Tigers too solid for Blues

Richmond has notched its first win of the pre-season, with a solid 33-point victory over Carlton at Optus Oval in a Wizard Regional Series clash.

After an even first quarter, the Tigers gained the ascendancy with a six goal to two second term, to run out winners 20.5 (125) to 13.14 (92).

Positive news for both teams was the form of forwards Matthew Richardson for Richmond and Brendan Fevola and Lance Whitnall for the Blues.

Fevola had an impact on the match from the opening minute, soccering his first goal off the ground.

He led well and marked strongly to have four goals by half-time. Richmond defender Royce Vardy struggled to contain Fevola early, but coach Danny Frawley resisted the temptation to move him in the second half and he fought back well, keeping the Blues forward goalless.

At the other end of the ground, gun Tigers forward Matthew Richardson was giving Anthony Koutoufides a major headache, particularly with his superior speed on the lead.

Richardson's accurate goalkicking was a feature of his play, booting three straight in the first half, before he was rested for most of the second.

Koutoufides, on the other hand, looked out of sorts when stationed deep in defence, but he looked more comfortable when he was switched onto the ball in the second half and given a license to roam.

Despite collecting a few early touches, Lance Whitnall had a very quiet first half, but dominated in the third quarter, scoring three goals from centre half-forward on Darren Gaspar.

Joel Bowden was close to Richmond's best, setting up many attacking moves from the midfield, while veteran Leon Cameron was useful across half-forward.

Tigers captain Wayne Campbell and ex-Bomber recruit Justin Blumfield successfully completed their first games of the pre-season. Campbell played just the first half and Blumfield the second and although neither had any real influence on the contest, Richmond coach Danny Frawley was just happy that they had some ground time.
