Kangaroo Karaoke

Reckons he came home from the pub absolutely plastered and wrote it in ten minutes, too.

Ready never heard that. Could explain some of the lyrics though.
I remember something about the song made the UK charts before it was released in the UK.

It's in the liner notes for Dig the New Breed and in a few interviews and things I've read.

Think the single was released in the US first and then in the UK as an import before its official release? ??? Remember reading something along those lines.

OK, one of my favourites: Absolute Beginners (and no, Weller didn't read the novel first)

(Weller)

In echoed steps I walked across an empty dream
I looked across this world, there was no one to be seen
This empty feeling turned and quietly walked away
I saw no warmth in life - no Love was in my eyes!

I stared a century thinking this will never change
As I hesitated, time rushed onwards without me
Too scared to break the spell, too small to take a fall
But the Absolute luck is: Love is in our hearts!

I lost some hours thinking of it
I need the strength to go and get what I want
I lost a lifetime thinking of it
And lost an era daydreaming like I do...

I stared a century thinking this will never change
As I hesitated, time rushed onwards without me
Too scared to break the spell, too small to take a fall
But the Absolute luck is: Love is in our hearts!

In echoed steps you walk across an empty dream
But look around this world, there's millions to be seen
Come see the tyrants panic see their crumbling empires fall
Then tell 'em we don't fight for fools cos Love is in our hearts!

I lost some hours thinking of it
I need the strength to go and get what I want
I lost a lifetime thinking of it
And lost an era daydreaming like I do

You can lose some hours thinking of it
You need the strength to go and get what you want
You can lose a lifetime thinking of it
And lose an era daydreaming like I do...

Well Done
Mr Weller had a bit of talent. Although what the hell was he thinking with the Style Council
A socialist playing lounge muzak

One of the great questions of popular music. The Jam were pretty much at the height of their fame in 1982. People went to the first Style Council gig to throw mud at Weller. 'Shout to the Top' I don't mind but there's an awful lot of rubbish in the Style Council catalogue.

PRETTY GREEN
==========
The Jam

I've got a pocket full of pretty green -
I'm gonna put it in the fruit machine -
I'm gonna put it in the juke box -
It's gonna play all the records in the hit parade -
This is the pretty green - this is society
You can't do nothing - unless it's in the pocket
- oh no -

I've got a pocket full of pretty green
I'm gonna give it to the man behind the counter
He's gonna give me food and water -
I'm gonna eat that and look for more -

And they didn't teach me that in school -
It's something that I learnt on my own -
That power is measured by the pound or the fist -
It's as clear as this oh -

I've got a pocket full of Pretty Green!

Down in The Tube Station at Midnight
==========================
The Jam

The distant echo -
Of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
To take them home to
The ones that they love and who love them forever
The glazed, dirty steps - repeat my own and reflect my thoughts
Cold and uninviting, partially naked
Except for toffee wrapers and this morning’s paper
Mr. jones got run down
Headlines of death and sorrow - they tell of tomorrow
Madmen on the rampage
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight
I fumble for change - and pull out the queen
Smiling, beguiling
I put in the money and pull out a plum
Behind me
Whispers in the shadows - gruff blazing voices
Hating, waiting
Hey boy they shout - have you got any money?
And I said - I’ve a little money and a take away curry,
I’m on my way home to my wife.
She’ll be lining up the cutlery,
You know she’s expecting me
Polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight

I first felt a fist, and then a kick
I could now smell their breath
They smelt of pubs and wormwood scrubs
And too many right wing meetings
My life swam around me
It took a look and drowned me in it’s own existence
The smell of brown leather
It blended in with the weather
It filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth
It blocked all my senses
Couldn’t see, hear, speak any longer
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight
I said I was down in the tube station at midnight

The last thing that I saw
As I lay there on the floor
Was jesus saves painted by an atheist nutter
And a british rail poster read have an awayday - a cheap holiday -
Do it today!
I glanced back on my life
And thought about my wife
’cause they took the keys - and she’ll think it’s me
And I’m down in the tube station at midnight
The wine will be flat and the curry’s gone cold
I’m down in the tube station at midnight
Don’t want to go down in a tube station at midnight

Place your hands on my face....Close my eyes and say...

*screaming* Ah 1,2,3,4......

Should of been, could of been
Would of been dead
If I didn't get the message
Goin' to my head
I am what I am
Most *smile*
Don't give a damn
Aw baby think you can
Be my girl, I'll be your man

Come-on full of fun
Do me 'till I'm well done
Little Bo peep
Cumin' from my stun gun
Beware... take care
Most *smile*
Have a cold ass stare
Aw baby please be there
Suck my kiss cut me my share

Hit me you can't hurt me
Suck my kiss
Kiss me please pervert me
Stick with this
Is she talking dirty
Give to me sweet sacred bliss
Your mouth was made to suck my kiss

Look at me can't you see
All I really want to be
Is free from a world
That hurts me
I need relief
Do you want me girl
To be your thief
Aw baby just for you
I'd steal anything that you want me to

K - I - S - S - I - N - G
Chicka chicka dee
Do me like a banshee
Low brow is how
Swimming in the sound
Of bow wow wow
Aw baby do me now
Do me here I do allow

Hit me you can't hurt me
Suck my kiss
Kiss me please pervert me
Stick with this
Is she talking dirty
Give to me sweet sacred bliss
Your mouth was made to...

