If they keep getting the best players then you and I will be forced to. And as I said, the players don’t care. They’ll play with pogo sticks on the moon, over 41 holes for Ita Buttrose if someone pays them too.
Sounds pretty facile to me. I actually know there are millions of people, whether just fans or amateurs or professional players, who really love the game. Few sports provide the huge mental and physical challenge. I mean, golf is played almost as much in your mind as by your body, and I realise you can say that about all sports to an extent, but many rely on quick reactions, reflexes and less on the mental side simply because in say AFL, cricket facing a fast bowler or soccer, you have about a second or less to react and execute your skills. Whereas golfers often take minutes to plan, prepare a shot, get it right in their head before trying to act it out, with a big margin for error.

I think you, like other golf posters on PRE, also probably love this game. Not sure you really answered my Q. By the sound of your comment though, not much enthusiasm.

It sounds like gimmicky BS. You only had to watch the Open at St.Andrews and witness Smith's brilliant performance, to be reminded of the greatness of the game (or The Masters nearly every year, for the battle between the contestants at the death - but not the hype or commentary etc.) and how it has great traditions that often brings out amazing performances under huge pressure. Smith's Open win my sporting zenith achievement of the year - only a 4th contemporary Tiger's flag could surpass.

So, is this really going to appeal to true gold lovers? As you say - " their whole format is *smile*. 54 holes....shotgun start....the dumb team and leaderboard thing. Its a bit gimmicky.

I'm already peed off at Cam Smith, because it looks like I won't be watching him play and take it to the dominating Yanks and best golfers in the world any more. I am much more interested in following events when the Aussies in the PGA/DP tournaments are in with a chance. Smith was highly capable of beating everyone and becoming a world No.1.

If he's gone as it looks, he won't be on Kayo coverage for me and seriously doubt I could be bothered with trying to find and pay more to watch these stupid LIV events.

But terrible news about the 2-shot penalty. Would be easy to foray into conspiracy theories in line with my prior post about US PGA certainly hating the chance of Smith winning. Interesting decision to go back and study the vision of this forensically, then get him incriminate himself through immediately saying he thought it was on the line. Touche! Ripped-off -2.

So do they go through every player's round such? Why his then if not? My major point on that would be - WTF! Just another idiotic rule to make some doofus, bureaucratic, athletiaclly-challenged official exercise control and authority over guys who can seriouly play the game, and make a good living from it, unlike them. What is the point whether it rolled on the line or not? What difference does it make? How many times is he supposed to stand there, dropping it, getting it to defy gravity?

So no replies re this surprised me. So, what did the golfers on here think - was the penalty on Smith justified? I'd loved to hear people's thoughts and reasoning.

Bumped into an old acquaintance out on course recently who visited and played there recently, telling me how good it was.

But by the look of these shots, as scenic as they are, looks like an awful lot of sand. Can hardly see much fairway.

Is it like playing in an endless giant bunker?
That’s the development of 7 Mile Beach. Due for completion in 2023.

I wonder whether this will stop Chamblee farting in church.

"The $750 million (A$1b) defamation lawsuit filed this week by LIV golfer Patrick Reed against television commentator Brandel Chamblee and Golf Channel shouldn’t come as much of a shock. Frankly, the only surprise is that it didn’t happen sooner.

As the lawsuit states, Reed and Chamblee have been at odds since at least January 2020, when a lawyer for the then-PGA Tour player sent a cease-and-desist letter to Chamblee demanding that he stop repeating an accusation that Reed had cheated at the 2019 Hero World Challenge, an unofficial event hosted by Tiger Woods in the Bahamas.

The controversy centred on Reed’s actions in an 11th-hole bunker during the tournament’s third round, when TV cameras caught him improving his line of play in the sand, a violation of golf rules.
Reed, who was leading the tournament at the time, was assessed a two-stroke penalty after his round, and his actions were denounced by golfers and commentators, the volume particularly loud because Reed had been accused of cheating in the past.

