There is one spot left on the list for 2019
Although there is talk of recruiting Dimma's new boarder by March, we still have some options
i love the idea of getting a young fella, highly talented but needing guidance and support. But we could sign him to the VFL team and select a rookie who could play in 2019.
And then draft Stack next year

Young Talent - Sydney Stack
18 yo, 177cm, 72kg
made the U18 All australian side, is an attacking high tackling inside mid/forward. high talent, high potential
plays like sam petrovski seton

Midfielder - Mitch Grigg

Age 25 (26 in jan)
182cm, 82kg
Running mid, 2 x Magarey medals, 1 x BOG = 6 goals in SANFL grandfinal, best mid outside of the AFL.
2018 SANFL numbers: Averaged 28.6 disposals and booted 35 goal
Knock – runs a lot, but slowly
Plays like : Shaun Grigg

midfield - Marlion Pickett

26 yo
183cm 85kg
A half back turned attacking mid, Pickett has speed (sub 3sec 20m), agility and leap. Will run and gun. Long dashing runs and long bullet passes.
Adds flexibility to play either mid or quarterback role off the half back flank
"And he added a bump on West Perth captain Aaron Black that was notable for its controlled ferocity"
Plays like : Shane Edwards x Byron Pickett

Ruck - Tom Goodwin
26yo
201cm, 112kgs
Was captain of Coburg, just a big strong mature dinosaur. Son of Andy
Hopefully plays like Andy!

and i'm voting for Pickett. Reckon it would be ideal to have Pickett off a wing, half back. Great versatility.
Can replace Houli when he bows out, giving us 2 attacking flankers in Short and Pickett.

On average the last rookie would play very few games, and last less than 4 years. So i'm okay to give the spot to an old fella like Marlion.

Plus i would keep Stack in the VFL and ideally select him next year under the same scheme pre-2019 draft. It is very unlikely that he plays senior AFL in 2019, so its a development and fitness year. Live with Dimma and grow up and get ready for 2020 and beyond

A 201cm, 112kg version of Andy Goodwin is indeed a scary proposition. But I reckon this spot is worth spending on Stack.

What people need to think about is where will these players fit firstly in our VFL team as most likely thats where they will spend most of their time and then where they can play at AFL level.

This is a rookie selection and a 1 year deal - For me Stack makes the most sense as you get a free hit at a talented kid that was ranked top 30 but was over looked
I suppose thats the gambler in me

After Stack - I would be giving Mitch Grigg a go , He fills a need more than Pickett as far as im concerned and looking at our VFL team it would be nice to have a ready made beast mid with the departures of Miles & Lloyd and to some degree Ellis as well as being a break glass in emergency for the AFL team for a year or 2

Pickett would be in the queue behind Markov, Naish, B. Ellis, Menadue and Balta.
As for Stack, he will play in the VFL anyway until he gets up to AFL standard

You lost me with Pickett when you referred to a "quarterback" role

I think Gerard Healy was the first to use that term in regard to Aussie Rules back in the day.

Boils my p!ss too when i hear it.

The winner is............................... Syd.... a ... Knee.

Unless Sydney snatches it or doesnt impress enough, I'm wondering if we have a plan B somewhere for this spot.

Marlion Pickett for me but does he fit the character test? Has spent time in the lock-up so I can't see RFC going down that path (I'm all for second chances by the way).

No it's all good. He was sent away for punching the bejesus out of a Collingwoos supporter. Should have got a medal.
Passes the character test with flying colours.

No way would Pickett be at the end of the queue.
If Houli is out (injury, age) as will happen in 2019,2020 he might be replaced by Markov or Ellis.
One is still unproven, though has shown signs but doesnt have the attacking bona fides. Ellis is proven, but more limited and earmarked as a defensive mid.
Menadue doubtful, Naish not ready, Balta not his spot

It would be between Picket and Markov - one a kid still developing, the other a mature attacking option.

I'm surprised Turk. This spot should be on winning AFL. If we want Grigg to play in the VFL, then lets get him on that squad. Especially if he is too slow for AFL, then he is a list clogger of insurance. It all depends if he has the speed to make it.
On the other hand Pickett has the speed

Its fair to say that he wasnt mature and troubled as a young man, so not something to ignore.
And he didnt get drafted because of this.
But all the reports are that he has matured and is trusted and reliable (only going by newspapers so it isnt confirmed)

It is a similar situation to Sydney Stack, highly talented but not drafted.
One is ready and the other needs to develop. I think we can and should get both
