The disquiet at struggling AFL club Richmond is set to take a volatile new twist before Sunday's MCG match against Fremantle.

Club members will be asked outside the ground to sign a petition calling for an extraordinary general meeting, with 100 signatures needed.

If successful, those pushing for the meeting will call for a spill of the current board.

There is currently no alternative ticket to run against president Clinton Casey.

Michael Pahoff, a Tigers member, has described the petition on Channel 10 as: "a motion of no confidence in the current president Clinton Casey and the Richmond board, because of continued financial losses, instability and its general administration and marketing departments, and continued poor performance of its football departments".

Richmond's fan website has played a major role in the lead-up to Sunday's petition.

When asked about how much support there was for the petition, Pahoff replied: "We're going to find out on Sunday.

"The feedback we've had is it should take about five minutes to get the 100 signatures, but I'm by nature a conservative person."

Pahoff said this would unfold "much in the same way" as the actions of the Unofficial Selection Committee at Carlton two years ago.

That group of disaffected members played a key role in the downfall of then-president John Elliott.

Pahoff said the matter could not wait until the summer.

"This has all got to be settled well before the end of the season - there's a very important draft coming up and there might be a situation where we're looking for a coach," he said.

Richmond coach Danny Frawley is out of contract at the end of this season and his team has won only four out of 11 games.

Off-field, there is strong speculation the club will lose $2 million.

Casey was unavailable for comment.
