Coronavirus

With what is going on in America right now why the heck would you expose our country to the virus like this? Surely it should have been delayed.

NT has been particularly guarded about letting people in. Wonder if this was a federal overrule?

Given China is pissed off and making threatening trade moves maybe they thought it would be better not to cancel any military cooperation with the US. Might also be the US realising that they are looking pretty weak in the region right now.

ACA doing great work again haha.

Talking about jobseeker increases and why they need to keep it at the increased level. They show this one guy who says he's just shot $600 spending his on a new Nintendo device, then later in the show him saying he couldn't afford to live on the lower figure as he'd have to go back to 2 minute noodles. Hang on...........

I get the issue and don't feel strongly either way on whether it should be held the same or reduced, I probably don't know enough about it, but I found that very ironic that the same guy who can shell out $600 on a brand new games console is then lambasting reducing it as he'd be back on 2 minute noodles.

its probably a fairly average human reaction.
A short term windfall and a splurge (or it might also be called an investment in entertainment)

It would certainly help pass the day better than buying better noodles!

The Cedar meats cluster now at 88.

Makes you wonder how big it could get if restrictions were eased. If everyone of those 88 people weren't under the current restrictions and living a more normal life you can quickly imagine it getting out of control.

Apparently big clusters occuring in the US around meat and poultry processing plants in rural/provincial areas. As New York/New Jersey case/death rates decline they could have a big problem starting in these areas. Trump wrote an executive order authorising these businesses to open in contravention of state approaches.

Meatworks are higher risk than most work places. Work-stations on the line are very close together and can't be moved. They run 12 hour shifts as well.

"" There will be a whole range of protocols so we don’t have adults mingling, we don’t have parents mingling. There will be staggered drop-offs, there will be staggered breaks for play, for lunch," Mr Andrews said.

Teachers and staff will socially distance and there will be increased cleaning, with an extra $45 million in funding."

This has to be one of the most out of touch things I've read during this period.

Staggering lunchbreaks is essentially impossible without constructing a new timetable. By the way, constructing a timetable that caters for thousands of students and hundreds of teachers, all of whom have unique combinations of classes is a massive undertaking that usually takes the best part of a term to do. It is logistically impossible to do.

Also it is pretty hilarious to say we will be social distancing. Unless someone's come up with a way of accessing extra dimensions, we will not be social distancing.

Over the last few years, I've taught classes in storage rooms, had to teach science in the library (sometimes while sharing the space with another class), while others have taught classes in the canteen.

Only last year, we had to split a classroom in two to create enough room for a staff room, where 5 people sit in about 8 or 9 square metres.

My staff room is about the size of your average living room and has 6 teachers in it. The only way we're social distancing is if we sit on the roof. And no matter what we do, we will be crammed up close and personal with students.

I understand arguments for getting schools back open. But don't *smile* us about what's going to happen.

Looks like it's worse - the tests DON'T WORK and they weren't independently checked before bought. LNP refusing to confirm that these are Twiggy's tests, how much they paid or even where they got them.

"Almost two million government-approved antibody tests imported into Australia and sold to GPs, hospitals and aged care clinics are so inaccurate they should not be used to diagnose COVID-19.

Testing at the Doherty Institute this week has found the tests, designed to tell if a person has already been infected by and recovered from coronavirus, are about as accurate at picking up COVID-19 antibodies as flipping a coin.
The government has repeatedly refused to say how much it paid for the tests, or who they were purchased from."

Case count (6:30am)

4,408,318 cases
296,736 deaths (6.73%)
45,932 severe (1%)
2,419,558 mild (55%)
1,646,092 recovered (37%)

Lesotho becomes the final African country to record a case, leaving the recalcitrants North Korea and Turkmenistan and a handful of Pacific island countries as the remaining CV-free bastions.

Will take odds on Sweden being the best model when this ends.

They have a lot of ground to make up - 40% of Australia's population and 3500% more deaths including 147 overnight.

I can almost feel sorry for them as their policy is being dictated by not having the resources to fight it - Sweden has one of the poorest health systems in Europe despite high taxation. However they have bullshitted their citizens into submission over CV, and most of them don't have sufficient independence of thought to question it. Prof Tegnell is a celebrity over there!

Exhibit A against socialist groupthink.
