RICHMOND staged the biggest comeback in club history today to beat Hawthorn by 20 points at the MCG.

The Tigers won their fourth match in a row 18.7 (115) to 14.11 (95).

Richmond's recovery from 51 points behind in the second term beat the recovery from a 48-point deficit in 1982 to beat Sydney at the SCG.

Greg Stafford and Mark Coughlan, two of the key figures in the comeback, kicked three goals apiece while midfielder Kane Johnson was best afield.

There are again major questions about the Hawks, who were outstanding early and then went missing in action en masse in the second half.

Richmond looked gone when Hawthorn's lead hit 51 points 22 minutes into the second term.

But Hawks ruck-forward Peter Everitt, one of his side's best early, was forced off with a suspected fractured cheekbone midway through the second quarter.

His clash in the ruck with Tigers ruckman Greg Stafford will probably come under video review and the incident undoubtedly hurt the Hawks badly.

Hawthorn kicked another two goals after Everitt went off, but Richmond kicked the last four goals of the second term to trail by 27 points at the main break.

The Tigers then kicked 7.2 to two behinds in the third term to lead by 15 points at the last change.

Richmond kicked 14 unanswered goals between 22 minutes into the second quarter and 15 minutes into the last term.

Tigers full-forward Matthew Richardson had to limp off in the third term with a suspected right hamstring injury, after coming back today from a week off with a fractured cheekbone.

Hawthorn was as brilliant early in the match as it was disgraceful after half time.

It mauled the Tigers in the middle, kicking eight goals to two in the first term to lead by 38 points.

Captain Shane Crawford and Sam Mitchell were feeding off Everitt's ruck work and Rayden Tallis was strong across half-back.

Hawthorn full-back Jonathan Hay was a late withdrawal with a hand injury.