Should of been, could of been
Would of been dead
If I didn't get the message
Goin' to my head
I am what I am
Most *smile*
Don't give a damn
Aw baby think you can
Be my girl, I'll be your man

All My Life

All my life I've been searching for something
Something never comes never leads to nothing
Nothing satisfies but I'm getting close
Closer to the prize at the end of the rope
All night long I dream of the day
When it comes around then it's taken away
Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most
The feeling comes to life when I see your ghost

Come down don't you resist
You have such a delicate wrist
And if I give it a twist
Something to hold when I lose my grip
Will I find something in that
To give me just what I need
Another reason to bleed
ONE BY ONE hidden up my sleeve
ONE BY ONE hidden up my sleeve

Hey don't let it go to waste
I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keeping me down

Hey don't let it go to waste
I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keeping me down

Will I find a believer
Another one who believes
Another one to deceive
Over and over down on my knees
If I get any closer
And if you open up wide
And if you let me inside
On and on I've got nothing to hide
On and on I've got nothing to hide

Hey don't let it go to waste
I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keeping me down

Hey don't let it go to waste
I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keeping me down

All my life I've been searching for something
Something never comes never leads to nothing
Nothing satisfies but I'm getting close
Closer to the prize at the end of the rope
All night long I dream of the day
When it comes around then it's taken away
Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most
The feeling comes to life when I see your ghost

And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one

And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one
And I'm done, done and I'm onto the next one!!!!

Hey don't let it go to waste
I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keeping me down

Hey don't let it go to waste
I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keeping me down

Done done and i'm onto the next one
Done I'm done and I'm onto the next

>:D

You betcha baby!!! :-* >:D

Just listening to U2 whilst touching up the war paint.......... >:D Have a good one too!

1,2,3,4...

High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here
At corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse
You elevate my soul

I've got no self control
Been living like a mole now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation

A star
Lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you can educate my mind

Explain all these controls
Can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation

A mole
Digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation

I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation

Love
Lift me up out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you

A mole
Digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation

Higher now
In the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation

Elevation
Elevation
Elevation

Good Lord. That's quite enough of that, thank you. ;D

Right. All Saints Day tradition. Since 1998, anyway. Which is to always play this album in full.

(Cocker/Banks/Doyle/Mackey/Webber)

Laid here
With the advertising sliding past my eyes
Like cartoons
From other people's lives
I start to wonder
What it takes to be a man...

Well, I learned to drink
And I learned to smoke
And I learned to tell
A dirty joke
Oh, if that's all there is then there's no point for me.... oh!

So please can I ask just why we're alive?
'Cos all that you do seems such a waste of time
And if you hang around too long you'll be a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an
(Tell me 'bout it!)

Your car can get up to a hundred and ten
You've nowhere to go but you'll go there again
And nothing ever makes no difference to a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an

So you stumble into town with your stomach in
Show 'em what you've got (though they've seen everything)
Yeah, you're a beauty, but they've seen your type before, oh oooh..

You've got no need
But still you want
So go and book
That restaurant
The wine will flow, and then you'll just fly
Away!
Hey-ey-ey...

So please can I ask just why we're alive?
'Cos all that you do seems such a waste of time
And if you hang around too long you'll be a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an
(Tell me 'bout it!)

Your car can go up to a hundred and ten
You've nowhere to go but you'll go there again
And nothing ever makes no difference to a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an...

Oh, tell me 'bout it!
Now please can I ask just why we're alive?
'Cos all that you do seems such a waste of time
And if you hang around too long you'll be a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an
(Oh, tell, c'mon, tell me 'bout it!)

Your car can get up to a hundred and ten
You've nowhere to go but you'll go there again
And nothing ever makes no difference to a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an
To a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an!
To a ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-an!
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh!
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh!
To a man....
(That's what I am.)

Something for the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar

I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical,
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
I'm very well acquainted too with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news---
With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.

I'm very good at integral and differential calculus,
I know the scientific names of beings animalculous;
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's,
I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox,
I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus,
In conics I can floor peculiarities parablous.
I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
I know the croaking chorus from the Frogs of Aristophanes,
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore,
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.

Then I can write a washing bill in Balylonic cuneiform,
And tell you every detail of Caractacus's uniform;
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin",
When I can tell at sight a chassepôt rifle from a javelin,
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat",
When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery,
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery:
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy,
You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee---

For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury,
Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Major-General.

When I was a lad I served a term
As office boy to an attorney's firm
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor
And I polished up the handle of the big front door
I polished up that handle so carefully
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navy

As office boy I made such a mark
That they gave me the post of a junior clerk
I served the writs with a smile so bland
And I copied all the letters in a big round hand
I copied all the letters in a hand so free
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navy

In serving writs I made such a name
That an articled clerk I soon became
I wore clean collars and a brand-new suit
For the Pass Examination at the Institute
And that Pass Examination did so well for me
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navy

Of legal knowledge I acquired such a grip
That they took me into the partnership
And that junior partnership I ween
Was the only ship that I ever had seen
But that kind of ship so suited me
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navy

I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament
I always voted at my Party's call
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all
I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen's Navy

Now, landsmen all, whoever you may be
If you want to rise to the top of the tree
If your soul isn't fettered to an office stool
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea
And you all may be Rulers of the Queen's Navy

A fruitless search has just been undertaken for the lyrics of "The Drovers Dog" by Redgum, sung to the same tune as the post above....

Any assistance would be appreciated?

There's a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
Of what you are
There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

It's a long road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold
You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt
Will disappear

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don't let anyone
Tear them away
Hold on
There will be tomorrow
In time
You'll find the way

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

:'( Mariah Carey... beautiful.
