Re: PRE 2015 Phantom Draft Now Up and Running
Carlton have the prized number 1 pick and have decided to adopt the Clarkson theory of building a spine first and then picking off midfielders later. It then becomes a difficult choice between Schache & Weitering, the former being more value as a true A lister but also the player who comes with slightly more risk. Having been seduced by U/18 state performances before when it comes to goal kickers, I'm resisting the temptation this year. Here's some names from the all time top 10 - Patton (18), McDonough (17), Hourigan (16), Brandan Matera (16), Troy Menzel (15), Shane Kersten (15), Jack Watts (15).
Granted, Schache has smashed the record with 24 but in the end I'm slightly nervous about his relative lack of leg speed, so far we've seen Boyd struggle to live up to expectations and he suffers from a similar handicap. That's not to say either player won't carve out a strong career but for pick 1 I want to be 100% certain I'm grabbing a future star. Weitering is every bit as good as Harry Taylor in my opinion, possibly even better given there's a chance he could pinch hit in the middle in the same vain as Roughie. I don't know how SOS will go on draft night but I'm pretty comfortable knowing I've just picked up a 200 game CHB and a player who is the first critical piece in the spinal surgery of the CFC.
Pick 1.
Jacob Weitering (Vic Country, Dandenong Stingrays)
