2021 Draft Thread

Didn't hold our nerve. We clearly wanted to re-sign Stack and Miller and hence could only have 5 picks by draft day. We paid too high a price for 27.

One of our worst trades ever. I rate it right up there with:

1. Fatty Farmer for Jay Schulz
2. Pick 19 for Jordan McMahon; and
3. Pick 8 for Craig Biddiscombe

That's your opinion, you're entitled to it but like I said you are squabbling over what? picks in the 40/50/60's compared to 2-second rounders plus Tarrant.
I agree on past trades including giving picks 23 and 31 for Yarran but we can talk about all the past dealings that we didn't get right but geez has it hurt us in the long run, the short answer is NO. We are only 1 of 4 clubs to achieve a dynasty (3 premierships) in the last 20 years.

We weren't going to use pick 40 anyway, and next years future 3rd sure I would've preferred not to give it but we may be talking about a pick 50+
I am not losing sleep over 3rd and 4th rounders.

When I look at our draft hand 7, 15, 26, 27, 28 I just go wow! So, let's wait and see who we pick up because it could well be 5 gems!

At the risk of exposing my absolute zero knowledge of drafting young footy talent I do think that a lot of the types of decisions we have made this year exemplify that they are made with a 2-3 year timeframe in mind. And as if that wasn’t the most bleedin’ obvious statement made on this thread so far – I’m still going to expand on what I think could be some of the background thinking – for my own benefit more than anything.

We’ve got a definite plan for this year’s drafting – you don’t let go of three picks for one and deliberately get three picks in the twenties (in a row!) without a really good idea that those moves are going to net you some real talent. I think that the club recruiters trust that the talent up to around the 30 mark will produce core players and couldn’t give a fig for the rest.

Getting three in a row is part luck but also strategic genius. At that stage in the draft you are drafting for need over talent (mostly) – it gives us the benefit of seeing what everyone has done leading up to that point and then pick the best of the rest according to our positional needs without having to cross our fingers that someone picking in between our picks messes things up for us.

To help facilitate this we delisted Nyuon and Cumberland – not because the club believe that they’re bad prospects but because it’s a business decision. It means we maximise our hand at this draft and leaves us with developed players from the rookie list to replace the raft of retirees we’ll be faced with in the 2-3 coming years.

It also puts 2-3 years development into this year’s draftees. Draft well and we’re a contending club for the next 10 years. There won’t be the cliff of talent / development fall-off that clubs like Geelong and Hawthorn are and will be going through.

And mostly - all that young talent will come cheap - so we'll have a decent swag of cash to chase some big fish. Did someone say King, Tarranto, Serong?

I know that other posters have all said as much in fewer words and dispersed over a number of threads and posts – but I just had to get it down that I think we are the absolute masters of list management. We've done this so right. Suck it up the rest of ya!

Now – all we gotta do is pick the eyes outta this draft!

Anyone thought that they may not even rate guys outside the top 30 or so players so have traded to get into this position

Don't understand how some can say we are stockpiling picks yet also criticise the club for swapping a couple of 2021 picks and a late 2022 pick for a lower pick.

Which is it?

Are we stockpiling too many picks or swapping too many away?

Can't be both.

I can't wait for draft night. Having 5 picks inside 30 is really exciting, and will be sure to produce our next generation of players to watch, develop and support.

Sure beats the one pick last year in the 40's to draft and unknown ruckman! That was an underwhelming draft evening

I wonder if Clinton Casey will offer up his mansion to showcase the haul of kids this year?

Looking at the 2017 Premiership team, the core players were Cotchin, Dusty, Jack R, Rance, Grimes, Vlastuin, Astbury, Prestia, Nankervis, Houli, Edwards and Lambert. By 2019, we had added Lynch, Short and Bolton to this core. By 2020, Rance was gone but had been adequately replaced by Balta.

