I just read a truely beautiful stat on the Roar.

The last time both the top 2 teams lost their first final was 1980.

So I went investigating and:

The last time this happened Geelong also finished on top of the ladder and the tigers finished third.

The last time this happened Collingwood made it to the grand final and a Footscray player won the Brownlow (how is the Bont placed this year)

Their opponent in the grand final was, yes Richmond

The year was 1980, and we all remember that Grand final don’t we.

Just saying

PS - the title of this thread needs to be updated.

I think your post is more accurate if you re-word the line i highlighted in purple above.

We can also add that the last 4 times we have beaten Geeling in a final we have gone on to win the flag. So there is an omen for ya if the cats get up this week.

I'm not sure 1980 qualifies for this stat. There was only one QF and the teams that lost in week 1 of the finals had finished 2nd and 4th. Geelong (1st) lost a semi-final in week 2. Another article doing the rounds on this might have been referring to 1926, top 2 teams lost in week 1.

That 1926 stat is nonsense. 1980 qualifies no less than 1926 does.
In 1926, the top two teams each lost their first final but they were not played on the same weekend.
How is 1980 any different?
In fact, 1980 qualifies moreso because both of the top two sides lost their first (and only) two finals. Geelong in weeks 2 and 3, and Carlton in weeks 1 and 2.
So I don't know where they got their 1926 stat from.

1980 is rather unique in that the lower placed team won every final - until Grand Final day that is.
But that only happened because Richmond fluffed the last game against South Melbourne. We'd otherwise been on top since Round 7 and were clearly the best side in the comp.

An interesting stat until last year’s PF was that whenever our club has finished the season on top we have then played in the GF.

Perhaps surprisingly, Richmond has never been bundled out of the finals in straight sets after finishing in the top four. Collingwood has done it 12 times, and Carlton 9.

Things are very much falling into place at Tigerland. Bolton and Naish sign on for another two years, Reserves finished on top, McCrae wins coach of the year, Tigs smash the Lions at their home ground for their second loss at the Gabba, Grimes on fire, Stackaman may be back and we are starting to play hard to defend against football in the finals, We don't leave the G and only need to win two more matches for the year. It's a bloody great time to be a Tiger. Eat 'Em Alive!!!!

Not sure if it has been posted but since we were 7-6 are record is 12-0 with a percentage of 165.2%

In that time we played every side between 2-6 ( including Brisbane twice) .

That’s dominance
