Not sure you appreciate how close the AFL season was to being cancelled and how this jeopardised the entire competition. The Queensland Govt were absolutely filthy and did not want the optics that AFL players had preferential treatment over their constituents. And Brooke was in the RFC hub and therefore our responsibility.

Secondly, Stack was not fined by the club. The club was justifiably outraged at the severity of the AFL fine and the stupidity of the 2 individuals involved and sought to make both players contribute. This was denied by the AFL players association and so the club had to cut back casual employees hours to make up the $100k from their soft cap. People at the club lost work and wages.
In context, think your position may need to be reconsidered.

The Queensland govt (understandably) wanted action taken to underline its disapproval of what had occurred. That was achieved by the decision to remove our two players from the hub. The speed with which that was done was also understandable. The need to be seen to be taking swift action was served, and the media had its headline.

The decision to immediately impose a further 10 week suspension, coupled with a financial ‘contribution’, was something else again and nothing to do with the Queensland govt.
And crucially both ‘happened’ at the same time with no legal advice and no representation for our players, and with no formal hearing.
These were not seasoned veterans, but two young men making their way with no previous tribunal appearances.
They had also both moved to Melbourne from interstate and like their team mates, were moved to the hub and I am largely guessing, without family, wives or girlfriends, living with them in isolation in the Hub.

Brooke’s situation was of course quite different, not contracted obviously and with nothing parallel to going out for a beer, that might itself, have provided some further caution to CJ and Stacky.
And the idea that our players could be made more likely to be guilty of a second offence, which also entailed a possible greater penalty for the club, because of Brooke’s earlier decision to take a break for a hair styling visit sounds totally weird even now.
(The ladies of Qld don’t react well to limits being placed on such visits, and of course none ever were).

The real issue though was the decision to also impose a penalty of suspension for such a period of time on our two players.
The financial consequences of such a lengthy suspension, for rookies who had come from interstate and had, had to find and pay for new accomodation, were always going to be enormous.
Again they were not represented and unfortunately it seems that every one was still very angry.

Also the financial ‘contribution’, was carried out in anger and IMO was just plain unfair.
The AFL didn’t say it set the club penalty believing it would be passed on. But rather that it was a club penalty intended to emphasise the clubs responsibilities.
(Everyone concerned must have been absolutely livid as others who were no doubt close to and important to the team, were to lose income and possibly their jobs as well).

In such circumstances and although the immediate anger was understandable that same anger should have led to a delay, with others later taking a fully fresh look and listening to and hearing, from both sides.

It did not and as a result our two players suffered most, with Stacky’s ‘deportation’, to WA in particular, leading ultimately to a term of imprisonment.

Like all here I love the club and take great joy from our recent successes. All of this has been due to the unfailing efforts of our players, coaches, administrators and employees
That said I think that in partnership with the AFL, we messed this up, with Stacky caused as a consequence, to suffer the most.

I appreciate you have a different point of view, but your arguments are based on facts that are plainly incorrect.
Players were not financially inconvenienced as they simply would have gone back to Melbourne and resumed their previous living conditions whilst earning all player payment entitlements less senior match payments that they may have earnt. Or they go home and live with relatives. Stack went to S.A as far as I remember.
Surely you must agree that the club had to act swiftly and dispense some hard love as their stupidity directly cost the club $100k and some very bad press. We’re lucky we are successful and didn’t lose sponsorships.
Secondly, Stack wasn’t deported in any shape or form. He traveled to W.A for a bereavement. Not sure how you came to that conclusion?
Stack’s imprisonment was a joke but Richmond had no part to play in it and have acted responsibly and decisively from the get go to appease a whole range of invested and interested parties

He is so far behind the others now in regards to fitness that I'm not sure we see him play this year anyway. Wouldn't be surprised if he is delisted year end. He needs a significant turnaround to save career I reckon.
That is the most likely outcome.

However I think it won't be measured by his on field performances this year. We know he can play. But how he comes back, applies himself at training and whether he has matured.

