Heres the thing everyone should just try hard to do. Me included. As I make the same mistake!

Not click any articles from Fox Sports. Not one.
Not watch any of their shows. better yet, cancel your subsciption.
Not listen to sen. Especially Whately or Cornes. Dont listen to a podcast of theirs or dont listen live.
Forget buying or subscribing to the Herald Sun.

Eventually... the media wheel will turn. Times are tough for all in the media. Numbers matter. Maybe it'll make no difference. But it couldnt hurt.

Played dumb and too many players down on their best form,

It’s still possible, but won’t be easy ,

Can’t help but feel port and Brisbane are in a good place mentally, bit like us in 17 and I don’t like saying it , but it does look a bit like that from the outside looking in,

Us I’m not so sure tbh , how well we go, might come down to how much we really want it

Absolutely has been this all year. We are arrogant, think we are better than we really are.

2 flags when in reality should have been four.

But 2 is better than none so we can look back on a very successful time.

After a horrible sleepless night with the wind howling I’ve come to the thought that this is the game to lose.

Reminds me of the last round against the Dogs in 2018 where we just got over the line. Needed a wake up call then. We got ours last night. Hope the boys learn from it.

The opposition will scrap with us and umps will pay it against us 90% of the time. Don’t get me started on gifting Lions a PF for QLD saving the season BS...

Short quarters need smarter footy. We played dumb and undisciplined last night.
Wind was howling and pungent all game here too, though I think I caused it by what I fed the dogs.

All I can say is thank St Dusty for 2017 , makes loses like that bearable

What happened from the 19 minute mark of 2nd Q . Did we change up ? Couple of players went off?
We went from dominating to headless chocks

How is this even considered a proper Afl season when 3-4 teams have had a massive home ground advantage for 3/4 of the season. Lions haven't left home all season.
Jeez I hope we don't turn into a bunch of whingers crying "home ground advantage" like the Eagles fans do. We get a bloody good run most of the time

Yep, I agree, the TV rights won't be worth much if all the fans turn off.

Must stop the morons in the AFL shortening the game. To be honest I don't get how they can argue not enough goals but we should shorten the game. Idiocy.

DS

Don't think it's the nuff nuffs at the AFL wanting to shorten the games as much as the TV company executives.

If they could fit a game into 90 minutes it would make for easier TV scheduling.

TV money is brilliant for the game - it could also be its downfall in the long run due to no crowds attending and the current fans drifting away.

For guys like my 30yo son and me who watched most of the 9 games on all weekends in past seasons it has been very hard to watch this year let alone get involved because of the shortened game and defensive game plans.

I've had more enjoyment from the thoroughbred racing telecasts and the English Premier League (they didn't *smile* with the length of time in their game).

One small positive from a shorter game is it extends the careers of older footballers. They can play more years due to not needing the stamina they once had to have to play a full 100 minute game (20 minute quarters with time on).

Now which team is the oldest player aged team in the comp? Who runs the operations of the AFL?

I must stop these conspiracy theories - but it was great to see them get beaten on Thursday night.

The undisciplined acts kill you in these shorter quarters. It was very similar to the Port game where we gave up three goals in a couple of minutes and never really recovered. The Pickett one against Zorko was really poor. He should have just let him mouth off and not react.

Tommy back in for Chol will help. The lack of aerial contest killed us. A very disappointing effort. I hope this great team doesn't go quietly and has a real crack next week.

We haven't traded in much but we will need a ruck. If Nank goes down the cupboard is bare other than CCJ with Soldo out. We need a viable back up tall forward as well to at least compete if Lynch or Jack is out.

Cause or effect? How many balls got spilled into situations they can create chances from?

Not many. Any high balls forward were either marked by the opposition or Andrews punched to the boundary.

A simple swap of Tom for the paltry Mabs is all that's needed to keep the 3 smalls up front that is needed. Now is not thew time to throw out a formula that has worked for 4 years because of a pathetic aerial tall performance.
Their responsibility is more than crumbing off the key forwards Leysy. They have to play as high forwards at times, tackle and harass.
i am little weary of the Castagna chaos, his skills let him down too often

Our defence was ok. I wouldn't say really good. We didn't take an intercept mark all game apparently (they spoke about it on Fox after the game, might have been no intercept marks inside our D50) but thats a massive part of our gameplan and we didn't get that going, which stops our rebound and hence why you didn't see players like Houli streaming from our D50 with ball in hand much tonight.

A bit like the other end, we had 5 marks inside 50, when we average 10 thats a massive drop and means less set shots.

The first half felt like we had the game on our terms, but I think that was just between the arcs, inside the 2 50's we just couldn't get our game going well.

Brisbane played well, but we butchered the ball a fair amount.
I find it hard to believe we had no intercept marks inside D50. Astbury alone had 7 marks and I'd be very surprised if none were D50 intercept marks.

I personally think the main difference was we just couldn't convert our opportunities. We won inside 50s. I think Lynch would have made the difference. Frees up Reiwoldt, makes us less predictable. Sobering to read that Lynch himself was surprised to not being selected after feeling 100% in his track work. We may have made a tactical blunder.

In the end credit to Brisbane, they kept the ball moving, keeping us unsettled. Still more went their way than our way and I was impressed the way we kept fighting til the end. Eventually Brisbane were going to get one back, they are a good side now, you don't finish top 2 not being so. We need to regroup and focus on next week.

We were dominating in the midfield. Brisbane corrected that discrepancy and then it was game on. Our issue was not putting the game beyond doubt when we had all those forward 50 entry opportunities during that dominant period. It always comes back to bite you.

I agree, wholesale changes not needed. Lynch is super important. My concern is the ruck. We can't have Nanks playing 91% game time, particularly against 2 big strong opposition ruckmen. How do we address that?

What I saw last evening was a Richmond like intensity from the Lions and it paid off for them... Handballs, kicks and knock ons to advantage all paid off. We fell down in intensity, were rattled and there you have it... a PF berth for the Lions!

So Damien comes out and says Richmond wants to play our next game at Metricon. What does everyone reckon the chances are AFL decides to make it the Gabba?

Did we get too clever not picking lynch ?

It seemed from the outside he should have been ahead of Andrews in his recovery, and then Andrews plays lynch doesn’t ,

Did we get too carried away with the theory we are a system team, the next guy comes in and does the job etc ?

Lynch is on a million dollars a year and chol is on peanuts in comparison for a reason , always easy in hindsight , but maybe we blew it not selecting him

Even as bad as we played, Brisbane played about as good as they could, and with 4 minutes left we were 8 points down....it's not all doom and gloom

I always love your posts KiwiT. One of the reasons I actually lived on here for many months before finding the courage to post a little bit.
And I think I almost always agree with you!

I dont think we tried to be too clever, it really hasnt been our way to play mind games, etc in all these years of Damien coaching. He leaves the mind games and subterfuge to the Scott brothers. I think, as Lynch said in that whole session on radio - they created the headline - that yes he was surprised, but the truth is because he has never done a hammy, the medical staff prob wanted to be super conservative.

I dont think we are getting carried away with the 'system team'. At the end of the day, you have to make do with what resources you have. Damien and the coaches must be so disappointed deep down that CCJ did what he did. You dont think they would have loved to play him? Also, I personally wanted Caddy and Broad - and still do. But Caddy hasnt exactly been super fit this season, with dodgy hammies and then the knee jarring. When you are bringing in Dion, onely had one week for Astbury and are prob always now on hyper-alert for the Skipper's hammies, they prob just didnt want to risk it.

Sorry, just my thoughts.

I agree. Effectively it was those 2 players who ultimately dictated the result.
