My roughies for the weekend

Flem r4 Carif
Eagle Farm r10 In His Stride

both each way.

Best Flem r7 Shadow Hero - reckon the Sydney form is stronger than Melbourne franked by Castelvecchio running 2nd in the Cox Plate.

Carif should have went very close but was wayward when it counted and couldnt reel in the winner. 2nd at nice each way odds helped the cause. In His Stride ran 5th at big odds, a little more urgency and may have got to run a place. Shadow Hero never looked likely, not sure if he handled the ground, had had enough or whatever but was nowhere near it.

Cup Day and like Prince of Arran at around the $17 mark. Is proven at the distance (important), ran 3rd in last years cup in soft ground so should handle track but note he is not a mudlark. Geelong Cup winner's have been running good races in the Melb Cup for ages now - just think at the price he is worth a $1 each way.

Danny O is very happy with Vow and Declare but barrier no help and ground a slight query - Mrs T44 is backing it.

Good punting all

I havnt even looked at The Cup but am going to start backing the longer priced Waller horse in races

He spent all week spruiking Arcadia Queen.

I liked Finche but if Waller says he's licking his feed bin clean and scorching the track and sparkling in the coat and ready to run a huge race ......

I'll back Youngstar.

Liked Raymond Tusk for a few weeks now (since the Ebor) and have big overs but reading now has no form on wet tracks.

Tough Cup and I haven't invested much time on it, now that it seems the Europeans have worked out which horses to bring and how to prepare them. Mustajeer couldn't match the winner's sprint at Caulfield but it was a sound trial for this at nice odds. Might look elsewhere if there's a bias toward leaders in the early races.

Mustajeer's my pick.

When's the last time a long shot won the Melbourne Cup? Well done Craig Williams.

Must be a Richmond feel with last Aussie horse Rekindling winning in 2017 and this year another Aussie horse in Vow & Declare.

Geez....3 out of 24.

Why do I keep thinking Craig Williams is a Richmond supporter..... anyone know if that's the case?

Wasn't the right horse but jeez when people ask why I don't like Damien Oliver, I point to rides like that. Three wide from gate 6 and was full tilt eight wide round the turn. racing.com says he covered 3424m compared with the winner''s 3265m.

Not sure what time they ran but it seemed to be a sprint home. In the old days you'd get a lightweight making the pace and a truly-run race; not so as they've been replaced by Europeans whose connections pay huge money to start.

Edit: 3:24.76 - similar time to Subzero on a wet day in 1992. Only Makybe Diva's second cup, Doriemus and Americain have been slower since Van Der Hum on the bog in 1976.

Time to consider pacemakers?

Definitely slow pace early. MoR, PoA and V&D all raced on pace. Enourmous run Il Paridiso. Not sure the protest should have been upheld - stewards effectively saying IP should/would have won.

Id like to see a 2 horse match race between a stallion and a mare in season.

Frankie Dettori on the mare, Connor McGregor on the stallion.

they just keep running until one of them gets whipped or bitten or hoofed off their mount.

no rules

I reckon the pay per view would be a huge take.

Frankie will have a lot of new fan club members though. Everyone who backed Vow and Declare owes Frankie.

Without his reckless psycho chimp riding, Ill Paradiso simply wins The Cup.

In the context, Possibly THE stiffest run I have ever seen.

Of course it should have been upheld JB. Il Paradiso should have clearly won the race. Happy to declare I backed him and am biased but I defy anyone to watch the replay and say he shouldn’t have won. He was finishing all over them and the interference stopped him dead in his tracks.

Dettori is a disgrace. He did the same in 2015. Hopefully he gets a substantial suspension again.
