Footy media , love’m or hate’ m ?

This has been going on for so long it is not funny, and weaker teams can try and exploit it too. Remember how North Melbourne won their first flag? Exploited a rule they didn't even agree with, North opposed the 10 year rule back in the 1970s but, because they saw the potential opportunities, they were also smart enough back then to know the possible advantages if they exploited it.

Yes, we need some equalisation. The salary cap and the draft are reasonable. One issue though is that they do shift the goal posts with things like concessional picks, development zones and the like. On the other hand there will always be an issue with things like free agency, if they restrict player movement too much they will end up in court, but they have to do something.

Look back to the 1990s, an experienced player near the end of their career would have been wanting to go to North Melbourne or Essendon not Richmond. The shifting of success for different clubs takes a long time but it does happen. Likely to continue to happen too. We look like we will keep succeeding for a while yet, Geelong look ok but a lot of players very close to retirement, who knows.

The other factor which needs probably more attention, is the ability to develop players. I remember for years lamenting that we took players with high potential in drafts and they didn't work out, while more successful clubs took later picks and ended up with better players. No coincidence there, we were not as good at developing young players.

You have to develop the whole club: facilities, resources, development staff etc; to get successful.

I also think we need to think about how many teams we have. Bring in Tassie and to me the solution is a merger of 2 Melbourne clubs. Easy to say as a supporter of a big club which can resist any merger talks, but I can see this happening eventually. Better than relocation because the merged club would remain in the city it comes from. Still a very nasty business but they relocated South Melbourne and Fitzroy so it is possible.

Putting aside the specifics, I think there's a point there about what should be a concern for the competition.

Free agency is altering the landscape of the competition. We've seen a team in Geelong go on a run of high finishes that is unprecedented in the equalisation era, thanks in part to being ahead of the curve in terms of using the drafting system.

We've also seen two premiership teams in Hawthorn and us win further premierships after utilising free agency.

As a competition we would want to be paying close attention to how all that is working, there would be nothing worse than losing the ability for teams to compete with every other team.

The AFL had free agency "forced" on them when players started talking about taking them to court because they were concerned about " restraint of trade" in their work place.

Quite frankly it's just about the last thing that AFLHQ wanted.

Listen to any ex player talk, they would all give up any person all accolades they achieved, even brownlows, for a Premiership.

No one can begrudge a good player for choosing to join a club where he has the biggest chance of Premiership success.

The biggest problem with the league today is that a lot of clubs are run by morons who are unable to set out a long term plan and stick with it no matter how much pressure and *smile* they cop short term.

The AFL shouldn't look to cripple successfully run clubs like Richmond, Geelong and even West Coast, just so rabble clubs don't need to face reality.

Exactly and this is where people need to review GWS. They tied their salary cap up predominantly in 4 players.

Greene - no problem with thios one, he should be being utilised more by them through the midfield. He should be impacting games in a similar way to what Dusty did in his prime
Coniglio - Also no problem here, probably their best midfielder
Kelly - I don't understand why you would tie up so much of the salary cap in a player that is really a wingman. They said they needed to match what North offered, simply put they didn't. They should have let him walk and use that cash on the key players to take you to a premiership. Kelly IMO is not one of them
Whitfield - See above

They got it wrong and that should be the rhetoric, not that they were plundered. They got it wrong which means they are losing players. It seems like if they could afford him TT would have stayed, that comes down to salary cap decisions and when you match. All clubs have to go through this, we sure have. We went through it with Brandon Ellis (and let him leave), we did it last year with Chol (and let him leave). We did that because these roles are not the ones to tie up all your salary cap in.

Gold Coast seem to have got it now IMO. Salary cap being tied up in the right players, Ben King, Noah Anderson, Touk Miller etc.

The afl are selective with the clubs they want to cripple. They need to keep clubs like Sydney and Geelong competitive for the markets.

Note
Nothing from Richmond or AFL to do With Taranto/ hoops

It’s all coming from these organisations
Now I believe it has merit because jack confirmed it on the robbo whelan show

But we love them when we hear good news
Despise them after bad news

Either way, whether they get a smile or a slap, they love the clicks

Notice Dusty doesn’t talk to them : it doesn’t stop the stories coming

The equalisation model does not work. The principal that the draft and salary cap will combine to cause teams to rise and fall is a sound one but it cannot work in the circumstances that the competition finds itself in.

