Cumberland’s kicking for goal reminds me of Mathew Wolff’s golf swing.
Too many moving parts and ultimately not always repeatable under pressure although Wolff seems to be square at impact somehow
Haha I was thinking yesterday reminds of that mug on the corporate golf day that aims at 1000 cause they always shape and you know it they always stay left or hook uncontrollably , cumbo has to know that small forwards have limited opportunities, you gotta cash in or risk losing your spot , same goes for mrj ,,,do NOT miss from directly in front

This kid needs (and deserves) more hype.

Only entering his third season in the system and has come from not even on the draft radar to dominating VFL games and being able to compete well as a forward against AFL level defenders albeit in practice matches.

Again, he’s 22 and only entering his third season in the AFL system. There is a fair bit to get excited about here.

Just some context to Ryan today.

1. He was playing in the last quarter of a 30 degree practice match when no-one gave a stuff.

2. In terms of the reserves game, on the Show Me the Money documentary when discussing the recruiting of Brodie Grundy, Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb said their ruck stocks were Max Gawn and nothing else. His words, 'literally nothing'. They then added Josh Schache to the list because he had shown promise in the ruck at VFL level for the Bulldogs. If Ryan didn't dominate that game there's be something wrong.

Positive direction sure, but don't get carried away.

@The Big Richo i think your point 1 is a bit dismissive of the gains Samson appears to have made on his forward craft. his first two outings have shown aggression at the ball and splitting packs.

Watch the replay of the North game, could have kicked 4 and either marked or brought the ball to ground, not dominant but when the ball was in the vicinity did what you would want from a resting ruckman, (which he was not on the day i know).
Yesterday what 4 marks and what should have been a couple of goals in a qtr, (where the likes of May, Lever, Petty couldn't give a stuff  ).

On to point 2 where I agree with you:

There has been a bit of a catch-22 situation with Rhino, previous seasons he has played predominately forward in part by design and in part playing 2nd and 3rd fiddle to Soldo and even some hybrids in the VFL, (also because we had no other VFL key fwd), so he has not had the body of ruckwork to stand him in great stead for AFL?
I had heard he was going to be given the number 1 ruck duties at VFL level to ramp up his development but again, all pre-season, (due to Lynch's injury), he has had to play the Lynch role for structure and very little ruckwork at training and match sim.
May be a bonus in the long run as the forced circumstance may have just fast tracked his forward work?
Hard to know if Samson will be automatically be better in the ruck given he has put on a bit of size but I too would like to see him rucking himself to exhaustion in the VFL and dominating before throwing him to the wolves again so it wouldn't be round 1 for me.

I’m not 100% sold on Sampson yet but I like the aggression and body shape that he’s come out with in 2023. Appears to be gaining some confidence which is good.

What's indisputable is that Samon's 2nd game of AFL Seniors is going to be a lot better than his first.

I'd risk him as ruck/forward more than Soldo.

I think if either is playing and expected to be a forward then we are in trouble.
But would he? Miller in 2’s wasn’t he. You could have egg on face here

Good point, I'll rephrase to he should be behind Miller, otherwise it's a mistake.

I do. And I stand by it.

Your comment was around him playing before Soldo though, and that's fair. Soldo shouldn't play at all unless Nankervis is out and Ryan shouldn't play unless Lynch or Riewoldt are out.

TBR will walk backwards naked across the Nullarbor if Samson plays R1.

Sunburn hasn't healed from last time, but I'll book holidays for late September.

Are you calling for sackings?
HOw long are we going to wait?
Its been 3 years

I'm not knocking his overall development, just don't think he is quite there yet. 3 years for a beanpole is 6 months in midfielder years.

I don't mean to knock his development, I think he is going really well and improving fast.

What I mean is I think we need to be careful about getting too carried away with a scratchy against North and some nice signs in the last quarter of yesterday's game.

He's doing some nice things when everyone else is in second gear, it's a big jump to when they all hit 5th in a couple of weeks. If May and Lever were at AFL intensity they would eat that boy alive.

There's a case that he could play third banana but it appears we are already playing Martin in that spot based on his split of mid/forward time thus far (which is a mistake). If we go with Lynch, Riewoldt, Martin and Ryan in one forward line we will concede 12 goals on transition and poor old Rioli Jnr will expire halfway through the second quarter.

Not if he plays game 2 in an arctic snow blizzard quagmire again

The year Max Gawn 209 was Sampson Ryan 206 age,

He played 13 games @ 9 disposals, 1 CM and half a goal

I can imagine Sampson exceeding that in 2023

Why cant we play Lynch , Riewoldt , Miller , Ryan & Nankervis in the same team ?

Melbourne yesterday had Gawn , Grundy , Brown , McDonald as foward/Rucks and seemed to work well

Ryan & Miller being dual position and the extra spot on the bench i think allows 8 KPP to be played in the team

But only 1 of Soldo / Nank should be played as neither really has much 2nd position ability

We have always played a second ruck/forward. Miller was that player towards the back end of last year. So playing Ryan would be no different. Right now I see him a better option than Miller and Soldo.

Yes Martin playing predominantly forward throws a spanner in the works but once the season starts I can see that changing.

Spot on. I think the biggest issue we face is who is our number 1 ruck. I am starting to worry about the influence Nank has especially against the much taller and athletic ruck men.

Nank is 100% the number #1 Ruckman in my eyes as he offers alot more around the ground and im happy to lose the extra 2-3 taps that Soldo offers.

I personally believe Soldo will end up at another club in 2024/25
probably Carlton lol

Two key differences to me. First is running capacity I think. If those boys all did a 2km time trial together Melbourne would certainly comfortably trifecta, if not quaddie.

Second is positional duality. The four Melbourne guys can all ruck and catch it up forward. Nankervis and Soldo aren't good enough as forwards, Riewoldt is too small to ruck, Lynch can't ruck because of his knee and Ryan isn't physically ready to ruck.

Gibcus and possibly Tarrant not being fit for round one changes things, Miller will have to play down back and either Soldo or Ryan to play 2nd ruck/forward, my choice is Ryan.
Injuries create opportunities, playing round one is a good opportunity for Ryan, I'm gunna back him to pass the test.
