Still giving us nothing...'cept Cups and Medals

A couple of snippets from Fagan on the radio today -

I’d like to think if we can maintain our rate of inside 50s that we had last year, we can convert a few of those to scores. Even know we were number one for offence, I thought we could’ve done a bit better in that regard.

“The bottom line is our biggest improvement last year is for the first time, the club finished in the positive for contested ball differential and we’ve got to make sure we maintain and improve in that.”

Still talking stats. Perhaps he thinks supercoach wins are more important?

What about that peanut Barrett? Tipped against us in every final as well as the last 2 H&A games against Eagles and Brisbane.

He's a great judge  ; we won 12 in a row to finish the year :rotfl2
He was one of the first to write us off when Rance did his knee. Never retracted it, either, even after we proved him wrong. He’ll be saltier than ever about us this year.

No Barrett fan but while it looks extremely stupid in hindsight, the only one of those games where we were a clear hot favourite going in was the Round 23 game against Brisbane. I doubt even the Lions were concerned with winning that. Just a competitve outing at the G would have been enough going into the following week.

DerWayne interviewing Shannon Hurn reckons they were the best team in it last year and should won it!

Fmd, I thought the best team in it actually won the flag.... didn’t make the top 4 last time I checked. ...

The Weagles lost all credibility in Round 23 last year. One of the biggest last round chokes ever.
With a top four spot on the line, they lost at home to a team whose final eight chances were academic at best. Even with a win, the Bulldogs would have had to have lost at home to Adelaide (whose season was over) for Hawthorn to get in.

Doesn't matter which coach comes on Dwayne Pipe will label them the best team of the season.

Such a pitiful excuse.

I'm pretty sure that we had no Rance.
Dusty copped a corkie in the first couple of minutes of the game.
Fridge played almost the entire game with one wing flappin in the breeze.
Cotch tweaked an ankle or calf first half n spent some time hobbling.
Broady got KO,d n finished the game in la la land on the bench.
The Moggies still had 22 fit players at games end n we'd conceded them a three n a half goal lead half way through the game. But the reason they lost was that the Tommyhawk didn't play.
Phhhhhht, **** ants all went n queued up in a crazy little conga line looking for some sweet sugar to celebrate with at half time instead of playing a whole game.

Wow, that's some analysis, clearly we should have lost . . . but we didn't :cupgold

The other thing about the whole Hawkins (non) argument is that they were in front at half time without him. If they were so great they would have maintained that, but they didn’t. I’d almost argue that one of they key reasons they were in front (apart from our game being slightly off) is their unpredictability without him. Had he played we might have actually won by more.

Apparently so @Jonesracing82 ....... DerWayne likes to have a bob each way depending on the interviewee. Talkin *smile* is the key criteria for employment with Hutchinson.
Might try and find both those bits of audio for a laugh!

They all like to stroke whoever they are interviewing with promise and platitudes (as se7en said a few posts up) but they only go hard when it’s just themselves talking.

Listening to the radio yesterday, it was again mentioned how well Brisbane fared statistically against us in the GABBA Final

It was also mentioned that they would have only lost by 5 points had they kicked straighter. No mention of the fact that we were kicking our goals from the goal square. I'm waiting for the AFL to bring in an Off Side rule to try to stop us.

Maybe we should just set up speakers at each end of the ground for when the oppostion takes possession and tries to work their way through our defensive set up and just play this..............

Yes they would have still lost

That's one reason I dunno about the lions.... too much Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda coming out of there and the coach is leading the way.
If we look back to our loss against the pies in the prelim, we copped it on the chin, told the rest of the footy world we were beaten by a better team (even if we didn't believe it)....then just got back down to business!

I don't often agree with Cornes but his call that the Lions 2020 will be the Melb 2019 has merit. Much tougher draw because they finished in the Top 6, no Hodge etc. I can see them get a whack from the reality stick

footywire.com has our run home as

$1.32 v St.Kilda
$1.19 v Gold Coast
$1.44 v GWS
$1.31 v Port
$1.58 v Collingwood
$1.22 v Melbourne
$1.23 v Carlton
$1.54 v West Coast
$1.41 v Brisbane
$1.71 v Brisbane
$1.34 v Geelong
$1.41 v GWS

Barrett wrote us off early and it unbalanced his judgement. He kept tipping what he wanted to happen.

Plus they need another good run injury wise

We had a bad last round choke in 1980 against South Melbourne getting done by 9 goals, maybe it might of paid for the footy trip.

He is the modern day Northey. Bomb it in long and hope. Let's he sticks with it.

I remember after the QF against Fitzroy I looked at the graphic of shots on goal (on an app, haven't found a pic online). Their shots at goal were from a long way out, or a big angle, or both. Our shots were close in and slight angles. The scoreline was no surprise when you looked at that.

There was a reason the Lions couldn't get it through the goals, we were forcing them wide and not letting them get shots from close in.

If other teams don't get that then we keep going on our merry way. But, while the media goes on about the stats, I'm sure the other clubs have pulled this sort of thing apart and know exactly what is happening. Countering it is another matter.

If having an each way bet is the criteria i am shocked the one who calls himself "chicken" isn't among the line up
