Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

The game was NOT over until Prestia had taken his kick. Therefore Swans player interferes by kicking the ball away. That is all that had to be considered. Technically, 50 metres. Umpire was right. Goon on the mike was wrong!!!!

we are trail blazers.

first ever player penalised for a rushed behind: Luke McGuane
first player ever penalised for marking a ball in a game with a huge crowd when the touched off the boot call couldn;t be heard: Bachar Houli (and hasn't happened since)
first ever player penalised for appealing for a free kick that wasn't paid: Tom Lynch

The first ever 50 against a player for not getting back nine metres from the mark to the opposition on the goal line, against Dusty Happens a few times a game, every game, free or a mark at fullback, player on the mark forgets or pretends to forget to get back 9 metres, ump reminds him, he dawdles back 9 metres. Thats the way it goes and has always gone, until last night. Dusty actually moved quicker than most.

Not quite sure how to write this up, but big-time trailblazing;

First side to lose a game as a result of an in-game umpire conference?
First side to lose a game after one ump pays a fifty that was technically there but have it overruled by another based on 'common sense'?

Yep between the free, and after Dion had kicked it and the ball was deemed dead, the game was alive. 50 everyday.

It’s great how the AFL and media flip between “correct application of the rules” and “common sense” whenever it suits them.

Just looking at the AFL Rules - 18.2 e) clearly shows a 50 metre penalty to be awarded .
  • has not returned the football directly and on the full to the Player awarded the Mark or Free Kick; or

18. FIFTY METRE PENALTY

18.1 SPIRIT AND INTENTION

After a Mark or Free Kick has been awarded to a Player, a Fifty Metre Penalty will be awarded against the opposing Team that unduly delays or impedes the play, or behaves in an unsportsmanlike manner.

18.2 WHEN IMPOSED

Where a field Umpire has awarded a Mark or Free Kick to a Player, the field Umpire shall also award a Fifty Metre Penalty in favour of that Player if the field Umpire is of the opinion that any Player or Official from the opposing Team:
  • has encroached The Mark;
  • when in the immediate contest, unreasonably holds a Player after that Player has Marked the football or been awarded a Free Kick;
  • when not in the immediate contest, holds a Player after that Player has Marked the football or been awarded a Free Kick;
  • enters or does not clear the Protected Area, except when the Player is accompanying or following within two metres of their opponent;
  • has not returned the football directly and on the full to the Player awarded the Mark or Free Kick; or
  • engages in any other conduct for which a Free Kick would ordinarily be awarded.

Harry have a read of the comments about the incident.
80% are 'he shouldve hit him harder'
'Thanks bud' 'Got what he deserved'
'Every dog has his day" 'the slippery gets snipped'
The hate towards Cotchin is unbelievable.
I never realised that Cotchin was hated to that level.
Cotchins hit on Sheild will be his stamp on the game to many outside Richmond.
Yes a lot of cotchin haters.

Total dickheads.

so Buddy was going for the chest the first one and got him in the throat? And he was going for the throat the second one and got him in the jaw? Pretty uncoordinated from one of the most well coordinated athletes in history.

Buddy goes the knuckle when the game is hot and they are getting beaten. Becomes uncharacteristically clumsy. Has done for a good 6 seasons.
And Gaff was going for the chest and missed, breaking Brayshaws jaw and knocking out teeth.

Buddy is a *smile* sniper.

Just ignorant, jealous ferals.

Still amazes me when the Shiel incident comes up...his eyes were on the ball 100%, after contact Shiel was holding his shoulder and didn't touch his head, he played on and later that qtr got a high one from DTLD and then went off.

When he was free to play in the GF, I heard callers on the radio literally crying at the injustice of him being able to play.

Forget the crap umpiring.

We blew it pure and simple. Poor discipline, dropping intensity in 3rd qtr, no urgency to respond to Longmire’s positional moves at half time.

Yeah it should have been fifty. But we were quite frankly stupid enough to put ourselves in that situation in the first place.

Yep. Being 5 goals up was our protection against he umpiring and we blew it. What is it they say in boxing about leaving it in the judges hands?

yeah, common sense can never be used as justification for anything because it can't be measured. Our common sense is very different to Hockings.

This sums up why, its elastic, you can use it selectively anytime you want, and it gets compounded, not reduced, by these ham fisted rushed-in rules.

A player backing away from the mark gets 50 paid against? That is the opposite of common sense. It defies the logic and spirit of the game, the line of scrimmage that exists in every football code. The player on the mark is giving the player with the ball more ground, but a 50 against? Defies common sense.

Arms-out being 50 metres regardless of if it has zero aggression and is just confusion, which most are, or if its genuine aggression and dissent. This rule wasn't needed, created problems where there were none. Umps have always been able to pay a 50 or a free for dissent, arms-out or not. Why put the blanket arms-out rule in? Just pay a free or 50 if there is genuine dissent. Defies common sense.

The AFL routinely do the opposite of common sense, then they use common sense as a defence when it suits. Corrupt hillbillies.
The inconsistency from one week to the next is utterly crazy, it lends to the notion that the AFL has preferred outcomes.
Last week Dusty and Shai were both penalised 50 meters when it was absolutely clear that they never heard the whistle.
No one spoke of using common sense then, the rule was black and white and we got penalised. Less than 7 days later the rule isn’t black and white and the umpires are able to apply their own interpretation.

i dont reckon the umps were too bad- a few howlers as always- their 1st goal, the free against Rioli and the deliberate against Gibcus stand out. we could got a couple of holding the balls late near goals. but we also got a few.

If you watch the replay the players around the ball, including Prestia, clearly did not hear the whistle. Grimes did, but he was right next the umpire.

The issue shouldnt be that was 50, the issue is all the times they penalise someone who probably didnt hear the whistle.

Especially this year when they have been paying them for very small indiscretions.
P.s I'm not angry about the 50.
I'm angry we let them score 6 goals without a response.
We lost 10 goals to 4 after half time
