Then you probably shouldn't be posting nonsense like 'he found his level' when he showed for two decades that he was above the level.tigerman said:I'm aware of that.

After years of being ignored, he was brought back in halfway through the 1995/96 season, when he would have been 30, so in his prime yes. He played 10 games as an opener when he was a middle order batsman. He top-scored six times and second top-scored twice (2 100s, 5 50s) in a team that included Jones, Elliott and Hodge. He had a couple of lean games and was dropped, never to be picked again despite dominating District cricket into his 40s.tigerman said:My recollection is that he was a good player, who got a second go at shield cricket when he was in his prime and didn't quite take his chance. And like a hell of a lot of players he perhaps could have been given a bit more of a go.

Jones, Siddons, Hodge, Elliott and Maxwell are the only superior Victorian batsmen of the past 30 years. (Including Klinger but not counting Hussey, Lehmann or Nobes.)
He averaged 24.26. Hodge averaged 20, Harvey 24, Jones 40, that season. He was batted out of position and top-scored three times and was second-top once.tigerman said:His last season was 96/97, he had scores of 55, 5, 1, 24*,4, 56, 1, 56, 24, 5, 14, 12, he averaged 21.41

He was the best batsman in District cricket year after year while the likes of Vimpani got three years of averaging 20 in the state team. He made as many centuries in 83 first-class innings as Aaron Finch has in 83 first-class games. He scored 41 first grade centuries, more than anyone in Victorian history. Ask Leysy how good someone has to be to make that many tons. 48 centuries and 84 50s at district and state level. Was picked too young, discarded too early, ignored for most of his prime and still has a better first-class record than a few in the current Australian team.
If he were a Pom or a Kiwi he would have played 100+ first-class games and plenty of Tests.
