I've been a few times to the flicks recently & the cinemas were just about empty. I don't know how they can continue to make money with the real estate required for these multiplexs.

For Sama is excellent. Total gut-punch about Syria so probably not for everyone but will win the Oscar doco if American Factory doesn't.

Marriage Story is great. Adam Driver knocks it out of the park.

Nefta Football Club is a clever short on Vimeo. I liked it.

Caught Ford vs Ferrari. Not bad at all. Better than I thought it would be.
Christian Bale is always good.

Saw Ford v Ferrari on Saturday night. Really enjoyed it. Interesting story and pretty well acted across the board.

Geez they made some beautiful cars in the 60s.

That dude is ******* crazy
He is, but also meticulous and as responsible in his consideration and preparation as anyone needlessly putting his life at risk can be. Along with the white-knuckle dread it's what makes the film so compelling.

Rambo: Last Blood - simple plot that sets the stage for the last half hour of gore. By far the most grisly of the franchise; definitely no classic, yet somehow satisfying by the end.

Rambo fans will enjoy it. I rate them in order 1, 5, 4, 2, 3.

6 Underground (Ryan Reynolds) on Netflix was a boring bloated mess.

Ad Astra - someone had a big special effects budget and wanted to spend it all, to the point where the sets dominate the movie. Characters were cold and difficult to engage with, but I didn’t think the actors were given much to work with. Took a long-winded path to say not much at all, and would probably work better without the futuristic space setting. I expect it to fade into obscurity down the track.

Watched

Ad Astra
Rambo: Last Blood
Danger Close
Angel Has Fallen
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw
Indian Horse
Doom: Annihilation
The Mule

... in the last few weeks. Better than any of them was a low-budget 90’s film, The Stars Fell On Henrietta, directed by Eastwood with a great performance by Robert Duvall.

I mentioned on the music thread I've been on a Linda Ronstadt bender. It's turned into a gorging. (And my god she was gorgeous.)

Purely coincidentally, she was honoured by the Kennedy Center last week, and now I've discovered a doco, released a few months ago, called Linda Ronstadt The Sound of My Voice. It's a great telling of her story. She has Parkinson's now and hasn't performed or recorded for a decade. Pretty special woman. The best voice. Better singer than Sinatra, better than Aretha (I'll fight ya), all wrapped in this sweet, super-smart, hyper-cute, ballsy little package. Her range, her ability to sing anything from country to rock to opera to Mariachi songs, her collaborations with Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, with Aaron Neville, and most especially with her 'sisters' Emmylou and Dolly Parton, plus plenty of others, are just the most beautiful harmonies you'll ever hear. And she's basically responsible for the Eagles, because Don Henley and Glenn Frey met when they joined her backing band.

^^ Agree on Linda Ronstadt's voice, very versatile. Dusty Springfield is the other great female singer I like.

The old man had a couple of Linda Ronstadt records that I never paid any attention to. Saw her do a live cover of Tom Petty's The Waiting (not a song or artist that had ever grabbed me) on TV, maybe 30 years ago, that got me interested enough to buy a couple of compilation albums.

Anyway, back to movies...

Saw it last night. Tarantino created a sensational version of 1969. Music was evocative of a simpler time and the ending was brilliant. (Stay till the end of the credits.)

Evocative recreation of the late 60’s is the film’s great strength and worth watching again just for that. Unfortunately the storyline isn’t as convincing and I was left a little disappointed, although the finish was rather poignant. Loved the previous three Tarantino’s but don’t rate this one as high.

The first one was amazing for a kid. The empire strikes back a classic. Downhill from there.

Yep. Loved the first but I was 10 years old. The second was good, by the third I was starting to feel the magic fade.

The rest is just refried beans from what I can tell.

Average year for movies but I still watched plenty. Yet to see 1917 (which I expect will surge into my top 10).

1. Parasite
2. American Factory (doco)
3. JoJo Rabbit
4. Marriage Story
5. For Sama (doco)
6. The Farewell
7. Joker
8. Uncut Gems
9. The Two Popes
10. Honeyland (doco)
11. Knives Out
12. Bombshell.
13. Little Women
14. Once Upon a Time in Tarantino World
15. Ford v Ferrari

57. The Irishman

LeeToRainestoRoach, break out of your comfort zone and watch American Factory on Netflix. You'll dig it.
