GAME DAY - TIGES V SWANS

That was a terrible performance. Outnumbered at the ball, the ball comes off the pack to Sydney players and ours are nowhere in sight. They didn't work hard enough etc etc etc.

Yes, it is only round 3, but there are a few things we need to seriously look at.

Both Carlton and Sydney have managed to get the ball into their forward 50 and behind our defence too easily. There are clearly issues with teams who play fast being able to break our defensive zone. I think some adjustments are needed. I understand the need to zone as playing man on man just means the forwards can run off on a lead. But there is definitely an issue there which needs to be looked at as the more open game has changed things. Whether the game slows down a bit over the course of the year, and whether some strategies are sorted to combat the way that the team with the player on the mark is effectively on player down, remains to be seen. But the system needs some re-consideration.

We also need to do something about centre clearances. Whenever we lose, we lose it in the centre. Must find ways to turn that around during games.

We generally have more inside 50 entries than our opposition, today we were well beaten on that stat. This is a serious problem we need to address.

There were a fair number of passengers today but they weren't just off today, they have been off for 3 weeks. Caddy looks too slow for the current game, unless he is a third target up forward. Just not fast enough for defence or wing. Rioli is simply not doing enough. I also can't understand why they picked Eggs, saw him not go in hard enough for a spoil early in the game and that has been his weakness, can't see any reason to pick him again.

The umpires were, well, the same as usual. You can get your head ripped off and not get a free in a Richmond jumper, you can not be in possession and still be holding the ball as a Richmond player, you can swing an opposition player 720 degrees and it is play on. Their inconsistency is simply appalling and clearly not good enough for a professional sport.

The lack of contested possessions is killing Australian Football. It is looking more like basketball every game.

Good this happens in Round 3 as we have a bit of learning and tweaking to do.

I got laughed at for saying we would struggle this year after the preseason games I saw. Our zone set-up relies on manic pressure on the kicker. When the pressure is off we get picked apart. Hardwick has no plan B. Blind Freddy could see we needed to go man on man in the 2nd. One of Hardwick worst coaching performances ever

Thought we were shocking. Basic skill errors, defensively poor and lack of effort.

Lots to work on.

It was only the 2nd quarter really that they smashed us. Fairly even across the other three.

I went back and checked the score worm and you’re right - this wasn’t nearly the sustained loss of control I originally thought.

The second half was even. At worst, it was 1.5 quarters if you are willing to say their behinds were unexpected, but I’d say at least 3 of their goals from free kicks and 50’s wouldn’t be expected every week either.

This game was indeed similar to our previous losses - one bad quarter and 3 pretty even ones.

I dont think that's true.

just off the top of my head, in '17,

crows and saints demolished us.

unless crows piled on 15 goals in a quarter, I think it was a comprehensive, 4 quarter shellacking

in '19, we got schooled by 50 on several occasions.

it happens.

I forget the first Crows game TBH. I know the Saints loss in 2017 was just a half quarter avalanche of goals, our scores were about level for the rest of the game. Same pattern as the USA game.

But it turns out today’s game did follow the same exact score worm as those losses: 2nd quarter pile-on and pretty even scores for the rest of the game.

In other words, we’ve seen this before.

Hardwick in his presser described today’s blood bath as a ‘gift’, stating that there were things that would be taken from today and used to improve the team going forward. And that the improvements may not be immediate, but would come.

I liked his confidence regarding what had happened today. He didn’t seem shocked.

As expected. Let the ducks enjoy their final because today will be forgotten in 5 months time.

Dimma was onto the uncontested trend from the first preseason game, so they’re aware and onto it.

They’ve fully earned our faith to adapt.

We haven’t seen other teams avoid our pressure like this before, so I think it’s fair to say they could take a bit more time to get it right this year.

But everyone else is going for all-out attack... so if they can figure it out, then Richmond will be the only defensively solid team come finals - and you know what that means!

Yep. Our system does not work with these rule changes that have created an uncontested game. Dimma will be a master coach if he can change our surge footy attack and inpenetrable zone defence to counter precision kicking. Hocking has done his job at last - he has finally stuffed us - with rule change #27...

But it’s only 1 game and over our premiership years we have turned in some shockers in the first half of the year.

If a team does that to us when we are playing well I may become a bit worried - but with our lack of run and intensity today, we would have lost under any rules I reckon.

Can’t wait to hear David King to analyse this game.
Last week he said our strength was forcing the opposition to chip it around and we kill them with our pressure.
Swans chipped it around and killed us with their pressure
Swans weren't chipping around much. Often unmarked players right down the middle of the ground. Quick and decisive. It was scary how free and how often it hapoened.
I think people have short memories.

when we lose, we look dreadful.

its pretty much the richmond way.

swans kicked 8 goals in the 2nd quarter ........ and won by 7.5 goals
Yep, when the game plan doesn't work it exposes us very badly just because our players push forward en mass trusting us to win the ball. It's happened a number of times in the past particularly early in the season. Just have to put faith in our coaches to tweak the game plan. It's far from panic stations.

I had a good look at sydneys numbers pre-game and decided 2 things

1. They are playing richmond football and

2. They were in with a big chance (this can be verified on afl betting thread)

I think we will be playing a different brand in july, while a few challengers are perfecting the old richmond football.

But kudos to swans. They beat us on the G with our brand with a bunch of kids.

Ill be surprised if they dont play finals and ill be equally surprised if they are a genuine challenger.

Good to see the usual media narrative. The blueprint to beat Richmond etc etc.

These guys go earlier than a virgin in a knock house

Gary Lyon had it as a turning point in the history of modern football.

no *smile*. that's a quote.

its great. Richmond are complacent, arrogant and finished.

I love that narrative.

Heard it. I reckon it was about the same round last year he made the same call. Nicely measured analysis.

It works until the prior year grand finalists make up the extra training loads that the bottom teams had over pre season.

Gary Lyon the past couple of weeks has been a real irritant worthy of fly swatting
One feels that he has perhaps changed his Meds

Interesting that Hardwick said we’d improve, not necessarily next week, or the week after, but that we’d improve.

We’re playing the long game kids. Just make the finals and go from there.

You would think Gary would know better than to make make ridiculous calls like this....in round 3.
Someone should play him back his disgraceful and patronising interview with Benny Gale from all those years ago.
Three Premierships later the *smile* still hasn't learnt.
