It’s not been often that Sydney haven’t had a huge identity playing up forward to attract fans to the club. Plugger, Hall, Budstrom.

Dusty next ?

Individually he can agree all he likes, but we should not pay a cent out of our salary cap to him in 2023 if he does leave.

If this turns out to be true I will absolutely filthy.
If he brought 2 first round picks it would be pragmatic to pay some of his wage to make sure we don’t go under the cap and also pave the way for a competitive future. I love dusty but am fine with that scenario if it happens. We will need to rebuild quickly and it will be a good way to get another haul of studs.

@The Big Richo would be able to explain these circumstances better than I as its his domain.

Think you've summarised it perfectly Craigo.

First soft tissues are very challenging because you don't have the cues from the patient. Anyone who has tweaked a muscle will tell you the first reaction is generally what was that before a period of confusion about if it is damage to the muscle or something else.

In this case you have a guy who has 'awareness' which might be pain, might be a feeling of tightness or just an unusual feeling. Very vague and not really indicative of anything.

So they do an MRI and in this instance find a signal, a very minor indication of a small bleed or other such damage to the muscle.

It's there but i is so minor it causes little problem and the athlete pretty quickly starts to second guess the injury and maybe push a bit harder than they should and the weakened spot gives way.

The other thing to consider is we don't know what caused the issue in the first place and it is entirely plausible the same factor remains at play. Maybe it's their footwear, maybe their core strength has diminished, maybe they are carrying some extra weight or have changed kicking action slightly or so on and so on. With that unresolved when they resume at intensity the same issue occurs but this time they damage it more significantly.

I'm not certain what the future holds for Dustin but one thing is certain, he has a legitimate hamstring issue and is working hard to overcome it.

Funny you mention the weight part. I’ve been saying for a while that Dusty has been carrying a few extra kgs this year. Has never really looked peak to me. This was confirmed when I had a few beers about 5 weeks ago with one of the health and performance staff at the club who told me that they wanted Dusty to trim off a bit.

My feeling has been he has always carried more than he should, but the cream of the super powerful, high speed, explosive athletes like Franklin and Ablett Snr, probably Leigh Matthews and certainly Dustin somehow find advantage in that.

What is inevitable though is as they age they must decrease weight or break down. Franklin learnt that lesson and has dropped significant weight after battling injuries. Settling on the 10kg dip after the kidney seemed ideal for Dustin but then the season blew up and he lost that ground. It's going to be very interesting to see if he can regain it or not, certainly won't be easy for him, he is going to blow right up when he retires as I have often said to him.

Nathan Buckley had to do the same thing. Reckoned if he hadn’t his career would have ended a few years earlier.

Disagree entirely. Clubs partially pay the salary of players they want out of the door (Treloar to the Bulldogs). They don't pay the salary of players they want to keep, which we do. Did Fremantle pay part of Cerra's salary once he decided he wanted to go to Carlton? We're not running a St Vinnies shop here.
Agree..to a point. Dusty’s age and salary commitments will dictate we either off load all his wage for minimal return or pay a portion and get a good trade. I think a 1st Rd pick and Ollie Florent would be a good result and we cover $200k

Burge has been really clear form the get go. (Read him. His name is Burge.) The injury is not progressing. [Healing.]

He said it weeks ago. Still not progressing. Last week. [Not healing.]

Burge is still talking about getting Martin right for the week after R23. But not with confidence.

Burge is very frank. I trust Burge. You won't find him on afl.*smile*

It has been long reported that Dusty is fanatical about preparing his body. Yoga and like.

Just wondering, given his father dying and then dealing with his head space issues, that he may not have been as fanatical in preparing his body this year. If so not surprising he is encountering these soft injuries

Burge broke him down again 10 days after his initial awareness .
