Doctors ask Berejiklian to reconsider decision to go ahead with Sydney Test

The AMA has issued a statement describing the decision to hold the Test match in front of a crowd at the SCG is "at odds with the rest of NSW's appropriate response to the latest outbreak".

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian's announcement that masks will be mandatory in most indoor settings in COVID-affected areas of the State is the right action, but more tough decisions must be considered, AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid said.

Here is the statement in full:

"This is an important decision, and an acknowledgment that wearing face masks is one of our simplest weapons against the spread of coronavirus," Dr Khorshid said.

"The AMA has been calling for mandatory mask wearing in NSW since the latest outbreak was first reported late last year.

"Premier Berejiklian must now reconsider the decision to go ahead with the New Year's cricket Test in front of a crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground, given the propensity for mass gatherings to supercharge the spread of COVID-19.

"This is a potential transmission site, as people queue at the ticket gates, at food and beverage stalls and use shared toilet facilities - on top of taking public transport from all parts of Sydney to gather in one central location.

"The decision to hold the Test match with spectators is at odds with the rest of NSW's appropriate response to the latest outbreak.

"The NSW Government is sensibly encouraging people to limit non-essential gatherings and reduce their travel. In this context, the decision to allow this sporting event to go ahead with a large crowd suggests that this event is important enough to justify the risk to the health of NSW people and all Australians."

AMA Victoria President, Associate Professor Julian Rait, said the Victorian outbreak is particularly concerning, given that it has been genetically linked back to NSW.

"While an infected person was apparently able to spread the virus undetected in Victoria for 10 days, it is reassuring that all cases outside hotel quarantine have been linked back to a single source arising from the Black Rock Thai restaurant on 21 December," Associate Professor Rait said.

"Despite 18,000 tests in Victoria yesterday, no other chains of transmission have been detected, but anyone with the slightest symptoms should be tested, no matter how long the queue."

Dr Khorshid said Victoria is now potentially riskier than NSW.

"Victorians have borne the brunt of COVID-19 in Australia, and the prospect of returning to harsh lockdowns must be devastating," he said.

"All Australians must now realise that the fight against this pandemic will require ongoing vigilance, inconvenience and disruption if we are to maintain our incredible success at controlling the spread of the virus.

"Let's put health first, and watch the Third Test on TV."

The AMA is right. Who cares about their political leanings when there is a risk to the rest of Australia, it's their job to call it out and they have done so.

We need to get the lid back on this quickly and Gladys' weak "urgings" aren't cutting it.

Victoria's testing site delays are unacceptable, 22,000 tests with people turned away. Sydney peaked at 60,000 tests in a day recently and have over a 100 more testing sites open than Victoria.

At the start of their outbreak, they also had massive delays and people turned away. It takes a few days to build up the capacity.

In response they now say they can hold back to back testso_O.

Suspect that stealing the Test was never taken off the table in NSW. Might explain the backslapping at keeping the 3rd. Indians now reportedly getting cranky about the impositions and refusing to go to Brisbane unless restrictions are relaxed. They've also never won in Brisbane.

Unfortunately Covid doesn't take a holiday or wait for capacity, hopefully no-one that had the virus got turned away.

So yet another hotel quarantine breech in NSW leading to the latest outbreak at a BWS store in Berala...
Gold standard my ass.
Occurring via Patient Transfer drivers as well. You'd think they'd be gloved, masked and gowned to the ying yang.

Pre Christmas after a couple of Christmas Parties and feeling a bit crook I went for a drive through Covid test and it only took me 40 minutes, obviously post xmas holiday lethargy had set in and Covid sites reduced at a time of peak social gatherings, not ideal.

Victoria did have almost 2 months of zero cases just recently, so it not unreasonable to slow down testing rates and close some of the locations.

Yep. Notice the clear change in language (spin) again to obfuscate in calling it a 'health facility' now. Anything to avoid the term 'hotel quarantine'.
Fact is both this new outbreak & the Avalon one have now stemmed from separate Hotel Quarantine breeches & no reasons given why.

Can't believe Gladys is still slagging off other states. This latest outbreak is 100% down to her and her reluctance to act.

Yep and she clearly didn't learn from the VIC outbreak. We started with this half arsed measures, specific suburb shutdowns, no masks, etc and look how it spread. Funny how she is repeating the same trend in NSW. Maybe if they'd done what they should have done, a full lockdown could have resolved this in a couple of weeks, but oh no, they needed to put the Sydney test on
