Richmond fans are competing for the most obscure direct link to the thinking of the club's football department during up coming trade period.
Patrick Ngyuen of Margate claims a solid source on his latest Joel Bowden trade rumour
"Look, I'm hearing all sorts of stuff. . .all of it true. Bowden's off to Western Bulldogs for a kick up the arse and a Mars Bar. That's certain. It's gunna happen. I've got bona fide contacts. Once, I sold a hot water system to a bloke who had his hair cut by a woman who's sister was driving past Punt Road Oval the other day and she had to stop at the pedestrian walk because a Richmond Board member (I can't say who) was crossing. I know a lot of Tigers who'd have ignored the red lights and kept on driving, but she wanted to know. . .and he told her."
Other fans are trolling through websites and discussion forums and some are even taking posts on these boards as gospel.
Wendy Schwass, of Ivanhoe is telling friends that she keeps reading about the latest movements on puntroadend.netfirms.com and can't believe how well connected the posters are.
"It's incredible. These people know cousins of people who know actual players. One bloke shares a house with a guy who drinks with a waiter who served Richo once during the Grand Final Breakfast. I'll never get that close to a player. I've never even met one, but that's my own fault. Until I can afford a $1000 a year membership, I'll just have to miss out."
TigerJunket of Richmond said "I was in the shower, when I overheard myself think about a trade involving Ben Holland, Fiora, some mangoes and a 3rd round draft pick. Put it up on www.bigfooty.com and it was on 3AW within 5 mins. You'd reckon some journos would do real research. . "
Fans are also having to specialise this year in exactly who they are spreading rumours about. The sheer quantity of sightings and trade bait talks has forced most supporters to think carefully about how much time they spend passing off rumour as fact.
Shane Bernshire of Kangaroo Ground is focusing on Richardson trade rumours only this year.
"Look last year, I was spending a lot of time collating data and scenarios on Kevin Bartlett coming back to the club, the Carey/Torney/Johnson deal and the Blumfield situation. This year there's so much more and there's only so much info that a bloke can filter. So this year I'm a Richo Rumour Monger only."
