Pathetic Crowd

Dear Gill the Dill, play us at the G and you will get a crowd...

P.S. you and your team are completely inept and are doing your best to destroy the game. Virtually every decision you make is wrong. I suggest trying a George Costanza and simply do the opposite to what you think..

Nothing to do with Marvel. Crowd would have been low even at the G. People can’t be bothered leaving the house anymore not even to go to work. That along with not being able to walk in the ground as you please, no parking and traffic makes it highly undesirable unless you’re a diehard like some of us

I thought that we joined the throw party in the last quarter. Why not if you can get away with it so blatantly?

As a 30-year member who rarely attends Docklands games, here is my simple take on it.

Unlike the MCG, where you have a variety of transport options, Docklands attendees (including me) rely heavily on the train service from Southern Cross station. Frustratingly, most services after the game go via the loop, making an already tortuous journey home an extra 15 minutes longer.

It doesn't bother me so much for day games but at night, especially with kids, it's a dealbreaker.

I'll double down on this: I completely agree with Hardwick that the MCG has soul and Docklands does not. I still remember walking along beautiful cobblestone streets to get to games at Princes Park. The walk through Yarra Park to the MCG from Jolimont station is wonderful, especially during Autumn. Standing on the Moorabool Street wing after grabbing a pie at the milk bar on Yarra Street.

There is no romance and nothing memorable about Docklands. It's an ugly, inaccessible tribute to corporate sport.

I reckon people are on the money about the spectacle.

The game has become hard to watch. The biggest culprit is incorrect disposal. Every contest is tackle, throw, tackle, throw, tackle, throw, tackle - whistle - 'Free kick high contact!'.

Tom Hawkins threw the ball to a Geelong player who goaled. It was a blatant double handed shovel of the ball. Not even picked up by the commentary team. Three umpires and noone in position to see it?

Don’t worry, I’m sure Corn hole and Parrot will point this out.

Dimma said post match that he hates going to Marvel and so do our fans.

He was certainly speaking for this fan. Marvel is a cesspool.

It’s a stadium that is not for the fans. It’s a nightmare to get in and out of.

What’s the real problem here ?
We have a least played 3-4 games a year for the last 20 years ( one being a home game due to contractual arrangements with the AFL .
People carrying on about going there is complete rubbish . Wind back the clock 5 years with the Maddy game against the Saints .50k there that night .
might add very ordinary crowd at GF rematch the previous week . The excuse of Friday Night game is lame as well . Got 89k at each final we played against the Cats in 2017 and 2019
Maybe the game as a spectacle may be the issue ? Give you all a tip . Take off your Richmond Cap and go and watch a neutral game live , it’s extremely interesting to note where the game is at . Got zero to do with venue etc
More about how the game is played and presented !!!!

I think you are largely right, but having the game at Chernobyl exacerbates the problem. They are changing the game beyond recognition and it isn't being appreciated by the fans who are voting with their feet. But every time I have been to Docklands I have noticed it has an amazing ability to suck any atmosphere out of the crowd. Not entirely sure why but it doesn't so much lack atmosphere as kill atmosphere.

Birdman19, for Ticketmaster I have taken a screen shot of my ticket, inserted the screenshot as an image in a word file and printed it. Ticketek tickets can be printed directly from the web site. Print the ticket, keep a back up as a screen shot on your phone - do not rely on the ticket company's app. The ticket companies just want your money, don't actually care if you can get in to the event.

Your been very nice.
I would describe it, as a really shtit place to get too and the fken parking is a nightmare.
They sold VFL park ,35% of the metropolitan population live near it.
And i can't stand how small the ground is

Funny how Hockings beloved Cats do NOT play any home games at Marvel this year. In fact they only play there once for the whole year.

I grew up around VFL Park and loved it back in the 80s.

Chernobyl is just a sh!thole and a pain in the arse to get to.
Tiger fans have traditionally been lukewarm about turning up for games there, but because Dimma actually mentioned it, the media and all the social media trolls are having meltdowns.

Reality is we played an interstate team with no supporter base at Chernobyl, at a time when the ticketing process is awkward and messy.
Result 19,000.
Crowds are down across the board. Even The Anzac Day clash got 78,000 which is below what they traditionally get.

Every time one of the MCG tenant teams plays a home game at the dump, people question why. The AFL trots out “ contractual obligations “. A couple of years ago you could understand it, the management of the dump wanted high profile teams to play there. BUT... the AFL now owns the bomb site and they still trot out the “ contractual obligations “ *smile*. What is the obligation? Do the AFL have an obligation to the AFL to screw around the MCG tenant clubs? I know the handbaggers get pissed off ( when it suits them) having to play home games at the MCG , but I understand why they do because their shithole of a ground has limited crowd capacity ( even less than marvel) and the AFL wants to maximise crowd numbers for big games.
Can anyone explain to me why we have to play home games at the dump?

Anyone think it's too many night games?

I don't have children But I would think getting home after 11 is an issue. ( and a lot of children's football is early Sunday)

And I could get away with a few Friday night games but I am always reluctant to leave my wife at home on a Satrurday night... Even though I will watch it at home, not like I am devoting my evening to her ....Weird.

Though all those reasons applied in 2019'and prior seasons too. But I rarely miss a day game and Saturday night is my least preferred slot. (Except 3.30 Sunday)

Don’t think it’s the “state of the game”, people have been bemoaning the quality of the game for literally 20 years.

I reckon it’s simply the after effects of the Covid year of 2020 where we watched more footy on tv than ever before and I dare say got used to it. And as someone else mentioned, Kayo at between $5-$20 a month means being able to watch every game is very affordable.
