WHY TIGERS PUSHED THROUGH TARRANT DEAL, CONFIRM BID FOR PICK 1

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
12 October 2021

Blair Hartley says Richmond and North Melbourne “kicked into gear” to get the Robbie Tarrant/Callum Coleman-Jones deal finalised swiftly last week.

The club’s football talent manager has outlined how the Tigers came to work out with the Kangaroos what would come in and go out along with both players.

Veteran defender Tarrant made his way to Punt Road along with a future second-round selection and a third-round pick this year, with Coleman-Jones, two third-round picks and a future fourth heading to Arden Street.

Hartley admits the compensation for Mabior Chol’s move to Gold Coast also impacted the decision.

“The free agency window closing on Friday kicked us into gear, both us and North Melbourne,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“The trade itself was made a little bit more difficult with North Melbourne wanting one of our uncontracted players in Callum and us attempting to take Robbie as a free agent.

“The Chol compensation pick coming in at the end of the second round, if we had have taken Robbie as a free agent that would have diluted the compensation pick for Chol.

“We were able to get together with North and come up with a trade that was mutually beneficial with the free agency deadline on Friday kicking us both into gear.”

Having lost promising forward-ruck pair Coleman-Jones and Chol, Hartley explained how the Tigers will cover for the departing duo.

“It’s certainly a challenge for us. We put four years into Callum and it’s disappointing to see him go,” he added.

“He was looking for more opportunities elsewhere and he was out of contract so we couldn’t really hold him.

“But we’ve got a guy called Samson Ryan who played his first game this year. We probably didn’t anticipate him playing for the first couple of years of his career, but he is someone we’re excited about.

“(Noah) Balta has shown he can play through the ruck and we’ve got a guy called Mate Colina who is a Category B rookie that we took last year and he did some pretty exciting things during some scrimmages last year.

“He’s exciting, he can really run, he can catch it. We look forward to welcoming him back next year when he returns from playing basketball in Hawaii.”

Hartley also touched briefly on the pitch for North Melbourne’s no.1 draft selection.

It was reported that the Tigers offered picks 7, 15, 26 and Coleman-Jones in exchange for the Roos’ no.1 draft pick which would lead to talented South Australian youngster Jason Horne-Francis.

“We never like to go into specifics, but we would have been silly not to ask the question,” he said further.

“It’s a little bit ‘no risk it, no biscuit’. They spent about four seconds thinking about that one, but we did ask the question.

“He’s going to be a fantastic player and they’ll be very lucky to have him if they select him at one.”

Tarrant aside, the Tigers have not been all that active in the trade period with Hartley explaining why that has been the case.

“With the CBA adjustment at the beginning of the year with clubs asked to defer their player payments into 2022, I feel like that’s impinged on player movement this year,” he said.

“It’s probably made things a little more quiet, particularly for those middle tier players who are looking for more opportunities elsewhere.

“I think there’ll be some things that pop up, but I’m not sure that there’ll be anything we don’t already know about.”

As for next month’s draft, Richmond finds itself in a strong positon with four selections inside the top 30 made possible by some pick trading last year.

Hartley admits that without junior football in Victoria, there has been a lot of vision of interstate players taken in.

“We made the decision to trade into this draft. At the end of last year we traded our first round to take Geelong’s first round to give us those two picks in the first round thinking we’d be able to watch the guys a little more this year,” Hartley added.

“We didn’t quite get the same result in Victoria, but we did get to see them play a little bit more at the start of this year. The boys in WA and SA have been playing all year so that gives us some confidence.

“We’ve got a great team led by Matty Clarke and Will Thursfield who have been ploughing through the vision all year and we’re confident it has put us in a decent position.”

So says you.
With all due respect.
He could also be the next Alex Rance.
My only worry with Gibcus is with the lack of good key forwards in the TAC it makes it harder to assess him. Not his fault but at least the on ballers are playing against quality. If our recruiters rate him as the best player at that pick then fair enough but I would feel more confident with a running player at our first selection

Wowsers, 7, 15, 26 & next year's early twenties pick. They must rate Horne-Francis or not rate this batch. Or they are simply clutching onto a known entity for fear of having egg on the face with so little football being played. I personally think that's an insane price to pay, in a midfielders draft no less. You can rebuild an entire engine room with those picks.

