Watch them get rid of the stand rule as soon as we have transitioned our game plan to keepings off.
Its clear the rule changes were introduced to bend us over. Why isn't a rule change after Melbourne won the flag. Why was Melbournes style better viewing then our style?
Because they fken hate us!
The scoring didnt increase.
6-6-6 didn't work but the stand rule was our kryptonite.
Watch the Sydney game at the G.
Hocking was slapping himself for a week.

Looking at the players we drafted and their attributes of elite speed, kicking and competitiveness I have this sneaky feeling the Hobbs talk was a smokescreen. His kicking isn’t great and he is a little slow.
His kicking was average in the trial games, I don't think it's a feature, but then again he was coming back from injury. Really happy we chose Gibcus however, with the various 50/50 calls this one was the most important and we nailed it in my opinion.
the Brown call at 17 turned out to be inspired too.

no way was he still there at 28, and The Sonz was.

and Matt Johnson is a downhill skier who will never amount to anything
Johnson is very lucky to be an understudy to the great David Mundy, couldn't think of a better mentor so I think the chances of failure will be close to zero.

I think they did well out of this draft but I would have liked another key forward. If there weren’t any worth picking up then fair enough. They know more about it than I do. I suspect, however, that the Mid season draft will be used on a young key forward. It is an area of need.

Looking at our delistings vs draftees, we see the following:

Out Astbury, In Tarrant. Like for like, defers the decision to replace Astbury by about a season. We should be looking for a tall defender again next year.

Out Houli and Eggy, in Brown and Banks. good options to cover the losses and at Richmond, one can never have too many running half backs. No matter what the conventional wisdom says.

Out CCJ and Chol. No replacements recruited, hence my comment above. In reality, Soldo and Collina didn’t play last year so they are really the replacements. We needed at least one more though. I don’t think either is going to replace Jack in a year or two.

Out Naish, in Sonsie. Upgrade, surely. Cotchin replacement? Hopefully.

Out Garthwaite, in Gibcus. Upgrade.

We were never going to go all out midfielders this year because we already have Ross, RCD, Dow and Martyn who are not getting a game. They will sort through this group next year, along with Sonsie and a couple may find themselves traded or delisted.

Over the next couple of seasons, we will need to replace Jack, Cotch and Edwards. That means key forwards and mids are next year’s priorities. Three picks in the first two rounds is a good start. A quality free agent might be on the agenda too.

until its demonstrated otherwise, there were 5 booms in the draft,

and 50-odd busts.

oh, I forgot about Clarke. Out two dodgy tall forwards cum useless rucks, in a goal kicking small forward. Works for me, especially if it means we have an alternative to Aarts every week.

No, the difference between pick 9 & 15 this year has been an intriguing case study, it's one we'll have to revisit in 5 years because there's one player with a relatively complete skill set and one player with an elite feature that is a major weapon but the rest of his game is a work in progress. I wish Alleer well however, I hope he succeeds because it will open some more doors for players who are coming from such a long way back. The last time I can recall a similar situation was Tom Williams back in 2004, he ended up playing 85 games but didn't justify pick 6. Bit of a boom/bust this one but he's a nice player to watch & a fantastic subplot to a highly unpredictable draft. Well done on being a such a resolute player president, you've fathered some of the risky types this year and I've enjoyed the banter. Look forward to revisiting this thread in 5 years.
Love your work Bully, but let me note again (for our 5 year revisit) my view that Alleer presents as a Buddy like prospect.

Buddy's speed against Alleer's marking, leap and intercept ability, (plus the evidence suggesting he is a good learner with much improvement left) makes the early comparison reasonable.
The top mids may prove more valuable over the journey, but as I see it, GWS have made the best choice.

What's average for a midfielder.
If he is a 'see ball get ball' midfielder. His kicking shouldn't be a issue. He is winning the ball.
But if he is a Naish and is an outside player who is slow and struggles to hit targets.
Then that's a huge issue.
I have never had a issue with footballers that get there own ball.
Couglan, Maxfield, Knight's, Martin etc
That stat that concerned me most was the 40% contested possession ratio, I was expecting something closer to 60% to be honest.

I think Miller will surprise a few.
I know its a very small sample size but he looked really comfortable and relaxed against Hawthorn.
Im happy we kept him

I watched his Highlights
He looked good.
Good handballs. Read the opposition ruckman several times.
Hobbs isn't shiit

It’s been tough on these kids during the last two years. Their survival depends on stepping up to senior footy but they have hardly played for two years.

any you have your eye on BH? I like the sound of Dittmar for a rookie spot
Toss a coin between Dittmar & Browne, splitting these two tricky because on one hand you have a ball magnet who perhaps lacks a bit of wow factor but his work rate is peerless & then you have the elite fend off player who perhaps lacks the same level of production. Browne is a workaholic so maybe just gets the gong, nice height too and probably has a touch more versatility. Had Browne played on the ball at state level I suspect he'd be on a list by now, hopefully he gets his shot because he couldn't have done anything more this year.

Noted what looked to be an interesting conversation between Blair and Francis before the Clarke pick last night.

Hard to tell how stern it was with the masks on but clearly different views of who we should take at that pick or whether we trade the pick into next year.

Frank follows the next age group down so perhaps he wanted to trade it?

I actually think the enforced break will prove an advantage, particularly to a tall like Miller.
He looks fit and has put on some serious muscle. Early days but it would not surprise if he starts the season next to Tarrant.

Quote from Matt Clarke

"We addressed our needs with Gibcus and we don’t just see him as a back, we believe he and Noah Balta can be swingmen and Brown and Banks have genuine running power with aerial ability. We are really excited to fill some needs early and then get some good players in the 20s.”
