Sorry - what’s being measured here?

Edit: Presumably players still at the Club?

What do you define as a “success”?

Average number of games played for a draftee is around 50 however that’s heavily skewed towards the high picks. Of course, not all games played are equal and some players will have a far greater impact in 50 games than others will in 150.

What about trading? Also you got to compare our results to other clubs for fairness. Not all drafts are equal so while it may look like we did poorly in one year but so did 10 other clubs.

And why not include rookies on each year? Surely it doesn’t matter where you get players as long as you get them?

There was a guy that was a bit of an expert on draft history on SEN in the lead up to the draft and he went through every clubs picks from about 2011 onwards, it was surprising the small % of draftee's that were still on clubs lists after 3 years time. More player's don't make it than do so it is a stark reminder to lower strike rate expectations from our picks.

The one that really hurts in that period is lennon before Cripps.
We would win 5 in a row with cripps

It's amazing that this years premiership side had 6 players who were drafted as Rookies:clap2
Would have to be an AFL record.

We've had a very good strike rate in the Rookie Draft which makes it more strange that we skipped taking anyone as a rookie this year.

So it means the club has a quiet confidence in our draft intake. Which I share atm. Only about 1/3 of draftees are still at their club after a few years, so currently everyone's equal. All clubs' selections look great ... for a year or two at least.

I think we have room for another 2 players. We did well getting Syd with a supplemental selection and Marlion in the mid-season draft, we might be going down that pathway.

Nice rewrite of history.
Don't know why you separated out draft from other picks or trades.

2006 - 2/5 (40%) Riewoldt, Edwards, Connors, Peterson, Collins. PSD Kingsley. Trade Polak. Rookie Clingan King
2007 - Cotchin, Rance, Putt. PSD Gourdis. Trade McMahon, Morton. Rookie Collard, Sylvestor, Cartledge, Howat.
2008 - Vickery, Post, Hislop. PSD Cousins. Trade Thomson. Rookie Nahas, Gourdis, Browne, Gilligan.
2009 - Martin, Griffiths, Astbury, Dea, Taylor, Webberley, Nason. PSD Grimes. Trade Farmer. Rookie Hicks, Contin, Roberts, Westhoff, Polak.
2010 - Conca, Batchelor, Helbig, McDonald, Derrickx, Gourdis. PSD Houli. Trade Grigg. Rookie Jakobi, Miller, Hislop.
2011 - B Ellis, Elton, Arnot. PSD O'Halloran. Trade Maric, Morris. Rookie O'Hanlon, A Maric, Darrou, Verrier, Turner, Wright, Heslin.
2012 - Vlastuin, McIntosh, McBean, MacDonough. FA Knights, Chaplin. Trade Edwards. Rookie , Lonergan, Stephemson, Williams.
2013 - Lennon, Gordon, Lloyd. Trade Hampson. Rookie Banfield, Miles, Thomas.
2014 - C Ellis, Menadue, Butler, McKenzie. Trade Hunt. Rookie Short, Castagna, Lambert, Arnot, Soldo.
2015 - Rioli, Markov, Broad. Trade Yarran, Townsend. DFA A Moore. Rookie C Moore, Chol, Marcon.

In your separate list of Trades etc you note:
3 of 15 (20%)Trades (I would say Grigg would be a plus so 4/15)
1 (25%) of 4 FA.
2 (33%) of 6 PSD.
There were 0/31 rookies from 2006 to 2013.
You have 10 rookie picks (2014 - 4, 2015 - 1, 2017- 1, 2018 - 4)

Above is the full list of picks from 2006 to 2015.
I don't know why posters insist on presenting edited recruiting picks rather than the entire lists since they obviously have those full lists.

Gees we wasted a lot of picks on Gourdis.

No one stopped Redan making his own thread topic.
I though I clearly noted in the title that I was referring to national draft which is distinct from the other recruiting formats.

We can moan all we like about past errors.
But it all lead to us creating an era of dominance.
Had we picked Cripps, would we be where we are?
We have created a great system, where all players have bonded and work with a purpose to help each other get better. The club selects the players, it is up to both parties to improve each other.
Young men need to be guided and taught values that help them in life and football.
The argument that you just make them learn football is passe.
They need to grow as people, find purpose to be the best they can is far more important. We have helped people deal with their issues and helped their lives, made them whole, and the results show .
Hawthorn created a system in the 70s and set the club up for sustained success.
We are doing it now and are having success because we are dealing with the whole person, not just the footballer.

Yep. The reason The club might pass on a good player, highly rated in phantom drafts, is they don’t meet the character test.
