I reckon we should be trading up if we can if that means we can secure what we believe to be an A grade mid. I don't think we can get them at 7...because that will actually will be pick 9.
A grade mids are typically in the top 3, sometimes the top 6-7. So I reckon snagging an A grade mid is highly unlikely at 9. Yes you can jag one at pick 28 if you get really lucky, but more likely its top 5i'sh pick. Just looking at the current grand finalists, Bont P4, Macrae P6, Petraca P2, Oliver P4 - the Tiges Dusty P3, Cotch P2...its fairly predictable. The top 5 in this years Brownlow were also all top 5 picks.
I presume the A grade mid we are after at P3 (that will be P5) is Finn Callaghan ...he looks like less smooth version of Pendles in his highlights, but does have that time and space dynamic that many good mids possess. I have seen him compared to Jared Polec though - which makes me throw up in my mouth a little.
Anyway when are we going to be a better chance? If we are lucky enough to have some sustained success, this will be our best draft hand for a long while. So we must make hay whilst the sun shines.
