What sort of dog you got?

I have a 4 yr old white and red Staffy called Saffron. She is very switched on. Friendly to dog and person alike but is able determine if something is a real threat. Highly obedient, toilet trained, only chews on her own toys and hangs out with you if you are sad or ill. Awesome pet!!Screenshot_20220806-191056_Gallery.jpg

Great thread. This is Rory, 13 year old whippet. Gentlest dog on the planet. Had some health issues early days so owners couldn’t show him or breed with him. Best money I ever spent.
Had to say goodbye to our beautiful boy today. 15 wonderful years. RIP mate.

Meet Billy.

I asked the vet about his life expectancy. He said we needed to be realistic as he’s a senior citizen. He’s losing his hearing and his eyesight. He’s not walking a lot. But if you look after him, maybe 1-2 years.

Anyway, we think Billy is doing very well atm. He seems happy. We try not to leave him on his own for long periods of time. He can’t walk down the stairs anymore because of his eyes and he sleeps a hell of a lot. But we are hopeful he will be around for a while yet.

Bit of an update on my little Billy. He’s still going reasonably well. His eyesight is pretty much shot. We’ve had to block the stairs off coz he’s had a couple of falls and is a stubborn little bugger. He knocks into walls a bit. He won’t walk outside when the sun is out because the sunlight goes right through him (he thinks something is coming at great speed to hit him and he shivers).

He goes mainly by smell now. I have to carry him to the toilet more often than not (especially when its dark). Going to the footy is gonna be problematic this year because I don’t like leaving him on his own for too long (especially at night where he has a set routine). He gets really clingy when we've been out for 4-5 hours.

But he still seems happy. I reckon he was depressed about losing his eyesight, but I reckon he has come to terms with it now. My biggest issue now is trying to find him some mental stimulation. From time to time he does some weird stuff and I feel I need to do more to keep his mind active.

How do you keep an old, almost blind dog that doesn’t walk much mentally stimulated? I’m open to suggestions…

Have you tried a "Kong" food toy?

Yes. used to do it for all meals, then stopped when we changed his diet... Vet recommended we combine mince meat to his regular food as it will make him drink more.
We mainly use ours when we leave him at home alone, it keeps him busy.