Lambert has paired up with RCD this off-season and has been working with him to improve his running and fitness.
This is brilliant news, hopefully the other young mids can tag along, this is a very important summer for them.

Horne is a definite gun player though, the others have question marks. It was the right call to bid that.
Big investment, four core players, maybe even get one A grader thrown in given pick 7 has a pretty good record. It's also the fact he's a bash and crash type, there's some risk his body won't hold up over ten years. I would much prefer to build a nucleus around a couple of taller types like Johnson & Goater and then a guy like Taylor in at 26. Midfield largely complete, tall enough to compete with the premier teams & heaps of flexibility, Houli's position can also be covered by Goater if need be. Viewed as a ten year investment plan, I like this arrangement much, much more than an 18 year old Dangerfield clone.

100% going to the Draft this year.
In the last couple of weeks Clarke, Hartley & Balmey have all said the same thing, hopefully it puts to bed the chat about Mitchell or JOM as it's starting to do my head in. Those guys are no guarentee to get us a Flag next yr anyway, just look at GeeLOL.....
A Draft hand like ours comes along once in a generation & it's simply too good to be throwing away by topping up with more older blokes & adding to our "will retire soon/need to be replaced" list which we alkready have enough of those guys. Nail this Draft & next yrs & it'll set us up for the next decade. The rebuild process has already been underway for some time if you really think about it, worst thing we could possibly do is deviate from that now. Taz is our 1st "trade in" since Prestia/Caddy/Nank & we've only added Lynch via FA since then, the rest has been all draftees. 3/5 flags in that time is sensational while rebuilding underneath our core.

Personally I'm not a fan of drafting KPD's in the top 10. A lot of the good ones are drafted later.

Midfield or a KPF for me.
Agree 100%. Not many decent KPF's were drafted outside the top 15, Plenty of KPD's can be found later. Balta was 25 & Grimes was even a PSD pick....

Judging by Hartley's response they did it just to have a crack at it. I agree it's well overs for 1 kid, at least we know now & can focus on the Draft picks we have which is my preferred option. Unless we planned on trading pick 1 on for better picks than we have now...

“It was one of those ones where you write it up on the board and hope that they’ll do that. It never came to fruition and North didn’t spend a lot of time on it. It’s one of things where you swing the bat and have a go."

Can smell a sliding doors moment, I'm also relieved North said no but I'm also very concerned Clarke has bought into the hype and was willing to forgo 4 core players for one top end talent. The difference between Horne-Francis and the guy about to be picked at 7 isn't worth 15, 26 & future second, not from my perspective.

I'm suggesting you draft for talent, trade/FA for need. If Gibcus is there at our pick and he's the best talent available, go for it. But you can usually find good key defenders a bit later than pick 9.
Exactly. I posted the draft position s of the AA key defenders for the last 10 years. Mostly late first and 2nd and 3rd rounders. Key forwards a different story. Don’t draft simply because of height deficiency, as you suggest you can trade for “need”/better players.

Only if you get them right.
our crew struggles to pick them when the kids have all played a full season leading up to the draft.
But god help us this year.
I saw Hartley and Clarke at Rebels buying darts. Thats not a good sign.
No wonder they offered the house to get pick 1, it just shows they aren't confident in choosing kids.
Then the question would be why stack up on picks in the first place.
why haven't we ever chosen a 'academy' kid? Have we got an academy?
This draft has 2004 the sequel written all over it.

I’m glad we made the offer and I’m glad they refused.

I also hope he now goes back to SA after two years.

You could also look at in another way. Sydney offered us two first round picks for pick 4 back when we drafted Martin. *smile* they could have offered us double that and you would not take it.

Sometimes you cant just put a price on these once in generation type players.

I dunno Smokey, I just don't get a Dusty vibe with Horne-Francis, I think he will be a very good player but one who will run a bit hot and cold and a player who will probably sustain a few injuries over the distance. Danger's first few years were mediocre, there were 5 years of greatness and now he's clearly on the decline in his early 30s. If Horne-Francis is more K-Mart Dusty then these deals will go down in folklore for all the wrong reasons.

Hartley doesn't confirm that's what they offered.
Article says "it was reported..." Hartley says "we don't like to go into specifics..."

I'm giving us the benefit of the doubt here and think we wouldn't offer so much..