Firstly, when a team does get it right, it goes to the draft over 2 or 3 years, makes multiple sound choices and builds a solid core group. Then it switches into trade mode and augments that core group with more players of a similar age from other clubs. If they make enough good choices, then the result is five or six years of contending and, most likely multiple Premierships. It is not a coincidence that in the 21st century to date, no less than four teams have won three flags quickly. The system encourages multiple flags, not wild swings up and down the ladder. If three or four teams are in contention mode for five or six years, then players at other clubs waste whole careers at the bottom of the ladder, unless they get themselves to one of those teams.

Secondly, too many early draft choices don’t work out. This is a problem because teams remain out of contention when they get too many calls wrong. Why do so many teams make poor choices with their early picks? I’m going to answer this with another question. Why do they draft 18 year olds? They are just out of school, their bodies are not fully developed, there are too many “man-childs” and too many late bloomers. Mentally, most of them are too immature to handle being professional athletes. Believe it or not, some kids actually take their studies seriously and this affects their ability to impress recruiters from the clubs. If they waited till age 20, they would get a lot more right. Under the current system it is not as easy as just giving the underperforming teams first dibs at the talent. Maybe if the gave the bottom ten teams three draft picks each before the finalists take their first pick. Maybe.

Next, it makes no sense that every club has to pay at least 95% of the salary cap each year. This just forces the clubs at the bottom to overpay underachievers. Clubs that are contending can then appeal to their players to take a bit less money to keep the band together. Why wouldn’t they? Why wouldn’t a Tom Lynch want to move to one of these clubs?

Finally, what does every Aussie boy dream about in their sporting fantasies? Surely they all dream about playing in a big game at the MCG in front of an adoring crowd? For a kid in Melbourne, that means Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon, Carlton, maybe Melbourne and Hawthorn. Kids in Perth want to play for the Eagles, in Adelaide its the Crows. The Cats have somehow managed to convince them that it is better to be some kind of surfing Farmer Joe than to play on the MCG. Kids in NSW and Queensland dream of many things but for most, playing AFL isn’t one of them so they have to recruit from the other states. And those kids want to play on the MCG.

Equalisation is a good try but it ain’t working.

Ralph mouth.
No idea Jack
The AFL has no idea
Last week they over ruled the goal umpires decision, this week they called "umpires call' on both you couldn't tell if it was a goal or point. They used the new rule 'the bend over Richmond rule' and decided that common sense was to do it to us again and screw us.
P.s what was lynch thinking? Basic left foot snap.. fkkkkkkk

This is the fundamental problem. Good players will always want a chance to play in a Premiership. Sure there are exceptions where a player is happy being a one club player in a team struggling for success, but there's a good chance the player does believe they can make it.

The exception that proves the rule. But in saying that, I'm not sure too many supporters would have begrudged Richo if he decided to transfer to a club at the pointy end of the premiership window.

So Buddy has just signed on for another year with the Swans.

In his press conference he said he had been 50-50 earlier in the season on whether he would play again next year.

When asked whether there was any chance that he might play with another side, he answered with 'NONE".

It's just typical of the clickbait, bulls!t that we have to put up with from the ambulance chasing media scum.

It’s just mind numbing. The absolute crap, fake rubbish they produce is just mind numbing.

On another note, but yet again validating the incredibly poor standard of football journos and media personnel, that pompous moron Gerard Healy was asked the other day if Arsendon not having a coach or CEO would be impacting on their ability to attract players from other clubs at the moment. Perhaps not surprisingly, the deadsht said “No. It won’t matter.” He was then challenged furiously eg how does a prospect know that the coach actually wants him ? How does the prospect know what role they want them to play ? Etc etc etc.

Now this is a twat that’s been in the media for what, 25 plus years ? We’ve had to put up with this moron for over 25 years. Unreal. How do we do it ? BT…how long have we endured that silly, unprofessional dill ?

It’s a low low low bar the AFL media.