Here’s the recruiting challenge:

Rance………..Balta
Cotchin……….?
Dusty……………? Most likely impossible to replace but we have to try. Still has a couple of years. Maybe look for a potential replacement every year.
Jack R………….?
Grimes………….?
Vlastuin………..? Still has five years.
Astbury…………? Tarrant for a couple of seasons if we are lucky. Miller….big question marks.
Prestia…………..? Possibly Graham but he is not there yet.
Nankervis………? Soldo? Still has some time left but injuries are mounting.
Need another ruckman to come on….. Ryan…. Looks promising but not even a replacement for Soldo yet.
Houli……………..Stack, Rioli, Mansell……we might have this one covered.
Edwards………..Dow? Similar type of player. Edwards took five years to build his body. Dow has time on his side
Lambert………..Gut runner. Graham is probably closer to a Lambert replacement than Prestia

Lynch………….We got nuthin. Next year’s problem though.
Bolton………….will be part of the new core
Short…………..will be part of the new core.

So, we are pretty desperate to replace Cotch and Jack. After that, Grimes, Prestia and Lynch are the most pressing problems. And we have a couple of years to find a big-bodied, goal-kicking midfielder, forward superstar.

I vote two mids, one to cover Cotch and one to cover Prestia, two key position players for Jack and Grimes and the nearest thing we can find to Dusty.

No pressure!

5 picks inside the top 30 for a side that won last year's premiership,l would think that we are definitely heading in the right direction.
When you think about it ,this year we had all those injuries plus fatigue ,and just plain *smile* football, and we still nearly made the 8 .

The way Hartley seems to work is he likes to replace list balance ,l can see maybe 2 kp or more from the draft or as rookies from the delisted player's ,and their are some decent depth player's available.

I like the way we are going rebuilding with youth ,while still contending .

Certainly is good news for us and put us in an extremely nice position for the draft.
if we keep all 5 drafts, when we get to 26 and through 28, I want Richmond to take the maximum time as possible, get the other teams to sweat.

Not sure about the key forward, better to wait for next year. But I'll have a stab.

Mids - think we need three because you are bound to get one bust, in the frame would be Johnson, Goater, Sonsie, Taylor, McDonald, Roberts (for now although I'm concerned about his athleticism) & Hobbs (however unlikely)

Mid Forwards - one of Rachele or Butler

Wingmen (only applicable for our 3rd) - Sinn & Wanganeen-Milera

Key Position - van Rooyen, Alleer, Bazzo

If we assume Rachele and Butler can make the transition to midfield then we need 2 from the first group, preferably a tall mid, and one mid/forward.

I'd like one outside player with kicking skill, not overly fussed which one & one key back. At the moment I favour Alleer, he's 2 seasons more advanced than the others and has a killer leap.

Good shout, let me look into this one (lovely specs)
Polson is ripped like an AFL veteran, amazing physique. Had a close look at the ball drop, not the greatest, then I went to look at the stats and his goal kicking conversion rate is below 50% which doesn't sit well for his forward credentials. As a backman, probably not as critical provided he doesn't try to pinpoint 50 metre passes. The speed is the thing I really like, that usually means he'll be able to make up ground on the lead. I think if you view him a key defender there's plenty to work with. Don't think his set shot kicking is quite up to standard for the forward line.

Hopefully we trade 27 and 28 for St Kilda's 1st rounder now.
Heh heh heh…I know you don’t like our deal with Cwood already but unfortunately, the deal with Cwood today also means that all of St Kikda’s picks move up a bunch of spots. Between that and what they were already moving up with when the Dogs use their picks on matching Darcy, it means that StKikda should have enough points for any Windhager match and maybe for Owens too. At worst they might have a slight deficit and be pushed back on their 2022 third round or fourth round pick.

They have no need to split 9 now it would appear.

Yes, kicking is a bit questionable.

Now that is a huge trade! The golden block of three picks makes planning super easy.
Means we get to target a block of kids, but it was damn expensive. Depending of course on ladder finish next year but somewhere around 1000 to 1200 points value out for 700 points value in.

I try not to engage with the points system, I think this is a red herring. I'm more concerned with finding three core players & I think we're well placed to do just that. I'd also back myself to get 3 core players next year, I think with the CCJ pick we can still do some damage.

Hobbs Is the one we desperately need to slide. The closest replacement to Cotchin

As for that Herald-Sun article, completely useless. Until draft combine has been run its pretty worthless.
What if we find Hobbs has a better than average 20m sprint. Or elite agility and move up a few spots. Or JHF tests horribly.
I don't think any clubs, except North, Dogs and Collingwood will have made a commitment to a player this far out.
