The WA State 18s squad was finalized on the weekend following the squad’s camp at the Joondalup Police Academy.
Scott Gumbleton, who had been under an injury cloud, proved his fitness for Peel Thunder Colts against West Perth and will remain in the squad. Claremont player, Eric MacKenzie was delisted but as a seventeen year old, is eligible in 2006.
The leadership group was also announced with East Fremantle’s Andrew Swallow announced as Captain. Andrew was the captain of the victorious State 16s team in 2003, an AIS/AFL Academy member of the same year, and a member of the 2004 State 18s squad.
Andrew will be supported by East Fremantle team mate, Mitchell Clark and Claremont’s Alan Toovey.
Clark was a joint winner of the 2003 Kevin Sheehan Medal for the Division 1 Fairest & Best at the AFL National 16s, and an AIS/AFL Academy member of 2003. Clark missed selection in the state 18s last year due to injury.
Similar to Swallow & Clark, Toovey also played in the 2003 State 16s, AIS/AFL Academy member, and State 18s and All-Australian in 2004.
The team will be officially presented with their jumpers at the presentation evening at Subiaco Oval tonight.
