I’m even going to try, too hard.

You have left a few decent players out. Broderick, Naish, Daffy, Johnson, Poole, Newman, Gale, Ottens, Cameron. Not saying they should be but there is some quality in the 3rds.

Francis Bourke and David Cloke were also in the 80 premiership team
I only saw Bourke at the end of his career. I say I remember 1980 but I can't remember seeing Monteath and he was the captain and kicked 50 goals. So I can't pick them. I have Ottens and Cloke in the twos, could easily have had them in the ones.

Not a huge fan of Newman, Daffy or Johnson.

Thirds:
B: A.Kellaway Turner Baker
HB: Cameron Poole Short
C: Pickett Broderick Maxfield
HF: Daffy B.Gale Mitchell
F: Naish Balta Caddy
R: Maric Johnson Free
I: Grigg Newman Jackson Graham

King, Rogers, B.Ellis, M.Gale, Landy stiff.

My memory goes back to 1980. Quick, first-thought best 22/44 in my time:

B: Grimes Rance Vlastuin
HB: D.Rioli Jess Houli
C: Deledio Martin Wood
HF: Bartlett Richardson Brown
F: Riewoldt Lynch Weightman
R: Nankervis Cotchin M.Rioli
I: Bolton Prestia Edwards Roach

Reserves
B: Broad Astbury Gaspar
HB: Keane Hogg Bowden
C: Campbell Raines M.Pickering
HF: K.Lambert Cloke Rowlings
F: Wiley Taylor Ottens
R: Lee Coughlan Knights
I: Foley C.Lambert D.Kellaway Merenda
From the 90s to now (rather than best 18 I've tried to stay true to their played position as best possible):

B: Grimes Rance (vc) Vlastuin
HB: Newman Astbury Houli
C: Deledio Martin Bowden
HF: Richardson Riewoldt (vc) K.Lambert
F: Edwards Lynch N.Brown
FOLL: Nankervis, Cotchin (c), Prestia
INTER: Campbell, Knights, Broderick, B.Gale
SUB: D.Rioli
EMERG: Bolton, Short, Ottens

B: Broad Gaspar D.Kellaway (vc)
HB: Cameron A.Kellaway Short
C: Grigg Coughlan Ellis
HF: Maxfield Caddy Bolton
F: Rogers Ottens Naish
FOLL: Maric (c), K.Johnson, Foley
INTER: Baker, M.Gale, Bond, Stafford
SUB: Merenda
EMERG: Turner, McIntosh, Tuck

Great stuff

The one who is getting underrated in this exercise is Tony Free imo. Terrific player.

We all have opinions of cours e

Who’s “King“ in your list of stiff players?

In these dark times of rebuilding I like to think of our 2017 to 2020 dynasty.

Top 4 all years, 3 flags

Finals record of 10 wins, 2 losses at a percentage of 148%. Quite remarkable as these games were against other top 4 teams.

Great effort, and hard to argue with. Only quibble, I'd switch Roach and Lynch. First 100-games Roachy is the best KF I've ever seen, bar none.

This has to be the biggest smash and grab in the history of the AFL/VFL. We were only good/very good for 4 years and came away with a loot of 3 cups. Other teams remain on top for a long time and struggle to get a flag or 2.

So true. And for us to not lose a single GF is unique as well.

Not really, we won a lot of games from 2013 to 2022, very good for 10 years, dominant for 4. Its pretty standard trajectory, but I agree that 3 flags is a superb return, beyond our wildest dreams in 2016.

Spot on. From memory we only missed Top 4 by % in 2013 and 2015

The low oppo scores stand out. We were better than good/very good. The Hawks won 3 in a row but had multiple narrow escapes on the way. We were dominant.

So lucky to have been able to attended all of those finals played at the G. So many highlights.

And as some other poster mentioned, great to have knocked over the Cats every time. Sweet sweet memories.

Brisbane, Hawthorn both lost one abutting their 3 peats, Geelong too in their more spread out success lost one they should have won, our loss was 2018, even though it was a prelim, the effect is the same.

your point still stands though.

A valid and not often made point.
And we were at our very best in the one year we didn't win it.

Between 2013-2022 we played finals 8 out of 10 years.
