Samson Ryan

Hang on, so now you go from Max Gawn and Tim English comparisons to an emerging five weeks of Lloyd Meek as a good result and a benchmark of success?

Max Gawn (the best ruck of his generation) and Tim English? From who? Certainly not Leysy so no idea of the relevance of quoting them as have never compared them. #confused.

The bar is continually lowered and lowered and lowered. Fair dinkum if you have to wait eight years and another three years to get Lloyd Meek that’s a win??? Rather trade for an Ivy Maric, Toby Nankervous, Darcy Cameron or any other ruck example. Even Bully’s love child Bailey Williams is a better result.

Lloyd Meek is the best emerging ruck in the AFL (accordng to you) at 26.

We all want Samson to be that emerging ruck. But he has time. By your own metrics.

Or does only he need to do it by 23?

From what I saw today during game and in the breaks he is a yapper and a leader with plenty of enthusiasm. Hope it all works out for him as a player because seems like a good bloke with a fair bit of want for the contest

I’m gathering Oooze has 2024 as education year for him , however not sure there’s much point keeping him running around in the twos , we currently have a perfect role for him and if he is ever going to be any good he has to be at least able to impact now , see zero point in playing a Pickett in a forward role when a much bigger player in Ryan should be playing the contested aerial forward role , Pickett can be used elsewhere, if that continues I see this season as absolute waste in Ryan’s development.

Your Samson cohort's have sprouted the paths of English and Gawn and sprouted Ryan following in those footsteps. You've had All Australian calls, next premiership captain calls. I've never seen a player with more hype and less performance.

Meek isn't my metric. And he totally defeats your argument. Hawthorn traded for him. They didn't invest 8 years. JOM to Freo for Meek and a future second. Essentially steak knives. I'd rather go get a ruck that is ready at 24 than take a spot for 8 years until you might get a result.

He will play this week, he has to. David Honeybun is the other option. And it's a free hit. Playing forward in a side that hasn't kicked over 50 points in a month, it's a tough ask. However, he can show a competitive side, he can halve contests, he can look he's trying.

I missed the game unfortunately. How did Samson go? Stats don't seem great on the face of it.
I went and would best describe it as a crowded mess. I think we were trying to minimise damage, all players in one half of the ground - very little opportunity for either Samson or Kos to influence in the air. That was second half especially
Samson was off the ground last quarter but seemed ok - was no value him being out there really so yeah probably a safeguard until ooze and select know what they are going to do

What ?

You don’t let a 23 year old 206cm ruck who has shown he can play at AFL level go ….

What has clearly been happening is that they want him to play significant time in the ruck and to do that he has to be playing vfl atm
Don't think he has shown that he can be a N1 AFL ruck Sin. Certainly not a kf. Slow, poor game sense, lacks physicality and can't take a contested mark.

Not worth the further investment IMO.

We will disagree on this one. I reckon he showed plenty last year when we had both Nank and Soldo out and he rucked with Miller as the back up.

I would now play Ryan for the rest of the season for development and structure. This gives options to play 3 talls with Myketi and Bolta, flexibility to sent Bolta back while having two talls.

Do you think Ryan's development as a ruck is best served by playing in the forward line in the AFL or by rucking in the VFL, or maybe a mix of both?

I've been saying for years we do not respect the ruck position. We never think about drafting rucks anywhere under pick 50, and the ones we do pick up have basically never played football! We are gonna pay the price for this soon.
