TBR has raised the question and it's a good one.

I voted no, but why does he have to be the "number 1"? In 2017-2020 we had Cotch the sledgehammer, Dusty the classy all-rounder who scored bags as well, Prestia had that amazing acceleration from stoppages, plus Lambert of course.

Every great midfield is a machine composed of multiple components - none is sufficient, all are necessary.

If he is surrounded by a champion team who are rabid and hungry on the day. For sure. My question is should Taranto be in All Australian contention in 2023. Absolutely

There’s no such thing as a number 1 midfielder.
There’s a ruck rover, rover, centre, two wings and a ruck.
He’s obviously one of those in our best team

We really need a Callaghan and/or Green to add to Bolton, Hopper and Taranto to be Premiership contenders. Hooper even when fit has been underwhelming this year to the point of disappointing. We need a lot more from him and then some additional high-level class which is not currently on the list.

The likes of Sonsie may be handy in the future but he is not going be the difference.

Yes. Our perceptions have been warped by having Dusty in god-mode for 3 finals series in 4 years. Taranto this season is better than any midfielder Geelong has last year.

Callaghan seems the type IMO, Green is too one paced and similar to Taranto & Hopper in this respect & seemingly lacks hurt factor. Callaghan has the silk we desperately need.

TBR has raised the question and it's a good one.
Is averaging 7 clearances a game, almost 7 tackles a game and just under 1 goal a game this season.
Got it 30 times along with 7 tackles and 5 clearance in the 2019 GF against us, they're pretty good numbers, he'll do me.

Callaghan would be perfect for us, but then would be perfect for anyone, he's a jet. Kingsley will be licking his lips at the prospect of a Reid-Callaghan duo.

So many on here and from what I see elsewhere writing Hopper off way too early. You would think the lesson of bagging Taranto early on might have sunk in.

Hopper is a very good player who has been injured and also has taken a little while to be comfortable in our team. His form was fine, not awesome and certainly not poor.

Bolton, Taranto, Hopper and Prestia is right up there with the best midfields in the competition. We haven’t really had all 4 up and going this season yet.

And there is a bloke called Dusty who should be playing more mid than he does imo

He cost $700k pa and about pick 6-7 value in draft picks. You are expecting/hoping for something like a Dion Prestia for that. Taranto is in that sort of class. You don't expect a multiple Brownlow and/or Norm Smith winner as a matter of right. His salary is not prohibitive of recruiting an outstanding gun mid on $900-1m if we can locate one.

Perfect footaller? No.

Perfect recruit for our needs from what was available? Definitely.

His mate Hopper who is currently out injured is no slouch either.

Agree Hopper is underrated. I like Taranto a lot also. Sonsie, in time.

But we need to add a premium mid. Whether we trade into this years draft or simply finish bottom two (organically) in 2024, we need the next Cotchin or Martin.

To answer your question Jack, Taranto is very good but not quite #1 mid material.