Appearing on Golf Channel, Chamblee said “to defend what Patrick Reed did is defending cheating. It’s defending breaking the rules,” which was apparently a bridge too far for Reed and his legal team."

That article is poor. Technically, it wasn’t actually a bunker. It was a sand waste area ie where you can ground your club. He didn’t improve his “line of play” either. He improved his lie in the waste bunker, not his line.

How many times have I said that on this thread ? The single biggest problem the Tour has, and the large reason they are in this predicament, is Jay Monahan. I called him out as a massive dud ages ago.

This spud knew about the LIV threat at least 3 years ago - and did nothing. Worse, from a general strategic point of view, he should have been taking the Tour globally and created a world tour well before that. But because of his US myopia he’s failed on that front as well.

And what’s his tactics now ? Just ban players, try and manipulate the OWGR, etc etc.

The Tour players need to remove Monahan from his position if they want the Tour to survive with any discernible health.

Nice summary. These positions require guys with vision. As you point out they have missed an opportunity and now are purely reactive.

He should be sacked.

Here's another example of his ineptitude - the FedEx Cup playoffs that are on right now.

Years ago the major sponsors eg FedEx bemoaned the fact that the Tour sort of petered out after the last major of the year in August (PGA Championship at the time) and that players checked out, fields were poor etc. So Monahan and the Tour decided to come up with a quasi finals sort of ending to the season by creating the FedEx Cup points system and having 30 players or whatever it is qualify for the FedEx Cup final at Eastlake in Atlanta each year.

Problem is and always has been, that nobody gives a rats about the whole season's qualification events - including those preceding the final - and fans arent concerned about who makes it or not. They just watch to see who wins each event. Then, you get to the final, and again, nobody gives a rats about the overall points winner, who gets gazillions in prize money, just the winner of the final event. The whole thing has zero cut through with any of the fans.

Can you name the last 6 FedEx Cup points winners ? TV ratings are just average as well apparently. And yet its insanely lucrative with FedEx and BMW etc tipping in a motza.

Simple solution: turn the Tour Championship at Sawgrass every year into the "FedEx Cup Tour Championship." Only the last 3 events preceding it (eg the BMW that is on right now) qualify you for say the top 60 or 70. That'll then get people interested in who makes it or not. Then they go to Sawgrass and play off for the FedEx Cup Tour Championship - winner takes ALL. No bull *smile* points winner. Just a FedEx Tour Championship winner taking out the highest prize money event in the world at Sawgrass.

Problem solved by Commissioner Redford P. Reds.

Good posting Redders & MDJ.

The MBA, MBL, NFL & NHL don't own their leagues. Surely the penny has to drop soon, and the US PGA realise that they don't own the game in the US.

Until now there hasn't been a great deal of damage done dollar wise to the US PGA, but when these playoffs are done and dusted, they are going to get a kicking.

Like you say Monahan has to go now.

At a small minimum, what that moron Monahan should have done is give those LIV players a temporary exemption to play in LIV. 12 months or whatever. FFS....they're only playing 8 events in their first year anyway.

That would have bought this lazy bum some time to finally get his Tour house in order whilst not undermining the quality of his own Tour's fields. Instead, he's done just that - severely reduced the quality of his product by perma banning all these players and created a bunch of legal issues as well.

Besides the players, there'd be a lot of long time sponsors of the Tour wondering what the hell is this guy doing ? He's undermining their investment as well.

Great to see Scotty doing well. Started the year ranked at 51 in world and on a decline. (from 21 the year before). But up to 41 now and will climb even higher if he can win here.

Dunno - but might pay to wait till there's one guaranteed to come back out of the water or scrub or out of a tree or wherever else some other bugger tosses it
Clearly inexperienced at the controls. Should be able to out run and dodge said buggers. He should have had Rory running all over the green. He had a couple of swats at it - that was funny.

Dumbass Rory could have used it to get a read on his own putt too.

Opportunity missed.
