of wiping out some the dept of Coburg to them.

* The reason for the Vice President resigining were enumerated.
(Due to me posting on another message board!) Sounds probably
fair - more to do with the way Richmond treated him.

* No proper reason for the Pres resigning.
(Some can't understand the resignation when all the preceived
problems were well known, and nothing had actually changed, and
the timing of it was just appalling.)

* Some details, (like the reasons for the whole comittee being
asked to resign) where glossed over. I suppose that's fair
enough, as was repeated several times, what's happened has
happened, and there's no point dwelling on it.

Hopefully Damo can fill in some more blanks..

I heard that Phill Cleary (sp?) will be meeting with Richmond and Coburg officials tonight (12 may) with the view of assessing his suitabilty for the position of Chaiman of the Coburg footy club . I Dont know if he would be the right person for the job or who approached who but phil seems to have put his hand up for the position.

Cleary set to take charge.

By Lance Jenkinson

INFLUENTIAL Victorian Football league commentator and
disginguished Coburg great Phil Cleary appears certain
to make a return to City Oval in an official capacity
as a club figurehead.

The former local politician met with Richmond Football
Club officials at Punt Road Oval last night to discuss
the possibility of the ex-Coburg captain and coach
rejoining the club as either chairman or president.

"Yes, I have been speaking to Richmond and Coburg people
about the situation at Coburg. It's true that I'm
seriously considering taking on a role at Coburg."
Cleary said.

"They know that if I was to take on a figurehead role
I can't be a yes man.

"I'll work corroboratively with them, but I'm not
going to be a yes man for the AFL - but I
respect the partnership."

The position became vacant after president Peter Bacash
and vice-president Tony Singarella resigned, having been
critical of Coburg's dealings with the AFL club.

Cleary has had discusions with Richmond officials Greg
Miller and Greg Hutchinson with positive feedback,
but does not retract from past comments that he was
disappointed with the AFL club's communication with
Coburg.

"I've been impressed with the goodwill show by
Richmond in my discussions.

"I'm on the record as being critical of Richmond's
dealings with Peter Bacash and Tony Singarella and I
stand by that - I don't think they dealt with the
public relations particularly well.

"I thought they should have had better conversation
with Peter Bacash and Tony Singarella and I stick
to that."

Should Cleary be appointed in the role of the club
he holds close to his heart, changes to the Coburg
Tigers partnership will be made.

"I think it is rooted in the problem that we haven't
worked out what the relationship between the AFL and
a VFL club should be like," he said.

"The consequences have been we've got VFL clubs losing
their identity and what happens when they lose their
identity, the local people don't identify with them.

"The Richmond Tigers aren't effected by that, but
they're shooting themselves in the foot because if they
want to build a strong partnership and build their
own club they need to ensure the VFL club or partner
holds on to its history and grows in the area."

Cleary described the VFL and AFL partnerships as
"rubbery" and is calling on all VFL clubs to get
together and discuss the future of the premier
grass-roots competition.

"We need to sit down and discuss a blueprint.

"We need to tell the AFL clubs that they're
making mistakes when they ride rough-shod over the
local club's history.

"How can you identify with a club wearing red and blue
singing we're yellow and black and we're from Tigerland?

"It is not sentimentality that, it is plain stupid, they
might as well take over the club."

"They know that if I was to take on a figurehead role I can't be a yes man.

That made me laugh. I couldn't in my wildest dreams imagine Phil being a "yes man."

I hope Coburg and all VFL clubs keep their identity and local support.
It's what's got them there, and it's their future if the AFL allegiance falls through.
Does anyone know what the Coburg theme song is?

As always, thanks for your reports bak :)

It's something along the lines of ... (the old
Coburg web site used to have it as well as an mp3
file - but alas, it is no more).

We are Coburg boys you know
All the coaches tell us so
We'll thrill 'em
We'll kill 'em
We'll tear 'em in two
We're triers
We're fliers
We're the boys of red and blue
And when we reach that final four
Then we'll kick those goals galore
Then you'll hear those Tigers roar
Oh yes Coburg we'll be there.

(all the coaches gets changed to the current coach).
