Coburg Tigers V Williamstown - Round 9

Coburg went into the match on Sunday as heavy underdogs. In terms of ladder positions Coburg was propping up the rest of the competition sitting last, while Williamstown had only suffered one defeat to be second.

Coach Spargo knew it would be a tough ask to challenge Willy at Willy so he decided to take risks. In the first quarter the Tigers played on at every chance, running the ball hard into the wind and kicking to an open forward line. This style paid dividends that saw the Tigers have the better of the Seagulls.

The Tiger’s backline, once again, was the catalyst for the attack. Captain Dean Talbot, Leigh Carlson and Kristian De Pasquale had the better of their opponents early and linked up to give Marty McGrath and Kelvin Moore opportunities up forward.

Although dominant on the ground, the Tigers couldn’t grab the lead from Seagulls being down 4 points at the quarter break.

In the second quarter the Tigers had the wind advantage but the Seagulls kicked away to a 17-point lead at half time. Both teams battled hard. The Tigers were still in the game.

This season Coburg has won half of the quarters they have played in. Spargo pointed out to the players at half time that blow out quarters were a problem and if the team played four quarters they would be a real chance. Unfortunately the third quarter was a total blow out. The Seagulls kicked 7.4 to the Tigers 2 goals. The Tigers high work rate dropped off and the Seagulls took their opportunities and blew the game open. Coburg’s runners had dropped off. Chris Hyde, Marc Dragicevic and Nick Gieschen were taken out of the game by their classy Williamstown opponents.

Paul Spargo was extremely disappointed with his team’s third quarter, but he urged his players to lift their work rate. The Tigers responded by winning the last quarter. Tiger’s midfielder Craig Biddiscombe had 10 possessions in the last quarter.

In the end the 43-point margin that didn’t reflect the intensity of the contest. The Tigers let a very winnable game slip. They were very competitive with exception to the third quarter. Williamstown are an extremely strong team and that’s all they needed to take the four points.

Best Players:
Hart, Holland, Steinfort, Carlson, Biddiscombe & Talbot.

How polite of this author. That's not how Spargo put it.

Ahh, the 'Richo' (the coach) days remembered (with the
number of words that start with 'F' and end in 'g' with a
a combination of the letters 'ucink' in between...)

Add 'embarrasment' to that word...
