Pick the Brownlow trifecta

Some of the umpires' voting in our games quite baffling e.g. we got a draw against Dorks in last match, right? But not even one of our players got a vote. Other similar odd results other games.

But no real surprise, eh? It's the AFL umps.

Delighted that Shai won MotY - well deserved. My view in the poll on PRE was that I rated it higher than JR's as just so exciting, a genuine speccie. (It helped seeing it live right in front of me too!)

But Shai should have won GotY too for that dodging and weaving one. Better than Serong's fluke. Not even nominated. But that's determined by a silly competition I think, pop vote, not the umps.
Who would you have given votes in round 23?

We could barely poll when winning flags so no surprises our total vote count this year was appalling.

How does Walsh gain so many votes from a losing team?
Over the past few days I've located the newspaper reports on the 1931-34 Brownlows at trove.nla.gov.au, including round-by-round voting. Something that jumped out immediately was how rarely umpires gave the 3-2-1 to the same (or winning) team.

In 1931-34 it happened only 10 times in 417 voting games (excluding draws), or 2.4%. In 2 of those 10 games, all the votes went to the losing side (margins of 19 and 32 points).

In 2021 it happened in 100 of 195 games that weren't draws, and never to the losing side.

Average winning margin in voting games 1931-34 was 30 points; this year it was 29 points.

There has been a massive switch away from recognising players on the losing side since the 3-2-1 system was introduced.

Fitzroy won 33 matches in 6 years 1931-36, yet provided 5 of the 6 Brownlow winners. Can't happen today.

There’s no doubt the Brownlow is still seen as the bees knees award , however I think footy fans just have to take it for what it is, it’s an umpires award , that’s all, yes great history and a huge honour to be a Brownlow medallist.

Theres so many awards now, I don’t think the Brownlow needs to be changed in anyway , fact is there’s about 800 odd players who don’t win it every year , wether they are Backs, Forwards or mids it don’t matter.

Plenty of opportunities for players other then midfielders to win individual honors , B&Fs , MVP, players awards , coaches awards , however as we all know midfielders are always the best players , even gun flankers are just wanna be midfielders and the tall blokes , well their just that, tall.

Surprising that the umpires who didn't give us free kicks all year also didn't give us Brownlow votes.

The brownlow was typified in rd22 Dees V Crows.

dees won by 41. 15 of clayton olivers 28 were contested. fritch kicked 7.

seedmans got 3 votes with 38 disposals, 30 of which were uncontested.

wines is a contested beast. But they should call it what it is ...The Brownlow Medal for The Most Possessions.

the only exceptions were 2012 and 2017, and they *smile* up 2012 initially.

did anyone else conclude that Brisbane's culture is a bit *smile* (zorko captain? Der) from their carry-on during the count? Classless, banal, unprofessionalism. Will not succeed without a cultural overhaul

I didn’t expect us to poll all that well given our season, but fourth last for votes and only 2 votes from finishing second last ? Cmon. Another example of the anti Richmond sentiment that pervades inside of the AFL - including our umpire friends.

We finished on top of the ladder in 2018 with 72 points and the best we could do in the Brownlow for total team votes was 6th. Get ****.

The AFL and the umpires hate us.

There's no doubt the hatred of us from the AFL filters down to the umps.

I will line up Bomtmytelly, Oliver, Petrecca, Wines and Gawn.
I would go
Bompmytelly
Gawn
Oliver
Wines
Petrecca.
The Bont had the same look that Jeremy Howe had at the brownlow several years ago

all a bit of a joke really for the reasons mentioned above. Another reflection of AFL incompetence.

They don't give us blatant free kicks, they aren't going to give us votes.
We are the only team that can win by 8 goals and not get all the votes and we are the only team that can draw and still not get 1 single vote.
The outstanding award in football these day is the MVP voted by the coaches
