Coburg Still Search For 1st Win
Sunday 4 May 2003
Coburg Tigers are still searching for their first victory of season 2003 after losing to Geelong in Round 5.

In windy conditions on Saturday the Burgers made the trip down the highway to Skilled Stadium desparate for a win. Coach Spargo had selected a team full of run with the inclusion of Djaren Whyman and after winning the toss and electing to kick with the aid of a strong breeze we were set for an exciting game.

In the first quarter Coburg had plenty of opportunity with Billy Nicholls, Eric Kuret and Nick Gieschen constantly winning the ball out of the middle. Royce Vardy was once again proving lively up forward with the exciting Whyman and Taylor peppering the goals. Unfortunately the Tigers missed 4 very gettable goals and as a result held only a 2 point lead at the break.

In the second term Geelong midfield pair Peter Street and David Spriggs began to give their team the ascendancy and Coburg's defence was forced to stand tall. Reliable defenders Dean Talbot and Leigh Carlson were given some headaches with the amount of forward thrusts by Geelong, but to their credit they fought hard and provided plenty of counter attacks. Chris Hyde came into the game across the wing and was crucial in running the ball into the wind and providing the forwardline with opportunities. Debutant Whyman was showing fans why he was picked up by Hawthorn in 2001 with his flair around goal and his speed to run down opponents. In an armwrestle for the entire quarter both teams kicked 4 goals 2. At the main break Coburg still held a 2 point lead.

After the break the game lifted in tempo and the intensity of both sides could not be doubted. Coburg were showing the sort of form that got them to within a couple of points of last years Grand Final. Once again Geelong were on top in the midfield and Coburg defenders were forced to lead the way and be the driving force of most of the attacks. Hyde and Nicholls were getting a heap of possessions and Vardy stood tall, even though he had 2 opponents playing on him. The game was turning into a free flowing affair and both teams had plenty of scoring chances. It was a titanic struggle, Coburg would kick away and Geelong would fight back. In what proved to be a huge blow for Coburg, Hyde went off late in the term with severe cramps. At three quarter time the match was still anyone's with Coburg holding a slender 3 point margin.

Spargo needed the boys to stand up and be counted. All Coburg had to do was beat Geelong in the last quarter to register their first victory. It proved a task too great. With no Hyde and an extremely sore Nicholls, after recieving a heay knock, Coburg lost all momentum out of the centre. Geelong kicked 2 quick goals and were full of confidence and running as their supporters started to get involved. The Coburg boys started turning the ball over and were punished at every occasion. The defence which had held strong all day finally was beaten. Geelong kicked 6 goals to 2 in the last term to run out 21 point victors.

Better players for Coburg were Billy Nicholls who had 29 possessions and 9 tackles, Chris Hyde with 24 in 3 quarters, Leigh Carlson, who once again was reliable in defence and Djaren Whyman showed plenty in his first game for Coburg kicking 4 goals.