I can't wait to see him back in tiger colours training at punt rd with the rest of the champs. What an amazing reception he'll get from his team mates. This is a really good story! What an opportunity! Expect he'll fully apply himself.

Stacky’s imprisonment was no joke for him.
(I don’t for a moment think that you think it was either).

Reference to ‘deportation’ was intended as a reference to his later treatment in WA and the speedy imposition on young and unrepresented players of a 10 weeks suspension was totally excessive.

What's the punishment for the 26 year old in Queensland that was meant to be in quarantine, but held a party.
What would McGowan say??

If he had actually had held a party then he'd have thje book thrown at him. Given he didn't actually throw a party and the 25 people were in fact 5 housemates then I'd guess McGowan would say nothing.

You needn't worry, TdK, haven't you noticed I virtually ignore you anyway? But you keep me chuckling every time. Like buying into this even though no relevance to you whatsoever, with another silly comment, just because my ID came up.

Virtually ignore me ........................ Really

Just do it as that may stop you from sniping behind my back without tagging me

From interview with Cotchin published in the HS (paywalled):

Cotchin says Sydney Stack has been given the firm message he is running out of chances to transform his life and football career as he prepares to return to Punt Rd.

Richmond is thrilled that Stack will on Sunday fly into Melbourne to prepare for his return to football after being fined $6000 for a Perth COVID breach.

The club will give him all the welfare and counselling support it can after a harrowing three-week period in jail and the loss of close family members last year.

But the Tigers are also prepared to dole out some tough love, having told Stack he must respond with the kind of professionalism that has come in fits and starts in his time at Richmond.

Cotchin has spoken with Stack about his return to the club as he prepares to move in with a host family and improve a fitness base he said was only at 25 per cent of AFL level.

He said Richmond had pledged to stand by Stack and would fulfil that promise.

“That’s been our goal and focus since everything eventuated,” he told the Herald Sun.

“We know Stacky through his journey of living and getting to an AFL club has made some mistakes along the way but our goal for anyone who walks into our footy club is to walk out of the footy club a better person.

“We want to continue to give himself that opportunity to grow and find out about who the real Sydney Stack is and hopefully this last little challenge for him, which has been pretty significant, it’s not a wake-up call but it’s a reminder football can come and go pretty quickly and it’s not just you it’s impacting, it’s impacting a lot of people.

“But we are also willing to help him, and hopefully give him the best opportunity to be the absolute best version of himself.”

Asked if Stack was aware he had to show the professionalism to repay Richmond’s faith, Cotchin said: “Absolutely, and I think he’s got that message very loud and clear.”

Ooh! In bigger font even. Gee that's impressive.

I stand by my posts in general but shouldn't have bitten. But maybe if you're going to drag politics into a footy thread, have more than hot air to back it up.
Leon actually posts some good stuff but he ruins it with aggression and abuse.
That's actually a myth. I can be assertive in my views although generally not. Abusive, no. Self-defence if you really look at it fully and closely.

Besides, you sound like the school chaplain, AA.

Lets be honest he's a long shot at this point. He's going to have to bust his backside & be very disciplined to get back to snr footy. Even then it won't be easy.

dunno about that.

he just needs to put in the hard work on the track - He showed it in 2019 after a big pre-season, and also last year before the Covid lock down occurred. He was actually in good shape in rd1 - looked fit and sharp. It's all mental for Stackman, if he's committed then it will happen for him. Hoping it all comes together for him now that he's back at punt rd.

I'm 100% behind him. Just saying it's going to be a very hard road ahead to break back into this senior side after being on the outer for so long.

I hope Tiger TV has a camera rolling when he walks into Punt Rd.
Will be like Marly getting mobbed on GF day after the goal.
The Love.
The Culture.
The Boys getting around him.

Then 2moro Dimma/Benny/Peggy sitting him down and read the riot act.
Tough Love.
Wipe slate clean.
Reboot! Redemption.

See you on the track, Sydney.
Time to start spewing up for the Yellow and Black!

Leon, we used to go at it hammer and tong until I realised you probably don't mean to come off sounding the way you do. But you do come off that way sometimes. Anyway, just an observation, you can take it or leave it.
