good for antsy. but if we dont protect ourselves we become a nation of shopkeepers, and how does that help promote r+d?

We protect ourselves by doing the R&D and staying ahead of the game. Or rather catching up as we have to do now.

how can we stay ahead when we cant afford to build what we design? smacks of the "smart country" policies that k+k used to close technical schools.and hasnt that gem of a policy served us well?lip service word play.

Using tariffs to protect industry is just another way to say "we can't build what we design".

so we can't afford to do it. What's the solution ssstone? raise protections and tariffs until we can afford to?

a time will come ansty when we cant rape the 3rd world for cheap labour.till then.... protect our own..the only reason toyota stopped being an importer was cause of goverment policy on local content, that lowered tarrif.. and that protected aus workers.

Good call mld !!

I am socially progressive, green, but economically conservative - except that I have radical ideas about new industries and opportunities.... no wonder I feel confused most of the time.

You'll find that the 3rd world actually wants the work. This allows them to develop their skills, manufacturing base, raise their own rates of pay and standards of living and so on. Rabid greens and socialists often see this as raw exploitation and sometimes it is - but this is how countries like Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia and China have industrialised their economies.

Tariffs are bad, mkay. They are generally used to protect new fledgling industries, or to protect ageing and inefficient industries or to protect against dumping of products into the domestic market. Guess which one applies here.

They have negative effects on both the foreign economy and the local economy. They raise the price of the product for the consumer - us - meaning we can save less or spend less on other things. Or do without the product altogether. The benefits in terms of protecting industries and jobs is more than offset by negative effects of increased taxes and costs of administering the tariff. Tariffs reduce international trade - bad for economic growth. There is always the danger that if we introduce tariffs, other countries will retaliate by introducing or increasing tariffs to penalise our exports. This further inhibits trade and slows economic growth in both economies further.

Tariffs are good for the protected industry and workers in that industry but are bad for absolutely everyone else.

after reading your post ant,i think you might object to paying a little bit more for your goods cause well paid australians might make them? what would the same goods cost if the chinese/indian worker was entitled to the same conditions/wages our workers need? im not green.. but absolutely believe we rape poorer countries thru imports

Depends mate. Some things I buy on price, some things I buy on quality and features.

Again with the rape metaphor. Having spent considerable time in some of the countries you mention I'll assure you again that yes, they do want the work.

i agree that they want the work.. i dont however agree it should come so cheaply. and yes again with the "RAPE" metahor....we rape 3 rd world countries and rape our own cause its CHEAPER? what happens ant when we cant import cheap crap,to feed our throw away society ?when we actually have to pay menial workers in other countries the same rates/demands we enjoy????

If some of the countries I've been to achieve half the standard of living we have, I'll be damn happy for them and their people.

Agree with you completely about the cheap crap and the throw away society. It makes me sick - we want so much and actually need so little.
