Coronavirus

Both new cases linked to the aged care breakout. One a 79 year old who'd had 2 jabs already & was asymptomatic. The other a nurse.

I see that as a good thing..
Having had the 2 Pfizer jabs may well have prevented the 79 year from being symptomatic and hopefully slightly less likely to pass it on?

yeah hopefully Caesar. Being asymptomatic doesn't necessarily mean non-contagious, but it helps.

Yes. The vaccinations are not going to stop everyone from getting COVID but will reduce the spread and make it less dangerous when you get it.
COVID is not going to disappear but more and more vaccinations and treatments will make it more manageable.
The more we vaccinate the more it is like a norma viral influenza which we live with every year in an open society.
It is actually a race, not against other countries but against COVID

Double-edged sword. Being asymptomatic means you're less likely to get tested, less likely to think twice about having contact with vulnerable people.

I'm not arguing against people getting vaccinated but it remains to be seen how it plays out.

There have always been asymptomatic cases. That's why if you have been exposed or contact traced, you get tested.

Look at the US and UK if you want to see how it's playing out.

Now the fire has been lit under their arses, the FedGov is finally treating vaccination as a high priority. Greg Hunt announced:

Commonwealth to give 100k more Pfizer vaccines to Victoria

By Abbir Dib

UPDATED: Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says the Federal Government will be releasing additional vaccines for Victorians.
“We will provide an extra 100,000 Pfizer vaccines to the Victorian Government over a three-week period, commencing from June 14,” he said.
“This will allow them to work through some of their existing inventory and will provide that extra 100,000 doses which will support 50,000 individuals receive vaccines over the coming weeks.
“The Australian government will double doses for GPs in Victoria for each of the next two weeks from 115,000 to 230,000 AstraZeneca. This will help drive forward the vaccinations for the over 50s.”
Mr Hunt said Saturday was a record day for vaccinations across Australia with over 88,000 Australians being vaccinated.
“772,752 Australians have been vaccinated in six days. This means that over 5 million vaccines have now been delivered in Australia,” he said.

No doubt we're observing closely what's happening elsewhere - 2600 deaths/60 deaths in the last week.

Yes, daily death rate falling extremely rapidly in the UK since mass vaccination, thanks for pointing that out. Some of that due to better treatment of course.

Trend looking good for the US as well. We should see good results after Biden's vaccination blitz this month, with some lag of course.

Vaccination have significant impact, reducing death rates in aged and vulnerable populations in the States as well. April figures showed daily death rate down 80% on January.

From April 30th, so the death rates have reduced even further since this article.

CNN's analysis of Johns Hopkins University data finds that the average of new Covid-19 deaths in the last seven days fell from 3,295 each day on January 28 to 1,985 on February 28, then to 997 on March 28. By April 28, the average was 684.
The highest seven-day averages of new Covid-19 deaths were recorded on January 13 and 14, at around 3,431 deaths a day.
The plunge from 3,431 deaths a day on average in January to 684 in April represents a drop of 80%. The last time the seven-day average of newly reported deaths fell below 700 was briefly in early October.

And

Covid-19 vaccinations are already having a significant impact on death rates among certain groups in the United States, such as older adults, Dr. Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told CNN.
"If you look, for example at populations that have been highly vaccinated like nursing home residents, you will see that deaths in nursing homes have plummeted, and overall, the death rate has been falling over time. It's really a function of how many of the high-risk individuals have been vaccinated and that is becoming more evident," Adalja said.

Also - and remember this is a month old...

On Friday, the United States officially crossed the 100 million mark of people fully vaccinated. About 43.6% of the population -- nearly 145 million people -- have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 30.5% of the population -- more than 101 million people -- are fully vaccinated, CDC data shows.

Yep. But I'm suggesting it could possibly have the opposite effect here for a while, coming off a different base.

The Libs seen to talk a lot about something that is a low priority.

Given it looks like vaccination protects against death from COVID, how the hell would higher rates of vaccination lead to increasing numbers of deaths?

Makes no sense.
