Thing is we used 2 systems through the tournament. I didn't mind Kane playing in that formation BUT its predicated on keeping our wide forwards far enough up the pitch. Kane then drops deep and plays provider. He's done that several times and was also very good at it in the 1st 20 mins of the game, but as soon as the wing backs started dropping deep, it sucked our wide forwards deeper and then Kane was either completely isolated or had to also drop deep to try and get the ball which then meant Italy could squeeze us even more. I mean there were times we had our entire team in our defensive 3rd of the pitch in the 2nd half.

We needed that circuit breaker of adding the extra midfielder far earlier than we did as we were just inviting Italy closer and closer to goal.

I did say to my daughter once both centre halves had been booked, I'd like to see Sancho thrown through the middle and use his pace to run at them knowing that they'd potentially bring him down and get a 2nd yellow or alternatively be reluctant to challenge and his pace could then get him in behind but I think they wanted to keep Kane on in case it did go to pens so Southgate went the easy route there.

Yeah, Kane is a good provider, great at reading the fast break and getting the pass out to Son at Spurs. Italy just dominated the midfield for much of the game with those simple one-twos and triangles. Mancini pulled the strings.

Well, England have a geniunely good side now. They might go well at the WC next year.

Agree bodes well for the future and hoping Sancho comes on a bit more at Utd. Reckon he was poorly utilised during the euros as I think he was a bit out of sight playing in Germany. IMO he's a better player than Saka (who I also like). Not many (if any - maybe Henderson and Walker) will drop out of the squad before the World Cup so more time playing together will be great for England. Mount, Philips and Rice are an excellent midfield trio.

An extra year and a half into this squad / better tactics / experience and I think we will be up there again at the World Cup.

Probably the most technically talented bunch I've ever seen us have, far better technically than the "golden generation".

Can't wait. Brentford v Aresenal kick off the season this sat. What a thrill for their supporters. At the moment they're 3rd on the table. So it's 3rd v 1st... hahaha

As much as I despise how money has completely rooted the epl, very hypocritically, I love Villa's pick ups from the money gained from farewelling our lad Jack... now Man City's property. Expecting an exciting attacking game style from Villa.

Yeah but Dundee are horrendous (got promoted from the dregs) and they got done by the Jam Tarts (also promoted) the week before.

No doubt. Still a long way to go yet for Ange and Celtic

Villa now 2nd on the table:)
yeah, traditionally we're always well placed at this time of the year. It's only when the season gets under way and games are actually played do we tend to lose our grip on top 4 positioning. This is how it has been for decades....hahaha..
